The following is part of his obituary: He entered active military service
at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri October 14, 1941 and was sent
to Fort Riley, Kansas on October 24, 1941. On January 2, 1942 he was sent
to Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas, where he received his training in the 7th
Calvary, 1st Division, which included some of the oldest regiments of the
United States Army. The hard-riding regulars, principally from Texas and
Colorado, have fought every foot of the way since they were sent to the
Southwest Pacific in June, 1943. Cpl. Hofstetter landed in Australia and
later served the New Guinea and Admiralty Islands campaigns. In February,
1944, he with a number of other men of the 7th Calvary, was commended for
the coolness, promptness and efficiency with which he carried on first
aid work and evacuation of wounded men. A letter to his parents from his
commanding officer, stated: I feel that I should write and give you some
of the details concerning Gilbert's unfortunate death. Of the morning of
October 21, Gilbert's unit was ordered to seize a strategic hill to the
south of an overlooking city of Tacloban. The hill was successfully
assaulted after extremely hazardous and aggressive action on the part of
the unit. During this action, your son was killed while attempting to
dislodge a sniper who was endangering the lives of the men on the hill.
His outstanding efforts contributed greatly to the success of the mission
which was of vital importance. His death was instant and he suffered no
pain or disfiguration. Gilbert was an excellent soldier at all times. He
was held in high esteem by all the officers and men of the organization.
His loss will be keenly felt by this organization, yet we realize it in
