When Fred was 81 years old, the Tipton Times printed the following in an
article about him: "Mr, Hickman is one Of the community's pioneer
citizens, being a veteran of the Civil War and one Of the few remaining
members of the G. A. R. He was a citizen here before Tipton's town site
was selected and before the virgin soil surrounded the present town was
converted into the fine farms that now adorn her trade territory.

Mr. Hickman was an eyewitness to the first train that reached Tipton over
the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and he gives many interesting incidents as
a result of that memorable day to those who witnessed the scene and their
maneuvers in various forms.

Parties from the countryside came on horseback, as a rule, crowding as
close as possible to the seat of operation. When the midget engine,
drawing the small coach "hove in sight" and slowly wended it's way to the
point where the depot now stands, and the whistle blew, the horses, with
their riders "turned about face", as if by magic, and ran at the rate Of
a mile a minute more or less, as far as "the road was cut out", and the
remaining crowd were spell-bound and "worked their way" to a more
secluded spot for relaxation and relief. The tram came, and those who saw
it, had survived. It was a great day, at what is now one of the best
country towns and agricultural districts in the state.

Mr. Hickman has lived to see the automobile and flying machine, and may
he live to take passage in the air with his baggage, accompanied by all
