At this point, we pick up the family line of John Hiatt (b. abt1674) who in about 1695 married Mary Smith , daughter of William Smithand Grace ?
John Hiatt and Mary Smith - daughter of William and Grace Smithproduced at least three children, John Jr. (b.abt 1720), George(b.abt1724), and William (b.abt1730). Among them, George Hiatt is ourguy.

No record is found of John Hiett in Quaker records in PA but Fall MMin Bucks County PA makes one brief reference to a "Mary Hyot" who was"received on certificate" the 7th of 6m 1706". Of John and Mary littleis known. He is called "yeoman" A yeoman is a free born common man ofthe most respectable class, a freeholder. He was probably a farmer, andpossibly a merchant. He may have also lived in Maryland. It appearsthat they had the following sons: John, George (1698-1793), and William.

This family belonged to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in England, possibly fleeing, as did many of the sect., to Holland of France to escape persecution the latter part of the 17th century, before coming to America.

JohnHiett was probably a farmer, and possibly a merchant.

"In Joseph Besse's "ACollection of the Sufferings of the people called Quaker", it mentions a John Hyott of Shipton-Mallett, England, who was taken prisoner in Somersetshire in 1686, at a time when the Quakers were most severely persecuted for their religious beliefs. No further record of this John Hyott has been found. It is possiblethat this John Hyott of Shipton-Mallett is identical with our John Hiett who appears in Pennsylvania around 1699, or is the following a possible lineage of Hyett's from England to America (from "The Visitation of the County of Gloucester1682 to 1683 by Fenwick, page 96.) It appears that our John Hiett probably came to America with William Penn on his second trip to America. Penn's second voyage to Pennsylvainia was in the fall of 1699, and our john Hiett seems to havearrived at about the same time, for it was early that following year that he purchased three hundred acres of land in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for three hundred fifty pounds "current silver money." This can be found in Deed Book 3, page 27, Doylestown, the county seat of Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
No record isfound of John Hiett in Quaker record of Pennsylvania but Fall MM in Bucks County Pennsylvania makes a brief reference to a "Mary Hyott" who was "received on certificate" the 7th of 6th month 1706." Of John and Mary little is known. He iscalled "yeoman." A Yeoman is a free born common man of the most respectable class, a freeholder. He was probably a farmer, and possibly a mercant. He may also have lived in Maryland. Parents: John Van HIETT and Mrs. Margaret HIETT.

1 John HIATT Jr. (ID:2) b. abt 1696 in Eng; d. between 26 Oct. 1764 and 4Dec. 1764 in Frederick Co., VA; bur. in Frederick Co., VA.
John HIATT, Jr. first appears on the records of Lancaster County,PA. on 25 April 1733 when he received warrant number 5 to 200 acres ofland situated on Beaver Creek. He apparently did not comply with theconditions of the warrant, for the land declared vacated and regranted in1744. George HIATT, brother of John Jr. also held land in LancasterCounty that he sold before moving to Frederick County, Maryland where hewas associated with Pipes Creek Meeting. The three HIATT brothers, JohnJr. George and William, eventually were living near Hopewell in FrederickCounty, VA. Even though John Jr. and George owned land in LancasterCounty in PA, it appears that their real base of operations was in theElk County area prior to the move southward.
About 1733 seventy families settled in what became FrederickCounty, VA. Here they founded Hopewell Meeting. Thirty-six patents havebeen found for thirty-four of these families. All patents dated 12 Nov.1735. John HIATT Jr. was granted 300 acres. He purchased 200 acres morein 1738. The HIATT's settled at the head of a branch of Opeckon Creeknear the present day village of Middleway, northeast of Winchester. Thislocation was in Orange County, VA. in 1734, Frederick County in 1738,Berkeley County in 1772, Jefferson County in 1801. Today Berkeley andJefferson Counties still exist but they are part of W. VA. The HIATT'sremained there about twenty years.
In 1757 the HIATT's moved to Rowan (now Guilford) County, NC,although John Jr. did not sell the land in Virginia. He bought 640 acreson the south fork of Deep River and built a mill. Some maps show HIATTCreek flowing into Deep River. Hiatt's Creek (Run) a tributary of NorthRiver, still bears his name. This land fell in Guilford County when itwas formed in 1772. John Jr. purchased land at North River Mills.
In 1760 John Jr. deeded this land to three sons by RachelWilson, Joseph, George and John and returned to Virginia. This time hesettled in Hampshire County on a plantation of 659 acres purchased fromhis son, George.
Shortly before his death, John HIATT Jr. returned to FrederickCounty, VA. John HIATT Jr. will was written and probated. An old pioneerstory in a paper stated, "Scouts brot news that there was a body ofIndians coming toward the fort on Capon and HIATT gathered his family andstarted in the night. He took quinsy and died that winter. John HIATTleft a will naming all of his children except Phebe who was born afterhis death. It was dated 3 Jan. 1764 and probated 4 Dec. 1764. Hissixteenth child was born posthumously. His oldest child would
have been forty-two years of age when John died.
