Lorna Wells Rice: "I went to the Salt Lake City cemetery because I assumed that she would be buried there but they checked their index and said she was not. The next year, when I was in Salt Lake, I checked the microfilm copy of the death records for Salt Lake (FHL# 0,026,553 pg. 48 #1136) but it still didn't tell me where she was buried. Finally I took the burial code to the cemetery and asked ifthey could help me find out what it meant. It was a plot location so the woman went back to the original plot book and there she was. She had been missed on the indexing project and had not been put into the computer. She is buried alone, with no marker, and as the wife of Oliver Harmon. The death record also listed her birth as the 21st, not the 26th and that matched the Nauvoo Endowment record and Palmyra ward records which would both have been first person accounts. Lorna has written a very nice book about Our Sarah Plain and Tall. A must read!

Oliver Norton Harmon Jr.'s history says: His mother died at the age of 74 on August 25, 1862. [Note she was 73 on 1860 census]

The following from Christine Hill: chris@homeandholidays.com
From a manuscript at University of Utah:
George A. Smith, ordained a member of Twelve Apostles on April 26, 1839, was put in charge of emigration in Council Bluffs, organizing and starting the companies on their journey to Utah. With the last of these, he started for the valley in July with his own family and our Sarah, Elijah and Lucinda among the Company, arriving in Great Salt Lake City October 27, 1849.

His wife, Bathsheba W. Bigler Smith kept a diary for the journey that is in the manuscript collection of the Marriott Library of the University of Utah. She says of their trip, "It would be vain to describe how we traveled through snow, wind and rain, how roads had to be made, bridges built and rafts constructed, how our poor animals had to drag on day after day with scanty food; nor how we suffered from poverty, sickness and deaths, but the Lord was with us, His power was made manifest daily. We arrived in Great Salt Lake valley in October, 1849, after traveling over sterile deserts and plains, over high mountains and through deep canyons, ferrying some
streams and fording others, but all was joy now."

A Sarah Harmon was married to William Crosby at Nauvoo on 9 Jan 1846. Not proven if this could be our Sarah. It could have been a first marriage for her if she married prior to her 16th birthday. But no children are listed with census records later that would tend to prove this. I doubt it if is the same Sarah.

MARRIAGE: (Suffield copies) Sarah Louisa married Lysander Eliftors (? not sure of that spelling) Baldwin /Goldwin???? who was born in Kingston, ILL. They had children. LATER: The name turns out to be Lysander Clifton and I am not sure about the Baldwin--it just isn't there. I did find Lysander and Sarah Clifton on the 1850 census of Peoria County, Illinois one page prior to Aurilla Harmon, Sarah's mother. They were married within the year. I know it is them.
Followed them in census records.

The Suffield record says Sarah Louise was born in Cuyahoga Co, OH; the family was at Erie county, PA in 1830, so don't think that is correct. Census says Sarah born in PA.

Sarah Lucinda Harmon
16 March 1822 - 25 April 1894
by Elaine Johnson
Lucinda was the sixth child of Oliver and Sarah Harmon. She was born in Conneaut, Erie, Pennsylvania. All of her older brothers and sisters had been born in Vermont. Her oldest brother died when she was seven years old. Sometime around her eleventh birthday Lucinda's family heard about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Lucinda's parents and some aunts and uncles joined the church and moved their families westward to Kirtland, Ohio. They left her Grandfather Harmon behind in Pennsylvania. Two years later Lucinda's sister Naomi, who was two years younger than she was, dies in Kirtland. Lucinda was baptized 18 November 1839.

BIOGRAPHY: From an autobiography of a grandson, Reuben Oliver Jackman: "My Grandmother Jackman lived across the street and down a little from us and I remember I used to sneak away from Mother early in the morning, usually with my night gown on and run through the yards to her home. On the way I had to go through a yard full of geese. They were big and they would chase me flapping their wings and making an awful noise. I would run and scream. Then Grandma would come out and rescue me and take me in her house. No matter how scared I was or how much trouble it was to get there, the trip was always worth it because Grandma would give me coffee, all hot with cream and say, that tasted good! At home, of course, I couldn't have coffee.
