Nice history in Milo Ward History.Mary Ellen Harmon Hill, daughter of the STURDY DUTCH PIONEER, Oliver Norton and Sarah Jane Rodeback Harmon was born October 31, 1873, at Oneida county, Idaho. After living about two years at Clifton, Idaho, Mary moved with the family to Hoytsville, Utah on the Weber River. here her meager education was commenced in the humble little school of that day. Here she also commenced her church activities by attending Sunday School and Primary. When about eleven years of age, the family moved with an ox team to Camas about fifteen miles away. here she attended school for one year and at the age of twelve years she was obliged to quit school and go to work to assist the family. In her younger years, she remembers wearing blue denim dresses and of washing out her only dress, drying it and putting it on to wear again. Her mother spun and wove cloth with which to help clothe her children. While at Camas she attended Primary at a small place called Merrell, where a dear little Swedish lady was President. She could speak very little English, but she was kind to the children and they loved her very much. They traveled two miles to and from their meetings while there. When she began to work, she received one dollar per week, then $1.50. She did hard work in families of children where the mother had small babies to care for as well as care for the mother. The most she ever made per week was three dollars. A lady hired her to care for her three children and she felt she earned every cent of the sum for which she said they were the most unruly children she ever saw. Through working for others, she learned new ways of cooking and with her meager wages she was ableto assist her family in better living as their diet consisted mostly of bread, potatoes, dried fruit, a few vegetables and not always butter or meat. Her father would always say to his family, "Never complain at whatever you have to eat but make the best of your conditions." He had seen real hard times in his pioneering and appreciated his home and blessings as they were. While living at Camas, her Father was engaged in farming on what they called the bottoms or low lands. He cradled his own grain and Mary helped to shock the grain, pile the hay, and plant and pick up potatoes. At this place, she joined the Y.L. M.I.A. and also attended Sunday School. In 1893, ;when Mary was about twenty years of age, she moved with her parents to Milo, Idaho. Here she joined MIA and the Sunday School and again went out doing house work and nursing mothers and babies. On November 28, 1895, she married George W. Hill. The next summer they moved west of Lewisville where her husband farmed thirty acres of ground. She tells of not having any grease of any kind for two weeks. They did their trading in Idaho Falls because of the stores being so small in Rigby and Lewisville. During the spring and summer, the mosquitoes were so bad at their farm in Lewisville that they were obliged to move out for about three months. Her first child, Josie, was born that fall at Lewisville. In the spring of 1897, they moved to Milo and lived for five years. Her sons, Orsie and Edgar were born. When Josie was two years old and was sitting on her father's lap she was playing with a battle axe from some tobacco and childlike she put it in her mouth and accidently swallowed it. It lodged in her throat and they were unable to locate it or get it out. Mary Ellen immediately sent for her father who was a patriarch. He administered to her daughter, but she obtained little relief. Then they took her to Idaho Falls in a sleigh to the doctor who tried to locate it but could not. The doctor told them they ran a great chance either of an operation and trying to remove it or of leaving it in her throat. They talked it over together and decided to leave it and exercise all the faith possible in her behalf. After three months and six days of worry and anxiery over the little girl, one day she jumped from her father's lap to go and get a drink of water, she began to cough and choke and the battle axe became dislodged and she spit it out. Upon examination of it they found the paint was gone, but otherwise it was unchanged. They always felt that she was saved in answer to prayer and through the power of the Holy Priesthood. After living in various places about Rigby, they purchased ten acres of land from T. J. Campbell. The house was a one-room frame building about 12 x 16 feet which served as kitchen, bedroom, and living room for themselves and five children. Her furniture consisted of a bed, stove, table and chairs, also a home-made box with curtains around it used for clothes press, stand, and other things. The children slept on the floor and the beds were taken up each morning. Earl was born while they were living in this one room. They then built another room the same size which added to their comfort. Here three more children were born. Besides caring for her own family of ten children, she took in washings, sometimes doing six washings per week. She also took in sewing and went out nursing in confinement cases. In 1917, they hauled logs from Cunnard Valley for three more rooms to their house, but three or four years passed before it was complete. They were very comfortable now in their nice home. Two more children were born here, Garold and Vonda, this making twelve fine, healthy, strong children. She was forty-seven years of age when her last child was born and never had a doctor in attendance to any except the last one. Whenever home cares premitted, she continued to go out nursing in confinement cases. With her own, her grandchildren and others she has helped to bring close to one-hundred babies into the world and care for them. She has now in 1935, lived in her home for forty years. She has enjoyed good health until the present time, but so much hard work is beginning to tell on her and she is not able to carry on as she has done. In 1920, she was made a Relief Society visiting teacher. She is now visiting with her fourth companion. She is very capable and faithful in this position. In this year also one of her life dreams was realized when she and her husband were able to take nine of their children to the Logan temple and there have their work done and have their children sealed to them. For about forty years her husband was troubled with his stomach and at times suffered a great deal. He was kind and patient and worked in spite of his distress. When unable to work on the farm, he assisted with the small children and helped about the house while his wife was away. He grew gradually worse and after an operation was performed, he never rallied and he passed away August 14, 1929. She had a life of toil and sacrifice, but her cheerful, sunny dispositon has carried her over many hard bumps in the journey of life. She has been a friend to many, and has many friends, and is loved and respected by her neighbors and associates. She passed away December 9, 1948, at the age of seventy-five. Relationship to her mother-in-law, Harriet Cordelia Bassett Hill: Mary Ellen Harmon and Harriet Cordelia Bassett are 5th cousins. Their common ancestors are Anthony Austin and Esther Huggins.
