Marion Henry HARMON was born on 19 January 1881 in Providence, Cache, Utah. He died on 24 March 1970 at the age of 89 in Ontario, Malheur, Oregon. He was buried on 27 March 1970 in Nampa, Canyon, Idaho.

Life Story of Marion Henry and Florence Edelene (Fogg) Harmon by Leora May Harmon Brown 1961

My father, Marion Henry Harmon, son of Ammon and Margaret (Scott) Harmon was born 19 Jan 1881 in Porvidence, Cache, Utah. Father's parents were farmers and lived in Ohio before coming to Utah. They had a large family of eleven children, three of whom were born in Ohio.

The family left Ohio and began the long, hard trip to the goldfields in California in 1864. They traveled by ox team and many were the hardships and experiences they had along the way. The arrived in Providence, Cache, Utah, where Grandfather's mother, Hulda Dimires Vaughn was living with her 2nd husband, Loren Bassett; her 1st husband having died on the plains as he was returning from a mission for the Church.

Grandfather (Ammon) liked the country and the opportunities around that part of the country and decided to remain there. It was there that my father, Marion Henry Harmon was born. Father's grandmother was the midwife who brought him into the world. Grandfather, like his father, was a farmer, and a carpenter. Both he and Grandmother were converts to the church, joining after they got to Utah. Grandfather, being a carpenter, was much in demand in the settlement and was kept pretty busy. He was away from home a great deal, due to his work, so the greater burden of rearing the children fell upon Grandmother's shoulders. They had many trials and frightening expereinces in their new home. My father tells of one time when a band of marauding Indians came to their door. They simply walked inside as if they owned the place. Grandmother, if she was frightened, did not show it. She picked up a stove poker and drove them out of the house. What wonderful faith and courage those pioneer mothers must have had.

Grandfather brought his family and came to Idaho in 1884, when father was just three years old. They settled in Lewisville, in Fremont County. Father grew up in that community and received his education there. His father still followed the carpentry trade and did a little farming also. Grandfather had a reputation of an honest man and was called "Old Honest Harmon." He was a lover of all children and always had a group of them around him. He was "uncle" to every child who ever knew him. Father's close friends and playmates in childhood were Roy Jardine, Albert Taylor, Andrew and Jo Looslie and many others. They enjoyed the usual childhood activities and especially did they enjoy Primary for theirs was a very religious home. Tithing was always paid in full and paid promptly. In those days they paid in produce as well as cash.

Living conditions were pretty ragged and primitive for the family for a while. They were among the first families to settle in that part of the country. At that time Idaho Falls was known as Eagle Rock and was just a small village. School was held only 6 months of the year and sometimes in winter it was impossible to get to school.

Father was baptized a member of the Church in lewisville 23 May 1889 by Bishop Jardine and confirmed by Elder Will Walker. He was orained a Deacon and astime went on, a teacher and preist and ably filled all assignments and duties given him.

As Father grew into his teen years, he loved to ride the hills and plains. Horseback riding, dancing and singing were also among his favorite pass-times. Father tells of many struggles for livelihood in their new home. The mosquitoes were so bad during certain seasons of the year that the family would have to take their livestock and go to the hills to get away from them. They would have to wear veils on their faces, necks, arms, and long heavy gloves on their hands.
There is much more to this story. See Utah 003 in my files.

BIOGRAPHY:
For an insight into Martin's life, I go now to a history written by his son, Jesse Pearce Harmon:
"My father was married on 22 Nov 1785 to Tryphena [Poole]. My father and grandfather [Nehemiah & Abigail Harmon] emigrated soon after my father was married to Rupert, Bennington, Vermont from Suffield, Connecticut, where my father remained until the year 1799. I remained with my father until I was about 6 years of age. I then went to the town of Lewis (which is in Essex County, New York near Elizabethtown) and lived with John Gibbs."

POSSIBILITIES: In NEXUS 1994 edition there is an article that claims Hannah Bradish's maiden name is Hannah Dunton. Is this the same person as Miss Dunbar? No, I think not 10/94. Jesse Perse's history distinctly says Mrs. Dunbar and not Miss. Martin 's request for pension in 1823 states: "I am not married now."

DEATH: ERIE OBSERVER VOL XVI NO. 2 DEC 6, 1845
DIED: In Girard, on the 21st ult. Mr. Martin Harmon, a revolutionary patriot and pensioner, aged 86 years.

RESIDENCE: 1. He was born in New Marlborough, Berkshire, Massachusetts, where his parents moved before 1752.
2. By 1762, the family had moved to back to their old stomping grounds at Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut.
3.In 1770, they were in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.
4. About this time, Martin's father received a New Hampshire Land Grant and the older men in the family went to Vermont to prepare a home for the family. Martin and his brother, Alpheus probably stayed behind in Massachusetts to help his mother while their older brothers, Nehemiah and Selah probably went to help their father and uncles clear the land and build homes in the wilderness. Their homesteads had to be abandoned during the Revolution.

RESIDENCE: This info from the internet at www.hopefarm.com/essexny.htm:
Essex County, NY History: As a county started on March 1, 1799. Prior to that it was Clinton county, NY. William Gilliland bought up some land and extablished a colony at Willsborough in 1765. A small colony was formed at Westport in the 1790s. Elizabethtown was formed earlier as was Jay and Lewis. All these towns play into Martin' history. Elizabethtown was organized as the county seat in 1799. However from 1799 to 1807, courts were held at Essex, Essex, NY as the county seat. In 1807, the legislature officially designated Elizabethtown as the shiretown. Willsborough was fromed in 1788 from Crown Point. Jay was formed from Willsborough in 1798, so this means that Martin may not have moved around as much as it seemed; the towns just changed names. "The colonists at first produced only the things needful to themselves, agriculture being the main industry, but there soon followed the need for roads, saw and gristmills. These were gradually provided, and as early as 1801 plans were laid to begin iron making from the ores brought from theVermont hills. Anchors and boat irons were made in Willsborough in 1801.

RESIDENCE: "...on the 12th day of March 1772, a county was formed from Albany by the Legislature of New York, to which the name "Charlotte" was given, in honor of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George the Third. This was the actual beginning of the county of Washington; the organization having been retained from that time down, though both name and boundaries have been changed.
"On the east of the Hudson, the south line of the new county began at the mouth of Stony creek; ran thence east three miles and three-sixteenths; thence south to the Batten Kill; thence along that stream to the south line of Princetown; and thence east to the west line of Cumberland county, which was the summit of the Green mountains. From this point to Canada those mountains formed the eastern boundary of Charlotte county. From the mouth of Stony creek, the western and southwestern line followed the windings of the Hudson up to the northwest corner of the present town of Luzerne, in Warren county, ran thence west along the present north line
of Saratoga county to its northwestern corner, and thence northwardly along the present west line of Warren county extended to Canada. The north line of Charlotte was of course the south line of Canada, or the forty-fifth parallel of north latitude.
"It will be seen that the present towns of Easton, Cambridge, Jackson, White Creek, and the southwest part of Greenwich, remained in Albany county. On the other hand, Charlotte county contained all that part of the present State of Vermont west of the Green mountains and north of the northwest corner of Jackson, the whole of the present counties of Warren, Essex, and Clinton in this State, and the eastern part of Franklin county."
Text taken from "History of Washington County, NY" by Crisfield Johnson, originally published 1878.

MILITARY: Martin's pension record says he enlisted Aug 1778 to serve in the Revolutionary War with Massachusetts troops. Previous to this time, he and his brothers had served in Vermont with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys. During the Revolutionary War, Martin served 9 months under Captain Burbank and Major Fernald. In May 1780, he reenlisted and served 12 months as private under Captain Samuel Granger with General Waterbury's Connecticut troops. In the fall of 1781, he was wounded while in camp and returned home where he remained until his term expired.

MILITARY: Martin Harmon, served in the company of Capt. Silas Burbank in the 12th Massachusetts Regiment from July, 1779 to May, 1780

CENSUS: In 1800, Timothy Woodruff lived by Martin Harmon. I found the following information which led me in the direction of Tryphena's correct maiden name:
WOODRUFF, Timothy
Died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Warren Pooler, in Westport, on the 9th instant, Mr. TIMOTHY WOODRUFF, of Lewis, aged 78 years.
The Elizabethtown Post 15 September 1854

POSSIBILITY: Artemus Harmon: The Harmon Genealogy pg. 198: "Father told me about his cousins, Lucina, Oliver, Nehemiah, Alpheus lived near Molley in Erie Co. Lucina came with Horatio and Martin to Erie Co."
[Lucina and Alpheus are children of Martin. Oliver's wife, Sarah; and Nehemiah's wife, Orilla, are children of Martin. Oliver and Nehemiah are children of Martin's brother, Nehemiah who, with Martin, are Uncles of Horatio and brothers of his father, Selah. Molly is the daughter of Selah--and sister of Horatio.
Martin's son, Jesse Perce, after the War of 1812, started west. He spent a year at Sangerfield. Was he with his Uncle Selah? Was his father there also? Did Martin's second wife, Mrs. Dunbar, die on the trip west also? Preserved Westcott was married to Selah's daughter, Abigail and he owned land in Sangerfield in 1814.

MILITARY: The Second Battle of Lacolle Mills was fought on March 30, 1814 during the War of 1812 </wiki/War_of_1812>. American Major-General James Wilkinson </wiki/James_Wilkinson> planned another invasion of Canada </wiki/Canada> to make up for his humiliating defeat by the British </wiki/Kingdom_of_Great_Britain> at the Battle of Crysler's Farm </wiki/Battle_of_Crysler%27s_Farm>. He gathered 4,000 soldiers and prepared for an attack on about 80 British troops from the 13th Regiment of Foot led by Major Handcock barricaded inside a wooden blockhouse and a stone mill.
The Americans planned to bombard the British with their artillery, including 12-pound shell guns and a massive 5-and-a-half inch mortar. The Americans could not bring an 18-pound gun into action because of soft ground around the area.
After the first rounds of the bombardment, the British responded by firing Congreve Rockets </w/index.php?title=Congreve_Rockets&action=edit> at the American positions, followed by several unsuccesful infantry charges against the guns. The British kept up rifle fire and wounded the American artillery commander and his replacement. Hearing the gunfire two miles away, a company of the Canadian Voltigeurs </wiki/Canadian_Voltigeurs> and the Grenadier company of the Canadian Fencibles marched to reinforce the defenders, wading through icy water and slipping through the American lines. The reinforcements then attacked the Americans and were driven back.
More reinforcements, including the Royal Navy, soon arrived to swell the British forces to about 500 men. The Americans, seeing the reinforcements and having little success against the defenses, withdrew back into the United States.

I'm including an interesting item about Martin, which leaves me wondering who the real Martin is! Match this to what is on the GEDCOM. <http://www.usgennet.org/usa/in/state/warrick_co/harmon_martin_s.htm> Martin S. Harmon Martin S. Harmon is a native of Ohio, born October 8, 1837, the only child of Jesse N. and Rebecca (Campbell) Harmon, who were both natives of New York. Jesse Harmon came to Gibson County, Indiana, in about 1840, where his wife died, after which he moved to Missouri, and from there to Illinois, where he followed teaming and saw-milling. In 1872 he came to Warrick County, Indiana, and lived with his son until his death, April 24, 1875. Martin lived with his parents, receiving a limited education, until he was fourteen years old, when he came to Warrick County and lived with an uncle on the farm until August, 1862, when he enlisted in Company E, Sixty-fifth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving three years, participating in the siege of Atlanta, which culminated in the downfall of that city, and through many minor engagements. He enlisted as a private, but in October, 1864, was promoted to Second Lieutenant of his company. At the close of the war he returned to Warrick County, following farming on rented property until the spring of 1867, when he bought a farm in Boon Township, where he lived until the fall of 1880, when he traded for the farm upon which he now resides. He now owns 167 acres of the best farming land in Warrick County. Mr. Harmon and Elizabeth Hart were married December 27, 1865, and are the parents of three children, named Sarah E. E., David A. and Charles M. In politics Mr. Harmon is a Republican, having served two years as Trustee of Boon Township, and he and wife are members of the Christian Church. On the 1850 census, there is NO statement of relationship, I ONLY assumed that Martin S. was the son of Orilla (Aurilla) Harmon, with whom he was living. The movements of the Jesse N. above fit perfectly with the known movements of Orilla and Nehemiah Harmon and the Mormons. Esther Burlington (should be Burlingame); Aurilla was listed as her niece
Diantha Hanchet--Aurilla was listed as her sister
Rebecca Harmon--Aurilla was listed as her mother-in-law. [WHO was her husband????] Was it Jesse N? Have we found a first marriage for Jesse? It is believed that he deserted his wife (who was also his cousin), Emily and Emily's brother came to Missouri and took her and her children to Utah! ]

Residence: I believe that the Sam McClellan in Erie Co. PA is her husband.
Sam and William McClellan witnessed a will of John W. Clark in Erie Co.

I saw a tombstone for Mercy McClellan in Elk Creek Cemetery, Erie, PA.
R. McClellan 1828-1877; Mercy 1830-1899; F. D. 1852-1890

MARRIAGE: Check out the possiblity of her husband being a McClary instead of McClellan. In Vermont Once No Man's Land, there is a David and a William McClary serving in the Rev. War with her brothers and bro in law. William McClary witnessed a sale of land from Martin Harmon to Luke Noble. This is a good clue of relationship possibility. Other witness was Alpheus Harmon, brother of Mary. See Martin 011 in my files.

William McClary in Capt. Tehan Noble's Co, Ira Allen's Regt. Revolutionary War. Alpheus Harmon Corp; Nehemiah Harmon Ensign; also serving Selah Harmon, John Burlingame, & other Harmon families.

POSSIBILITIES: Could her husband have been Samuel McClund? He was a Quartermaster under Colonel Ethan Allen's command of the Green Mountain Boys. See rootsweb for Carroll Co. NH GMB and search for McClund.
