Memories of Grandma and Grandpa (Esse & Estella) by Juanita Price This site and the happenings of this year have caused me to do a lot of thinking about our family. I thought it would be fun to do a little memory gathering. Many of you are young enough that you don’t remember the family gatherings in Fairview at the log cabin home of Esse and Estella Harmon – Grandma and Grandpa. I am fortunate enough to have lived many fun memory times in “the valley” and thought I would share a few. This will be an ongoing saga as things come to mind. GOING TO GRANDMA AND GRANDPA’S Fairview is only about 40 miles from Cokeville, where we lived. Many times Dad would call and tell Mother to be ready and we would drive to Fairview to “visit the folks” when he came home from work. We loved being at Grandma and Grandpa’s. We were always welcomed with love and good food. Grandma baked many loaves of bread at a time and had wonderful jams to go with it as well as freshly milked milk to drink. The adults would visit while we played in the yard or found a corner in the room to quietly read, played games or just listened to the conversations. Have you ever noticed that you find out a lot more by just quietly listening than asking? I loved to hear about what had been happening to the other members of the family even at a very young age. One of my favorite memories is of coming down the road from Freedom, the car filled with wonderfully fragrant foods for Thanksgiving and trying to be the first one to see the house. The excitement level was so high as we all three leaned forward to catch that very first glimpse. I remember times when cars were parked all up and down the road as the families gathered. The house was overflowing literally as we enjoyed the fun of just being together. The spirit of love overflowed within the confines of that small log cabin home and I don’t remember ever feeling crowded, just happy to be with our loved ones. PICKING RASPBERRIES Grandma and Grandpa Harmon had a very large raspberry patch on the North side of the homestead. It filled the field and went clear back almost to the creek that ran back of the home to the East. It was large enough to hide in and not be found for a long time (if you were quiet). During the summer we were expected to help pick the raspberries. Grandma had made holders that were quart bottle jar rings attached to apron strings that tied round your waist. The quart jar would be attached and we were sent forth to the raspberry patch. When the jar was filled we took it in and got another. This did not seem like hard work. We would sit in the row between the bushes eating a handful and putting a handful in the jar, visiting and laughing. Sometimes it would take a while to fill the jars as we loved these large juicy berries, then our Mothers would come out to see what had happened to us as they were running our of berries to bottle. Sometimes Mother would be there picking with us, along with Aunt Mary and we were not able to sit around as long. They sort of encouraged us to get the work done. The reward for picking was a big bowl of fresh berries with sugar and fresh thick cream. There is nothing quite so delicious. Grandma, Mother, Aunt Mary and whoever else was there would bottle the berries. They were wonderful to eat in the winter. We would eat them drizzled over fresh made cake with whipped cream, just plain in bowls or made into delicious pies again served with loads of freshly whipped cream. To this day I am partial to raspberry pie and whipped cream or ice cream. They also made wonderful raspberry jam. It was enjoyed in the evenings spread on thick slices or chunks of homemade bread with large glasses of fresh milk. One of Grandpa’s favorite meals was bread and jam and milk. This was made by spreading the jam on the bread. Breaking the bread into pieces in a large glass and filling the glass with fresh milk. Sometimes it was just bread and milk. I found that the jam made the bread a little less soggy and I was able to enjoy it better that way. This was also a special evening meal enjoyed by President David O. Mckay. It seemed that there were always cousins at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s and we were all expected to help out. I’m sure there must have been complaints at times but my mind has blocked those out. When I think back it is to remember sun filled happy days of play and work when we were at that little log home in Fairview. BONFIRE’S AND POTATO BAKES Have you ever roasted a potato in its jacket in the coals of a bonfire? I remember nights when we would decide to have a bonfire in the way back yard, but still on the house side of the creek. Blair and Larry or Ted would gather the wood and get it all ready and kids from all around would come for a great evening of fun. We would all bring a big potato to bake. The trick was to put your potato where it was buried by coals but not in the flame of the fire. If it were too close to the flame it would burn on the outside and still be hard on the inside. If done correctly it was heaven, soft and fluffy and tasted like no potato you have ever tasted. While the potatoes were baking we would play night games (yes this is not a new invention that you younger grandchildren have thought of). We played hide and seek, run sheep run, and kick the can. The bonfire was the goal and it was fun to work so hard to slip in without getting caught. Some nights we would just sit around the fire telling stories or talking. It was kind of neat to, once in a while, get a glimpse of our parents or grandpa as they walked out to see how things were going. Never coming close enough to disturb the fun but just checking to make sure all was well. As I remember it Dee Anna was usually there with me and the boys just put up with us. We were never made to feel unwelcome but always felt loved and included. Some nights the bonfire would be lit at dusk and the whole family would gather around. On those occasions we usually had a picnic dinner and were able to roast marshmallows for desert. After eating we would be privileged to sit around and listen to the adults tell stories about the “olden days”. Grandpa was a great storyteller and had many trucking experiences to share. It was so fun to be there with Mom and Dad and the rest of the family. The clear starry nights adorned with the smell of clean smoke were wonderful. I have found myself wondering why so many of my memories of my teenage years are centered in this little green valley and have decided that we are very blessed to have a family that loves to gather and just be with one another. The younger boys and Mary seemed more like brothers and sister than uncles and aunt. The boys were great at teasing, the same as brothers do in any family and Mary was always there to talk to or to just listen. She also seemed to always be baking something good to eat. How thankful I am for each of them and the example they set for me as I grew up surrounded by a loving family. Occupation: Farmer & trucker.
