POSSIBILITIES: Film 1,902,903 of Birth, Marriages, Deaths in New Marlboro, Massachusetts:
19 Feb 1804 Julius Hamilton of Hamdin, CT md. Elizabeth Harmon of New Marlboro by Rev. Jacob Coltin.
Could this be Nehemiah's daughter? No parents are listed. We know that Nehemiah and Abigail lived for a time in New Marlboro. Marriage records on this film show the marriage of:
Eunice Harmon of New Marlboro and Amos Mansfiled of Milton, VT md. in New Marlboro by Jacob Colton, Minister of the Gospel on 16 Feb 1793. Since the same Rev. married Elizabeth Harmon and Julius Hamilton, in 1804, I wonder if we have found Elizabeth's spouse. Eunice is Elizabeth's next older sister.

Another Elizabeth Harmon of New Marlboro md. 30 Dec 1784 to Benjamin Cornish of New Marlboro by Jabez Ward, JP. This later Elizabeth would be very young if our estimated date of birth is correct.
There are several known Harmon families in New Marlboro:

DEATH: Obit: "Mrs. Elvira Barnes, of whose death brief mention was made in THE TIMES last week, was the mother of E. S. (Capt.) Bryant, Warren and Charles. She was born at Ashland* this state, and died at the home of her son Charles on Monday night last, at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 22 days.
She moved to this place from Wellington a year ago last April, that she might spend her declining years near her sons, upon whom she lavished the wealth of a mother's love.
Shortly before her illness she began the construction of a residence, but she did not live to see it completed. Her death was caused by dropsy, which though insidious in its outset, was gradually developed, her sufferings became intense, and death came to her as a relief.
She was chaplain of the Ladies Relief Corps, and that body watched over her during most of her illness and at her funeral marched as mourners.
The deceased was a faithful member of the M. E. Church** for 26 years and those who knew her best pay high testimonials to her Christian character. When the news of her death spread through the town, we felt that a mother in Israel had fallen, that the once busy hands closed forever upon the scenes of this world, had opened to behold the beauties of the golden streets and pearly gates of the new Jerusalem.
In the absence of the pastor Rev. I. N. Kalb, the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. M. L. Smith. His text was from Proverbs 16, 31st verse. 'The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness.' More appropriate scripture could not have been selected,
and the comments were beautiful and instructive. The remains were laid to rest in the Van Buren Cemetery."

Emily was buried in Joseph, Sevier, Utah. She has reference number EH1817. She was also known as Emily Frances Harmon.

Spouse #1 Gideon Cooley. Gideon was a widower when he married Emily and he had 4 young children. He and Emily then had 3 children and then Gideon died, leaving Emily with a large family of young children and step children. Spouse #2 Jesse Nehemiah Harmon. Emily and Jesse are the parents of Levi Norton Harmon b. 1852/53 in Tennessee, McDonough, Illinois. Levi Norton married Sarah Jane Harmon who is the daughter of Oliver Norton and Sarah Jane Rodeback. Oliver is the brother of Emily. So their children were first cousins.
Emily Harmon was working for the jailer's wife at Carthage Jail at the time the Prophet Joseph was martyred. (See history of Oliver N. Harmon daughter of Utah Pioneers.)
Legend has it that Emily was maid in the home of Gideon Cooley and Laura Snow.
DESCENDANTS HAVE VERIFIED THAT GIDEON'S NAME IS REUBEN. SEE HIS NOTES.
Lorna Rice: lrice@pacbell.net:
RE: Gideon Reuben Cooley: My grandfather, George Franklin Wells, used to refer to him as
Old Gideon Reuben, always without the Cooley. That he rarely used his first name I am absolutely
sure, but I still think it was there. Osborn Benjamin Cooley listed it when asked to give his
father's full name on the Genealogical Society Family Survey done in Victory Ward, Emery
County sometime between December 1912 when he returned from Mexico and early 1919 when he went to Blanding to help his plural wife Desky Prows who had stayed there on their was back from Mexico. That is where he died of influenza and is buried there in the Blanding Cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY: Emily's younger brother, Oliver, related in his history that a few minutes before the death of Joseph and Hyrum Smith he passed the jail. Everything was quiet. From a short distance, he heard the shots that claimed their lives. At this time his sister, Emily, was working for the jailer's wife. This occured three months before Myron was born and Osborn was less than two years old.

From history of her brother, Oliver Norton Harmon, Jr:
In 1866, he sent his team back to Missouri to bring emigrants, which brought his sister, Emily, to Utah.
Emily's son, Osborn, went for his mother probably using the team his uncle Oliver Harmon sent to bring Emily to Utah. [Emily is still in Missouri in the 1870 census!--at least there is an Emily with J.N. Harmon--age a little off; but it could still be her. Possible that it is a different person due to place of birth!]

Reuben and Emily who had Osborn Benjamin Cooley, who had Myron Osborn Cooley, then his son Ernest Cooley who is my Grandfather. Make any sense? I know it gets confusing to me. Any way like I said both sides tie in which makes my mother related to my Dad etc."

MARRIAGE: From a history of Emily Harmon written by Lola T. Wells, we find: "From records left by Emily Euella Wells Olsen was recorded: "Emily Harmon married Reuben Cooley when his first wife, Laura Snow, died, and raised that family and had three children of her own by Reuben Cooley. When he died she married her cousin, Jesse Harmon and had two sons by him, and then he left her." This compiler remembers Luella Olsen telling about Emily and Jesse. She said Jesse was dishonest with her and made off with her team of fine horses. Adelia Baird told that Emily lost her farm. Could Jesse have been responsible? Anyway, a kind neighbor bought it and gave it back to her.

Emily's grandson, Rosel, said she received a pension because of Myron's death in the Civil War. She gave Osborn and her Harmon sons two thousand dollars with which they bought one thousand sheep to set them up in the sheep business in Joseph.

Nellie Newby Bliss, who grew up in Joseph, gave the following information to Emily Luella Wells Olsen about Grandmother Harmon:
"Granny Harmon lived on (by) the river with her two sons, James and Levi. Granny was a tall, square-built woman, but oh what a lovely lady she was! We used to love to go to her house. She had a large dining room and a living room. They would move out the furniture and dance, and go home in the morning. Her two sons helped her with the housework, as well as farmed. How we loved to visit! They would take us to see the ducks and the calves and the colts.
One time when Granny was sick, the boys brought her to our house for mother (Elizabeth Wells Newby, a practical nurse) to care for. She soon got well and they took her home. We were sorry for we loved her so much. One time she had a sore on the side of her foot and my mother put light yeast dough on it and made it well.
Granny had an older son, Osborn Cooley, who was interested in sheep, so James and Levi helped Brother Cooley. Granny was a faithful Latter-day Saint, and always attended her meetings, especially stake conference. One time President William H. Seegmiller of the Sevier Stake and Granny were at our home for dinner, and how they enjoyed, and loved to talk of old times. Grandpa (Samuel) Wells loved to visit Granny, too, talking of times gone by. He was deaf and would talk right out loud in church. [Samuel Wells was baptized in Erie County, PA about the same time as Emily Harmon]. Emily's oldest granddaughter, Emily Frances Cooley, and Samuel Well's youngest son, Thomas married on 30 Dec 1882 in Joseph.
Oliver Jackman gave this account: "From the time of the settlement of Joseph in September 1872 until a public building was erected, dancing was enjoyed in private homes. A crowd, usually made up of the Powell brothers, Ted Newby, the Wells, the Carters, the Murdocks, John Ross, Mr. Sainsbury who was the fiddler, and others, would go to a home and move out all the furniture into the yard before the family was hardly aware what was up. Old Lady (Emily) Harmon lived across the river, boasted no one could surprise her, so a party was made up for her. Her boys brought her to town and left her at our house. When it was near sundown and they hadn't come, she began to worry about getting home. Mother told her that if she would wait awhile, whe would take her home and stay with her. Mrs. Harmon got so restless that Mother hitched up the horse and started home with her, but first, she had to go to Sister Nelson's on an errand. It was well after dark when they arrived home, In the meantime, everyone had taken another road and had tied up their rigs (buggies and wagons) in the bushes by the river behind the house. We were all in the house. When they came towards the house Mrs. Harmon was grumbling and complaining about her sore feet. She stopped, drew the latch string and opened the door. We all yelled "Surpris!" She took hod of the door frame, kicked as high as she could, "Hell to thunder!" Then she turned around, went out to the granary and we had quite a time getting her to come in again. We cleared the house, danced till midnight, ate our picnic, then danced until two o'clock."

Emma HARMON2640,2641 was born in 1863 in of Sharon, Noble, Ohio. EMAIL: Dear Cheryl,
I have been reading with interest your website about the love letters to Elvira Harmon. I am the great-great-granddaughter of Arnetta Harmon, who is listed near the bottom of your page. I thought you might be interested in visiting a Frances Herron, who lives at Mark Rest Center in McConnelville, Ohio. She doesn't hear well enough to talk on the phone, and she is nearly blind, but she is the daughter of Emma Harmon and is 102 years old. She has very vivid memories of her Grandma Annie, and she is a joy to listen to. Her health has declined some in the last few months, so I don't know how much longer this treasure will be with us.
A distant cousin,

Emma Jane HARMON2659 was born on 18 June 1868 in Plattsmouth, Cass, Nebraska.2660 She died on 7 May 1925 at the age of 56 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho. She was buried on 10 May 1925 in Ririe, Jefferson, Idaho. BIRTH: Listed as a child of Alma Harmon, deceased, in probate packet of Grandmother, Huldah Bassett of Cache County, Utah. She died 12 Oct 1886.
She was 21 years old and residing at Estherville, Emmet, Iowa at the time her sister wrote a letter to the probate court in 1891.

BIRTH: Census in 1880 gives her birthplace as Iowa.

BIRTH: Her death record gives her place of birth as Glenwood, Iowa.

BIRTH: Family records have had Plattsmouth,Cass,Nebraska until I changed it to Glenwood, Iowa on my data base to more clearly represent all the information I am finding; i.e. her death and census records, etc. After corresponding with Marvin Moore, a descendant of Emma's, and looking closely at a map, I am returning to the Plattsmouth birthplace as the family has had it until PROVEN otherwise. Plattsmouth is just across the Iowa/Nebraska border from Glenwood, Iowa.

Emma J., June 1867, 32, widow, b. Iowa
Clara A., February 1894, b. Iowa

CENSUS: So Emma remarried to Frank Leary after 1900. I'm wondering if he was a recent immigrant.

CENSUS: Emma's birthdate of 1867 is a contradiction, but now I find charts with dates of both 1868 AND 1869, and one that is marked over, so I'm really confused, but for the moment I'll continue. (The censuses do all agree she was born in Iowa, so Clara's information of Plattsmouth, Cass, Nebraska, does seem to be in error. I've been wondering if the confusion might be that she
MARRIED Edgar Farrington in Plattsmouth; Rootsweb says that the Cass County marriage records are on file cards and that it would be a huge job to index them.)
