DEATH: From the Abstracted Newspaper Index of Nodaway Co, MO 1869-1900, I found:
Lincoln, Grandma, d nr Hopk. ND 26 Aug 1897 [ND would be Nodaway Democrat issue of 26 Aug 1897]

BIOGRAPHY: On 27 May 1824 in Erie County, Pennsylvania, Caroline Harmon, the first child and eldest daughter of Alpheus Harmon and Huldah Vaughn was born.

BIOGRAPHY: Grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth (Morgan) Vaughn lived nearby along with several Vaughn relatives among whom was her five-year old Uncle Samuel Vaughn, Aunt Damaris (Vaughn) Joles, and Uncle John Vaughn. There were other Vaughn aunts and uncles we have not located, but they probably were not far away.

BIOGRAPHY: The Harmon extended-family were a very close-knit group and most of Caroline’s aunts and uncles and her Grandpa Martin Harmon with his new wife, Hannah Braddish, also lived in Erie County within a few miles of one another. During her entire childhood, Caroline’s parents consistently lived very near Uncle Oliver and Aunt Sarah Harmon; Uncle Jesse and Aunt Anna Harmon; Uncle Nehemiah and Aunt Orilla Harmon and her Aunt Lucina Mecham and Aunt Diantha Hanchett’s families. Caroline’s father’s sisters, Sarah and Orilla, married their first cousins, Oliver and Nehemiah.

BIOGRAPHY: Caroline was probably especially close to her cousins, Naomi Harmon, (daughter of Oliver and Sarah); and Sophronia, (daughter of Jesse and Anna). Naomi, Sophronia , and Caroline were all born in 1824 within a few months of each other. Naomi’s sister, Lucinda–who was just two years older, probably shared special times with these cousins also as the other cousins near her age were boys. Singing, playing musical instruments, dancing, and performing plays were part of the extended family gatherings of her childhood.

BIOGRAPHY: Since she was the oldest child–and a daughter at that–Caroline would have had a lot of responsibilities in the home. Between the years of 1824 (Caroline’s birth year) and 1841–a span of 17 years, Caroline’s mother gave birth to nine living children–one about every two years. This was in the days before indoor plumbing and disposable diapers–before electric lights and central heating! Caroline would have helped tend the younger children as well as learning to do many household tasks including making candles, soap, and cooking over an open fire. It was often the responsibility of the daughters to milk the cow and gather the eggs, tend the garden, and bake the bread. Caroline would also have learned to spin and weave and make clothing. She learned to make rugs at a young age and continued to do so throughout her life. Nothing was wasted in those early days. “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without” was a common phrase that our ancestors lived by.

BIOGRAPHY: The Harmon children attended school and learned to read and write. They all played and some of them even made their own musical instruments. Caroline’s mother often served as a nurse or midwife and Caroline was left to tend the children at home. She probably helped gather herbs and make medicine for her mother to use in caring for the sick.
When Caroline was ten years old, her family converted to Mormonism. Many family discussions were held about the restored gospel and the Book of Mormon was read with great enthusiasm. Here was the gospel of Jesus Christ in its purity and with authority from God. The entire extended Harmon family embraced this new religion as did her Vaughn Grandparents and some of their children. Between 1834-37, the Harmon clan (except Grandpa) had all left Pennsylvania and moved about 60 miles west to Kirtland, Ohio to “gather with the Saints.”
When Caroline was twelve, her young cousin, Naomi Harmon died. She had been ill and had begged her loved ones not to mourn for her because she was ready to meet the Savior and be with her brothers who had passed away before her. Caroline and Sophronia would have missed Naomi dearly.

BIOGRAPHY: Caroline’s father helped build the temple in Kirtland and her mother donated her glass dishes to use in the plaster of the temple to make the outside walls of the temple shine. It was likely in Kirtland where Caroline first learned the art of weaving rugs and she may have helped her mother in making rugs to be used in the temple there.

BIOGRAPHY: The Mormons suffered much in the way of persecution while living in Kirtland. Many early converts apostatized including most of her Vaughn relatives. Caroline was probably quite close to her Vaughn grandparents up to this time. She later named her first two children after them. Her third child was named after her Harmon grandfather and her brother, Henry. In 1837, Charles and Elizabeth Vaughn purchased land again in Erie County, PA and this was when Caroline probably last saw her grandparents. One can only imagine the heart-felt pain of the divisions caused in the family by religious convictions.

BIOGRAPHY: Caroline’s parents and Harmon relatives left Kirtland in 1838, having been chased out by mobs and violence. By 1840, they are living in Springfield, Illinois. In Springfield, Mormon girls and boys found ready employment–in fact, they were preferred for their honesty and good behavior. Caroline and her cousins were teenagers now and probably among those Mormon girls who hired out to help the local people. The young people went to school during the winter and often attended a writing school where they learned to make their own goose-quill pens

BIOGRAPHY: By the time Caroline was 18 years old, her family had moved to Nauvoo–the fastest growing city in Illinois– and the new gathering place of the Saints. Again her father worked on building a temple. Caroline’s mother became a member of the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo on
14 Apr 1842 and the following month, several of Caroline’s Aunts and cousins also were voted into membership in the society. Caroline was voted in on 19 May 1842. The Relief Society was organized to help care for the sick and afflicted, the widow and the orphan and to cook and sew for the temple workers. They worked together as a group of “Sisters” to bring relief to the suffering and to study the gospel together in greater depth.

BIOGRAPHY: At a special conference in August 1842, Caroline’s father was called by the Prophet Joseph Smith to go on a mission. He went in Octobere could reach home. Caroline’s cousin, Orsey (Asa) Harmon, just 5 years older than she, was also frozen to death at the same time. Her father was found with the Book of Mormon under his cheek lying in the snow. Wilford Woodruff preached their funeral sermon.

BIOGRAPHY: What a difficult time this must have been for the Harmon family! Caroline and her 16-year old brother, Edwin, must have been a great help and comfort to her mother at this time. Perhaps the female Relief Society pitched in to assist the family also. Within the next three years, there would be a division in the Harmon family–Nehemiah and Orilla drifted away from the church; Oliver died leaving Sarah a widow and she remarried. Lucina and her husband both passed away and Grandfather Martin Harmon also died.

BIOGRAPHY: At this time in the history of Nauvoo, there was much controversy over the issue of polygamy. We have no record of Hulda or Caroline ever being approached to abide by this practice, but we do know that just over a year after Alpheus’ death, Hulda married a non-Mormon and moved her family to Carthage, Illinois where they were eye-witnesses to the martyrdom of the prophet, Joseph Smith on 27 Jun 1844. Carthage was known to be very hostile toward the Mormons. Caroline left no written history of her experiences, so we do not know what enticed her to leave the church of her youth. Perhaps there was a gradual drifting or circumstances which did not permit close association with the church after a few years. Not getting along with his new step-father, Caroline’s brother, Edwin, left home and headed toward California, but died in the Black Hills of South Dakota along the way. Her brother, Ebenezer, and cousins Oliver Jr. and Lorenzo (son of Orilla and Nehemiah) as young men remained with the Mormons and when they were driven from Nauvoo, bid good-bye to their families and went westward! Soon after their arrival in Iowa, they all joined the Mormon Battalion and participated in the longest infantry march in history from Iowa to the Pacific Ocean. Ebenezer remained in California when the Battalion members were discharged and was never heard from again.

BIOGRAPHY: By 1846, her dear cousin, Sophronia, with whom she had grown up, married in polygamy to Heber C. Kimball. Her cousin, Lucinda, also married in polygamy to Levi Jackman. These three girls married later than usual for young girls of the time period and they all married older men. Caroline was the last of the three to marry and her marriage took place 23 May 1850 at LaHarpe, Hancock, Illinois. Caroline married William Absolom Lincoln, who was nine years older than she. At the time of Caroline’s marriage, her mother was pregnant with her 13th child and had just buried a little girl, Dimrus Delilah who died under the age of two. Regardless of how she lost her children, Hulda deeply felt each loss. She extracted a promise from Henry that he would not leave her, too.

BIOGRAPHY: The years 1854/1855 brought major changes to Caroline’s family. Her younger sister, Elizabeth, at the age of 26, married William Berry; then with her mother and step-father and their youngest children headed westward. The family was heading toward California when they found some land in Iowa that they felt would make a nice farm and decided to stay there. If Henry and Alpheus Amulek were with their parents until now, they did not remain in Iowa. It is said that when Loren Bassett undertook to horsewhip Henry (who was by now a grown man), he could no longer keep the promise he had made to his mother and left home– headed toward California. His younger brother went with him. Henry got sick with Mountain Fever just before arriving in Utah and he stayed with Heber C. Kimball, a dear family friend, until he recovered. By then, his conversion to Mormonism was renewed and he remained in Utah. Alpheus Amulek Harmon worked as a teamster driving ox-teams between Utah and Iowa. On at least one of his trips, he visited his sister, Caroline in Illinois.
Before her mother left Hancock County, Caroline’s brothers Ammon and Alma had been apprenticed to a shoemaker in the area whose name was Mr. Shoemaker. Ammon left the shoemaker and went to stay with Caroline and her husband for the next 5 years. He attended school at this time and worked for William. It is quite likely that Alma also stayed with William and Caroline as Alma later reported that prior to joining the army the boys had worked together every day. Later both boys went to Iowa, and married two Scott sisters on the same day, and then moved to Missouri. Then they went to Iowa where they each enlisted to fight in the Civil War. Ammon was injured and after his discharge traveled to Utah with his mother and step-father while Alma lived in Iowa and Missouri near the Scott family for the rest of his life. Alma became a physician and also a farmer. He and Caroline had a closer association than she had with her other siblings who had moved so far away.
[I have MUCH more]

BIRTH: There is some uncertainty about Caroline's date of birth. Her tombstone reads 1823 and this date agrees with some census records. Her parents were married in Feb 1823, so it could be either way. According to the 1850 census, Caroline was b. 1824; according to the 1860 and 1870, she would have been born 1823; according to the 1880, she would have been born 1827. According to the 1830 and the 1840 census, Caroline was born between 1820 and 1825.

Clarence M. HARMON was born on 3 March 1880 in Bigelow, Holt, Missouri. He died before 1891 at the age of 11. Marvin Moore; P.O. Box 1851; Portland, Oregon 97207 stated: Civil War pension records show the addition of an 8th child, Clarence M. in 1880, who perhaps died young as my grandmother didn't know about him.
BIRTH: Birth date comes from pension of Elizabeth as a widow of Alma and she gives Clarence's birthdate as 3 Mar 1880.

CENSUS: The 1880 census lists him as 3. (must have been meant to be 3 months) See his father's notes for census.

DEATH: Clarence was still alive 19 Mar 1881 when his mother applied for a Widow's pension from Mills Co., Iowa. Clarence was not mentioned at all and presumably not alive at the time his sister sent a letter to the clerk of probate of his grandmother, Huldah Bassett 5 Jan 1891. At that time, his mother and some of his siblings were residing at Estherville, Emmet, Iowa while some of the other siblings were at Glenwood, Mills, Iowa. We may find Clarence's death in Emmet county.

Clarissa HARMON2649 was born in 1791 in Rupert, Bennington, Vermont. She died on 8 May 1842 at the age of 51 in ,,New York. She died on 8 May 1842 at the age of 51 in , , New York.

Since the birth dates we have on Clarissa are estimated, there is a strong possibility this could be her:

It appears that I didn't do my math in the above assumption. If Clarissa was 72 in 1880, that would make her born about 1808 and quite impossible to be the same Calrissa who married Jared Howe in the dage given me by Tim Doyle of March 1817 and having children in 1818. Tim also has a death date for Clarissa Harmon Howe of 8 May 1842--another reason why the 1880 Clarissa Howe could not be the correct one.

As far as Clarissa is concerned, here's what we know: tim@greenscourt.com Tim Doyle: - Clarissa Howe, wife of Jared Howe, died May 8, 1842 (per biography of her son Lyman Howe). After she died, the children were scattered. I just checked the 1860 census and found the following family: 1860 U.S. Census, Wethersfield, Wyoming Co., NY, p. 781 134 127 Lyman Howe 56 M Farm Laborer 100 440 Conn Clarissa " 52 F Vermont Amanda " 17 F New York Polly " 14 F New YorkSo the Clarissa Howe and Amanda Carpenter you found were actually the wife and daughter of a Lyman Howe who was born in Connecticut, not Jared Howe who was born in Vermont. The name Lyman seems to run in several Howe families from what I can tell.
