Stephen Hadlock, was the tenth child of Jonathan Hadlock and Betty Petty. Stephen was born 12
FEB. 1790 at Weare, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.
On 5 Dec 1816, he married Sally Alton. They settled at Jay, Vermont near Sharon, Vermont, the birthplace of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Sally Alton was the daughter of Abel Alton and Irene Sanger. Sally was born on the 23 of Nov 1796. From this union were born ten children.
Stephen Hadlock and his wife, Sally Alton and their family were among those of the exodus from Nauvoo to Utah and started for the Salt Lake Valley in 1947. Stephen left with the same company as Brigham Young. He traveled with his family only as far as Winter Quarters. There he died on 9 Sept 1847 of the plague and was buried there. He suffered much hardships and afflictions because of the tribulations that came to him during the sojourn to the West. After his death, his wife Sally continued to the West with her family of two sons and eight daughters.
Stephen Hadlock joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints in Vermont, and was one of those faithful pioneers who gave his life in coming West to play his part in the building of God's kingdom.

Sally Alton was born 23 Nov 1796, a daughter of Abel Alton and Irene Sanger, in Thompson, Windham, Connecticut and died 29 Feb 1880 in Marriott, Weber, Utah. Buried in the Ogden City Cemetery with some of her children.
Sally married Stephen Hadlock on 5 Dec 1816. They settled at Jay, Vermont near Sharon, Vermont, the birthplace of the Prophet Joseph Smith. From this union were born ten children, two sons and eight daughters.
Stephen and Sally were ready to come to Utah. Stephen had built himself two fine wagons and had two yoke of oxen for each wagon and had all the necessary equipment ready when he took sick and died. He died at Council Bluffs on 9 Sept 1847. That left Sally and her two sons and eight daughters to make the trip alone. They started out with the two boys driving the oxen.
They hadn't gone far when Oren took sick and Sally had to drive the oxen on the one wagon. As they were going to cross the Missouri River the oxen didn't want to go across and they started going down stream with the water. Oren raised up from his sick bed, which was in the back of the wagon, and called to the oxen. They knew his voice and after some persuasion, Sally succeeded in getting them across the river.
When Oren improved and was able to drive the oxen, Sally rode horseback most of the time. She was a very good horsewoman and no one was able to ride her horse.
They spent one winter at Winter Quarters. Here they were building themselves a small house. One day when she was helping, a log fell and struck her in the head, knocking her unconscious, and causing her to be sick for a long time. While she was sick, her husband Stephen, came to her in a dream and told her she would get well and come to the Valley of the Mountains to live. This gave her courage and helped her to get well. The family arrived in Utah in 1849.
