* CAL'S COLUMN *

We had in our last paper some thing about the life of our own great -great-grandfather, Bry Gregory, that might not have been to his credi
But surely no one would think that we want to throw off on "Old Dad dy Bry," or as he called himself, "Old Cuff." We mean to give merely so me of the highlights of the past and things that, we hope, will be of inte rest to our readers.
While we are writing of Bry, we might add that he was born in Chath am County, North Carolina, about 1762 or 1763, and that he entered the Ame rican Revolution at the age of 18 years, when he was a giant of a young ma n, weighing then 214 pounds. He left his home in Central North Caroli na in 1791 and came to William Nixon Hollow, below Pleasant Shade. His wif e's given name was Elizabeth, but this is all we know of her. We are desce nded from this man through his daughter, Bettie who married her own cousi n, Big Tom Gregory. Big Tom and his wife were the parents of 14 sons and d aughters, 10 daughters and four sons. Our father's mother, Sina Gregory, w as one of the ten daughters. She married our namesake and grandfather, Ste phen Calvin Gregory, her third cousin; and one of the ten children bo rn to them was our own father, Thomas M. Gregory, known as Dopher Gregor y. Big Tom and Bettie's last surviving daughter, Aunt Jane Bennett, di ed only a few years ago. About 1914 we secured the names of the descendan ts of this pioneer couple, Big Tom and Bettie Gregory. They had 14 childr en, 142 grandchildren, 565 great-grandchildren, 775 great-great-grandchild ren and 100 great-great-great-grandchildren and this made Aunt Jane the ac tual aunt of about 1,500 persons. Of the 142 andchildren, all are now de ad except nine. It has fallen to our lot to conduct funeral services for p erhaps 40 or more of these grandchildren. Of the 14 sons and daughter s, 13 married and reared families of their own. One son, Gabriel Gregor y, went off to the Mexican War and died, being buried somewhere in Old Me xico. The 13 sons and daughters had an average of 11 children. Of thes e, there are now left only two groups, four of them being the daughte rs of Ambrose Gregory, one of the sons, and the other five being the son a nd four daughters of Aunt Jane Bennett.

Bry was pensioned as a soldier of the Revolutionary War perhaps abo ut 1820, according to some old records in Nashville. His wife died befo re her husband who was thus alone in some measure. The old man about 18 40 deeded to William Parkhurst, "to care for his during his natural lifeti me," the following property as is recorded at Carthage: "One mare and year ling colt, one sow and seven shoats, ten barrels of corn, all my notes a nd accounts, one log chain, sixknives and forks, one patent clock, one wri ting desk, one weeding hoe, one sprouting hoe, one froe, one axe," and per haps a few other items. It has been many years since we read this old reco rd and naturally part of it has slipped away from us. A few years after t his deed was made by the old man, he was on a visit to a friend or relativ e, who lived in a little house that once sat on the side of Frog Bran ch of Nickojack Branch of Peyton's Creek, just below the present home of M rs. George Earps. A winter thunderstorm arose and lightning struck clo se to the house. Old Bry went to the door, raised his arm in defiance of t he Almighty, ripped out a big oath, cursed God and called on Him to "Try O ld Cuff a pop." The words had hardly left the old man's lips when lightni ng struck him and he fell into the yard. His shoes torn from his feet a nd the old man struck dead in a moment of time. It is needless to add th at this dreadful end to a man 85 years of age had a very sobering effe ct on others who might have been inclined to trifle with the Almight y. He was buried in a cemetery at the present home of Robert Earps, abo ut half a mile down the valley, but we have never been able to locate t he grave for no monument marks the last resting place of this man who foug ht with his father, Thomas Gregory, and his brother, William Gregory in t he early struggle of the United States to attain its independence from t he mother country.

GREGORY REUNION SET BRATTONTOWN CHURCH

The reunion of the Gregory family for l955 has been set for Brattontown Ba ptist church, located about two and a half miles west of Lafayette, on Hi ghway 52. This is a desirable location for such a gathering, with plen ty of shade, drinking water and parking space. The time is the third Sun day in August, 1955. This is the usual time for the meeting of the churc h, but the reunion will not interfere in any way with the
religious service.

It is planned now to try to bring together the largest number of membe rs of this Scotch clan in its entire history. Plans will be made to t ry to contact members of the family in North Carolina and Virginia, a nd in the middle states and the far West. The family came to Middle Tenn essee from Chatham County in the closing years of the 18th century, Willi am H. Gregory having arrived from Chatham County, North Carolina, in t he autumn of 1791. He was quickly followed by his father, Thomas Gregor y; and his brother, Bry Gregory, the editor’s great-great-grandfather. O badiah Gregory was another early member of the family who left Chatham Cou nty, North Carolina more than 150 years ago. Another early member of t he family was Billie Gregory, who settled at Wolf Hill, in the present Tro usdale County about 1800.
The editor of the Times hopes to learn a lot more of the history of the fa mily during the months that lie ahead. He hopes to be able to trace a li ne of connection between the present-day Gregorys and Richard Gregory, w ho arrived at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. In the meantime we shall app reciate any help we may have in the way of historical matter connected wi th the family. He desires to obtain all possible data on the genealo gy of the family from its beginning in North Scotland in the ninth centu ry to the present time. Please feel free to write us it you have any da ta on the family.

I exchange data with people who have a interlocking marriage
into any surnames that interlocks into any of the branches
of my families.I started when I was 10 years old now 68years.

I am sharing my data in the interest of collaborative research.
I do this to help people to find there lineages and to fill
the pedigree charts.

I have not personally researched all families listed; dates
and information are subject to verification. Not responsible
for typographical errors misplaced citations. Missing
sources/references are because of my learning curve, not my
intention. You are encouraged to seek further documention
for your own confirmation.Further I have no control what
other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.

If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.

When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.

Also place in the source your contact email
address, and the lineage, so people can contact you
reqarding your update.

I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.

If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people
I have to find in the duplicates and merge them, edit your
notes to ensure that there is nothing there that you do not
want published.

Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.

Remember nothing is carved in stone except time.

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.

My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families. Parents: John Sherman GREGORY and Hanna Belle DENTON.
