My grandmother, Ruby Rhoda Reynolds Crane, used to tell many stories about our
ancestors. One in particular was about being related to Kitty Greene, one of the only
women at Valley Forge at times. That is because she was a bright and adventuresome
woman and also the wife of General Nathaniel Greene. During the revolutionary war, two
friends of George Washington, Nathaniel Greene and his wife Kitty, accompanied him at
Valley Forge and other strategic locations. George, Martha, Nathaniel and Kitty went way
back. They were all Northern New Englanders and participated in many skirmishes
together. Nathaniel was a steel forger by trade and these skills were only a part of his
interests. His name also appeared on the roster of the Boston Tea Party Association,
among others.

Being from Rhode Island in those days is a sure sign that you were different. Roger
William had set up the Providence of Rhode Island based upon complete freedom of
religion and separation of church and state, very contrary to the tenants of England and
the Crown. Nathaniel and Kitty were both born in Rhode Island and were not strangers to
independent thinking and living.

Their loyalty and skills were very much typical of the kinds of people who were needed to
help General Washington as he was beginning his job of securing our liberty from England.
Nathaniel had spent many an hour hanging out in Boston in his youth, in book stores and
wherever he could learn about this new country and the study of war. He had an uncanny
way of knowing just what was needed the most, and George recognized this in him.
Unfortunately, being a Quaker, the religion of his youth was not so free thinking about
participating in war. His participation in the resistance caused him to be suspended by the
Quakers. You can read more about Nathaniel in a book called, "The Fighting Quaker."

At Valley Forge, Greene was Quarter Master General in charge of supplies. George and
Nathaniel's wives, Kitty and Martha were both there with them off and on, sewing for the
men and doing whatever they could to help. There were some fun times too. In a place
called the Bake House, George, Nathaniel and company performed "Cato," the play.
Nathaniel was eventually given command of the continental Army in the South, where his
brilliant resistance finally forced the English to withdraw back into the North. He, like
most of our other great patriots, found themselves penniless after the war and had to sell
off his holdings at Cumberland Island, in Dungeness, Rhode Island. The people of
Georgia, out of gratitude, gave them a plantation, Mulberry Grove, in Savanna, Georgia.
Unfortunately, when he and Kitty retired to their new plantation, Nathaniel's life was cut
short at the age of 44, by a heat stroke, probably a combination of the infamous humidity
and heat of the southern summers. They grew cotton, and were trying to live without
slavery.

Now Kitty and Nathaniel had two boys named George Washington Greene and Nathaniel
Ray Greene, and two girls, Martha and Cornelia. Too bad young George met an untimely
death at puberty. He was born in 1776 while Nathaniel was with George in New York.
Kitty had promised to let George Washington take charge of young George's schooling
and training as a gentleman. Now it was up to Nathaniel Ray, born in 1780, to carry on the
family name.

As Grandma Crane tells it, Kitty advertised for a tutor for the children and ended up with
a nice young man who was very inventive. His name was Eli Whitney and he invented an
idea for harvesting cotton called the Cotton Gin. The Greene's were very supportive of
Eli. Soon his invention became famous. But that is another story. Anyway, a few years
after Nathaniel died, Kitty moved her family back to New England in 1786. In 1796 she
married her new manager and business partner Phineas Miller.

It is here that I have not yet traced the thread entirely. But in our genealogy, a Miss
McFarland married Peter Reynolds I, born about 1762 in Vermont. Then Rhoda Mariah
Greene, born in 1795, married Peter Reynolds II, born about 1794 in New York. Was
Mariah the daughter of young Master Nathaniel ? If so, he was very young indeed to be a
father. Or was Rhoda related to Kitty and Nathaniel in some other way? Grandmother
Ruby said that her branch of the Reynolds family married into the Greene family.
Grandma Ruby's maiden name was Reynolds. It is just not very clear.

Grandma said the Reynold's name used to be MacReynolds. They move from Scotland to
Ireland and then to America where the Mac was dropped from the name. She said they
had political problems because they were supporters of Bonnie Prince Charles of Scotland.
When he went into exile, many of his followers then left Scotland. The MacReynolds first
went to Ireland and then to New England. (In Marjorie's notes, she says after arriving in
America, Rhoda married into the Greene family and her son was Nathaniel Greene.)

The time line of Major General Nathaniel Greene of Warwick Rhode Island was 1742 to
1786 and Catherine Littlefield Greene (Kitty), of Block Island, Rhode Island was 1755 to
1814.

From the marriage of Peter Reynolds the II and Rhoda Mariah Greene, their son,
Leeman Dyer Reynolds married Catherine Jane Smith of Harper's Ferry, VA. She may
have come originally from Holland. I have a date here of 1831 in New York next to
Leeman's name. Grandma Ruby said Leeman was in the Civil War on the Northern side.
Their children were named Arzenio, Felicia, Alva, Frank, Ruben, George, Martha and
Zilpha.

Arzenio Washington Reynolds was born June 9, 1853 in Southfield, Oakland Co.,
Michigan. Arzenio married Imogene Nima Nims, born September 6, 1857 of Elmira, Tioga
Co., Pennsylvania.

Grandma used to tell the story that her parents were married March 4, 1874 and came to
California as honeymooners. They traveled on the Trans-continental Union Pacific
Railroad cars that made the first trip across the continent to California after the railroad
was done. Arzenio and Imogene ended up in LA and worked near Los Angeles on the
Rosencranz Ranch.

Arzenio and Imogene were real pioneers. They got a homestead and set up housekeeping
raising wheat and 10 children. They had acreage in the Perris Valley where they dry
farmed barley, late alfalfa, and almond trees. (Today it is named Sun Valley.) They also
had pepper trees and century plants. For cash money, they ran harvesting machinery to
serve the surrounding farmers. Marjorie's notes, across the valley Lilly Rock formed
Strawberry Valley.

Grandma Ruby was born when they were in Menifee, in San Diego County, CA on August
24, 1888.

Marjorie writes, "Ruby was the golden haired songbird, and played the organ, sang when
she was not riding. Her hair was so golden that a $20.00 gold piece could be hidden in her
hair, and frequently was. Unfortunately at that time women were not given a college
education. Ruby finished high school and that was considered enough. But she continued
to read and educate herself. She married Roy Crane, one of the harvest hands who was a
clean and high principled man."

Roy, Daniel Leroy Crane, was born in Stanford, Monroe Co. Indiana June 7, 1884. He
was a happy kind of guy and loved to play the guitar and sing. Ruby played the piano and
accordian. They were a complete band when Roy added the harmonica and his foot pedal
drum to the ensemble. His parents were John Nathaniel Crane and Susan Fultz. John
Nathaniel was born July 2, 1847 Stanford, Indiana and Susan was born March 28, 1848 in
Wellsville Ohio. John's dad was named John Crane also and he was married to Abigail
Burch. John was born February 24, 1806 in Maryland. Abigail was born May 16, 1814 in
North Carolina.

Ruby and Grandpa Crane, Roy, got married August 20, 1908, just two days after Ruby's
20th birthday. Roy was 24 and a farmer too. They were on a ranch in Corona when their
first child Lillian was born. From there they went to ranch in Imperial. Next about four
miles south of Mexicali, across the border in Old Mexico, Roy and his brother Luther
took their families to raise cattle. They were in Mexico for about four years until Pancho
Villa made life too dangerous to stay.

Marjorie writes, "Ruby would go to town in a buckboard for supplies and with a revolver.
The children were left at the ranch with the Chinese cook. The contraband food came
across the border in the false bottoms of the buckboard.

Times were primitive there. It was nothing to see the Rurales (soldiers) lasso a Chinaman
and drag him behind the horse until the poor man was dead. The Chinese would come into
Mexico and try to get smuggled into the US. Many died in the attempt. They were robbed
and thrown out of conveyances as one would discard a dead dog."

My great Grandma, Ruby's mom, Imogene died August 22, 1916 in Santa Ana, Orange
County Ca. Great Grandpa Arzenio outlasted Imogene by 21 more years dying in East Los
Angeles June 21, 1937. They had sixteen children. Roy was one of 17 kids. Whew! Ruby
and Roy ended up with 8 children. One daughter of the 4 was my mom, Marjorie Evelyn
Crane. Grandpa Roy passed on December 10, 1960 and Ruby, true to the long life in her
family was 92 when she died, in Chula Vista. San Diego Co., CA November 7, 1980. She
was quite a gal!

One of the great joys of getting to know your Grandparents is getting a sense of your
heritage. Now days we are all so far apart, there is little chance to visit and pass along
these stories. So it is a goal of mine, and evidently it was of Marjorie's also, to pass along
whatever we could glean about our family. I found Mom's stories in amongst all her
paperwork and photographs. We have a wonderful family and perhaps this web site will
help all of you to appreciate it even more.

If you have any suggestions, additions, corrections, or deletions, please let me know. This
is a family treasure we can keep alive and it will definitely grow. I guess by now we have
done our fair share of populating the great state of California!
