Dr. Dabney EWELL was born in 1786 in , Albemarle, Virginia, USA. He died in December 1854 at the age of 68 in , Coffee, Tennessee, USA. He was buried in , Coffee, Tennessee, USA. Dabney has reference number 348. Birth: Age 64 in 1850 Fed Census of Coffee Co. Tenn. seperate from wife with Daughter-in-law Elizabeth, in Dist 1. In notes of Ened Roughton Sept 1988
Death: Tombstone inscription of just the year of birth and death

From Notes of J. Lewis 1992: Dabney was a Physician who came from Virginia to the Gossburg area of Bedford Co. Tennessee, before 1820. This area became part of Coffee Co. Distric #1 after 1836. He attained a large tract of land, built aand operated a plantation. He owned several slaves as shown in the 1820 thru the 1840 Fed. Census. In 1850 census, he owns 9 slaves. He was listed as Justice of the peace in Bedford Co. in 1829, and he was a well known practicing Physician in Bedford, Coffee and Rutherford Counties.

Also in notes of J. Lewis 1992, Ken Floyd's of Nashville, are written:
"I believe that Dabney Ewell was married twice. The 1820 census shows six children, some as old as 10 years, a woman age 26-45, in Dabney's Household.
Evidently, Dabney either divorced this first wife or she died shortly after the 1820 census, because he married Dovey Davidson in 1821. The 1830 census shows in Dabney's household, a younger wife, Dovey being abt 27, some additional children- at least four of them, probably children of Dabney and Dovey. Some Children of the first maarriage are not indicated in 1830 - perhaps have married."
Notes of J Lewis,1992 The 1850 Coffee Co. census shows them apart- Dovey with Daughter Harriettt Roughton, while son, John, and wife, Elizabeth are living with Dabney. On Jan. 18, 1851, Dabney executes a most unusual document to Dovey. A deed, recorded in Coffee Co. Deed Book G pg. 314, is maade to Dovey for a negro girl, "a slave for life", by the name of Jemima. In this deed, Dabney solemnly promises "to defend title to Dovey and her
heirs against any future claims by Dabney and his heirs."

Death: Dabney died in December 1854 and family tradition has him buried in "the Ewell graveyard" located on the Lawrence Branch Rd. in Coffee Co. This "grave yard was supposedly destroyed in the 1950's and no trace of it is left. However no other known Ewell is buried there and it seems that anyone as well known and as wealthy as Dabney, would have a prominent gravestone, so we are still looking.

This day James Tuggle prays him to the court to appoint him curator of the minor children of Layton Ewell who died, James R, Pleasant, America A, Eliza J and Martha Ewell. James Tuggle was appointed and that he give bond to the state of Missouri for the use of said minors in the sum of $2000.

A note written by Robert Ewell Henderson, that he believes that the children were all split up and were adopted by different families. However he hasn't been able to find any families that they lived with or were adopted by. He believed that his Great Grandmother was adopted by a family named Gibson.

Apparently Lieghton didn't really die in these above two probate records. It is believed that He abandoned his family and possibly married or had other children in the time that he was gone. The Richard Randal Ewell family has a picture believed to be Lieghton Ewell, when he came back to Kentucky, after about 20 years later, when he just suddenly shows up, very much alive. See website for photo.

A letter from Richard Leighton Ewell to ?, stated that "My grand-father LEIGHTON EWELL married an ATHEY - he with William Cottingim and James Hales who married sisters to his wife moved to this county some 95 years ago.
My grand-father had two sons by his first wife, John H. and Thomas M. The latter is my father. Both have been dead about 60 years.
My grand-father also had a daughter Susan who died about the same time. My mother used to tell me that Susan was so pretty that that it dazzled the eyes to look at her." She married a man named Matheny and left a son Leighton, who some 25 years ago lived in Sodalia, Mo.
My grand-father married a second time, left some children by that marriage. One of them, Pleasant H,. lives in California, but I don't know his address.
My grand-father served as Sheriff of Knox Co., Ky,. several terms. He moved to Mo. in about 1835(?), and died near Richmond, Mo. My Uncle "Jack" Ewell was never married. I am the only child of my father, am 72 years of age-Born 26 Jan. 1833 in Knox Co., Ky. Lived nine years in Mo, leaving the state in 1845. I was a orphan in early childhood and was severed from my relations and hence know but little of the history of my people, but I feel certain we are "kin" of the Ewell family. Very Truly, R. L. Ewell" Dec. 26th 1905

Noraye Sinclaire, a descendant of Lieghton Ewell, recalled the stories told by her grandmother, Alice Ewell Mullens. Alice said that Richard Leighton Ewell told her that Lieghton abanded his family and for years they thought he had died. Then suddenly he shows up a few years before his death. During those years of abscence, the family suspected that he may have fathered another family somewhere.
[Perhaps that explains two probate records found in Buchannan Co and the other one in Ray Co. Missouri.]
Bob Henderson said that in some unknown source Lieghton may have settled in North Carolina.
In a letter from Penelope Ewell Heard to Charles Oscar Ewell, dated Dec 1st 1902, it indicated that Lieghton had 14 children.

In 1841, Pleasant Ewell, listed as son, was baptized for his deceased father, Maxcey Ewell and mother, Ann Ewell in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois in 1841. Others were listed as Pleasant Ewell being their brother. They were John Ewell, Jesse Ewell, William Ewell, Sarah Ewell, Mary Webster. Pleasant as Uncle: Maxcey Ewell, Joel H. Webster. Pleasant as cousin: Ann Thompson

About Maxcey Ewell's name:
Some have speculated that Maxcey Ewell's name is "Thomas Maxcey Ewell". Research does not prove that to be the case. On all legal documents where his signature is found, he signed his name as "Maxcey Ewell". Various records such as land and court records, 1790 census etc. are consistent to list his name as Maxcey Ewell. .
Some research has been done on the speculation that maybe Maxcey given name was chosen because it was his mother's maiden name. The Maxcey surname is found in Virginia but no connection has been found.

About the research for Maxcey Ewell's Parents:
As of October 2002, documentation for parents of Maxcey Ewell has not been found. However, a William Ewell could be his father. A letter, that I received in 1988, from Pansy Ewell, and had reprinted in "Roots and Branches", [The Ewell Family Soc. newsletter #3, Fall 1989, page 7 and 8], quoted a statement, written by A E Heard of Evergreen LA to Charles Oscar Ewell. Mr. Heard and C. O. Ewell were first cousins and great-grandsons of Maxcey Ewell. The letter was dated Dec 1, 1904
"Grandfather Ewell [John Ewell] was born in Albemarle Co. Virginia in Feb 1772. His grandfather, William Ewell, was the original Ewell. Three brothers, John, William and Maxce, came to America. Maxcey died single and John went back home. Papa [name?] told me this."

Various Military records were searched hoping to find Maxcey Ewell, listing parents. No pension records were found. However, letters written by Maxcey Ewell to Thomas Jefferson were located. Maxcey was asking for help to receive payment for the 3 years of service in the civil war. Thanks to Steve Lewis, they were found in the Library of Congress, manuscript division, among the Jefferson Letters. This is the only proof, to date, that he served in the Revolutionary War. Now they can be found on the Internet.
Ref: memory.locgov/ammem/mtjquery.html Type in the keyword search, "Maxcey Ewell"

Maxcey Ewell's parents are listed as Edward Ewell and Sophia Taylor in the IGI and Ancestral File in FamilySearch.Org. Research hasn't found any proof for these parents. Lack of documentation, along with the fact that there is not even evidence that they were in the same area, would give a researcher serious doubt to such a conclusion. Also, it does appear that Maxcey named his children after relatives and their children's children, seemed to be consistent with that tradition. To date, the names Edward or Sophia have not been found among their descendants.
The best guess for the reason Edward and Sophia are believed to be the parents of Maxcey is because of a letter written by Col. George W. Ewell, to Dr. Nathaniel McG. Ewell. in Jan 1944, listing his ancestors. This letter was printed in a family history type book, "Baker ,Combs, Ewell, Neale-Reede, Mardland and Watts Families" by Caroline Opsus Markland Carpenter. Found in the FHL 929.273 B 171c
I also found a letter that Col. George W. Ewell wrote to William T Ewell on the 6 Jan 1950, "I am of the opinion that Maxcey is the son of Edward." No explanation or documentation were given.

About a son named Maxcey:
There is a possibility that Maxcey had a son named Maxcey, not named in Maxcey's will. Possibly died as a child? There are Family Group Sheets that one can find, that lists a Maxcey Ewell as a son of Maxcey, with no sources listed. However, it is interesting to note that in a 1950 letter from George W. Ewell to William T. Ewell Jr., George lists a Maxcey, as the 2nd child, with no birth date. Perhaps he had some family knowledge. Also, Hazel Ewell, in her research notes, lists a " Maxie" as a 12th child of "Thomas (?) Maxey Ewell". [ Note the question mark that was in Hazel notes]

About the possible grave site for Maxcey Ewell:
On Maxcey Ewell's property, purchased from his father-in-law, John Mullins, there are three or four field stones located on a small hill, east of the present day house. This farm is located in a small community known today as White Hall, in Albemarle County Virginia. Present day residence and neighbors are aware of those field stones and believe them to be the markers for humane grave sites. They have no knowledge of who is buried there. The story is told that when someone tried to bury a cow there, a neighbor protested, saying that those stones are marking grave sites. Research, by William Albertson, has confirmed the burial places for others who have resided there and eventually moved away. Maxcey and with his wife Ann, as well as their sons, Jesse, William and possible son, Maxcey, are not accounted for. Mr. Albertson noted that if was customary, for the times, that the resident family, would be buried on the first hill, east of the family home. Parents: Mr. EWELL, William and Mrs. EWELL.

My best guess is that Pleasant married Mary, after Elizabeth Clapper Smith left Council Bluffs. Vera Tillman, in her book, "How Deep My Roots," Page 17, stated that her ancestors, left Council Bluffs, in Aug, 1846 and settled the town, Plum Hollow, now known as Thurman, Iowa. This group of woman, who's husbands inlisted in the Morman Battalion, left a month after their husbands. I suspect Elizabeth left with that group of women, as she was a resident there with her children. See "Forney's Five Family Records" book, page 34. Son, William F. Smith, states that he and his mother left Plum Hollow in Feb. 1852.
The timing lines up with the birth of Daughter, Martha Ewell, born 2 Sept 1847, just a year later.

Spouse: Mary WIEKEL. Mary WIEKEL and Pleasant EWELL were married about 1846 in of, Pottawattamie, Iowa, USA. Marr: Their family is listed in the 1850 Fed Census of same County

Sarah EWELL was born about 1790 in , Albemarle, Virginia, USA. She died before 1841 at the age of 51. She was also known as Salley. Sarah has reference number 348. Birth: Birth place was given by her Niece, Barbara Ann Ewell Evan, Proxey for her Baptizm in 1884. Date was estimated

Marr; The Ewells in America, by James Hunter Ewell Pg 121, has Sarah maarried to Ezekial Taylor in Accomack Co VA. 16 Apr 1816. [ Is this the Sarah that is really Maxcey Ewell 's Daughter?]

Sarah may have married a Dr. A Martin, because of two different probate records found in Albemaarle Co Virginia.
However, one could also conclude from the same records that Dr. A Martin was her physician.

7 Nov 1831, in a Will of a Maxey Ewell, dec'd, in a court settlement, Dr. Thomas Ewell is the Executor, cash was paid to several members of Maxcey Ewell's children
including Dr. A Martin. Ref. Film 030215 FHL

On the 15 June 1835, a sum of money was paid to A. Martin for Sarah Ewell, which had been omitted at the last settlemnet of Maxcey Ewell's will. Ref: Film 030216 FHL

Death: Pleasant Ewell, a brother, did baptizims for his deceased siter Sarah Ewell, in Nauvoo, Hancock, Ill.in 1841. {Note that Sarah's surname is listed as Ewell. Mary, the other sister of Pleasant Ewell was listed as Mary Webster, listing her by her married name. One could conclude from this that Sarah died unmarried.

?Sarah is the daughter of Dabney Ewell, son of Maxcey Ewell. Ref: Dorthy Melton, descendant believes this didn't send any documentation or theory.
In Ancestral File submitted by James H. Ewell, states she was born in Davidson
Co Tenn in abt 1838. I can't find any documentation anywhere for that.

There is evidence of the Sarah, wife of M J Duke, to be the daughter of Dabney and Dovey Ewell. One is that Dovey Ewell is living with them in the 1860 Coffee Co. Tenn. Fed Census age 57.

Both Sarahs cannot be daughters of Dabney and Dovey because the1850 census records,
Sarah, age 18 and Mordici Duke are in Coffee Co TN and Sarah, age 25, and William Todd are in Cannon Co. TN. Parents: Pleasant EWELL and Barbara FAUBER.

Mr. EWELL William was born about 1720 in of, , Virginia, USA. No real record of Maxcey Ewell's Parents were found. It was suggested that the temple work be done, as Mr and Mrs. Ewell. After seaching for all these years and not finding them, the hope is (now that their work is completed) that they will be able to help us find more needed information.

As of Nov 27, 1998, we are not any closer than in 1988, when I recieved a letter from Pansy Ewell, indicating that William is Maxcey's father. (See "Roots and Branches", The Ewell Family Soc. newsletter, Fall 1989, page 7 and 8.) Perhaps Maxcey should have been sealed to " William" instead of just a Mr. Ewell.

Spouse: Mrs. EWELL. Mrs. EWELL and Mr. EWELL William were married about 1741 in of, , Virginia, USA. Estimated marrage date from Maxcey's birth. Children were: Maxcey EWELL.
