DUNN, son of William DUNN and Barbara (CALLARMAN) DUNN 2:13, died October 1843, Stark County, Illinois Daniel K. DUNN was identified from census, marriage and county biographical records researched by compiler as documented in this sketch. The only written reference the compiler has found to Daniel DUNN is a listing of Benjamin A. NEWTON's wife, Susannah DUNN's, siblings in the biography referred to under William H. DUNN. That reference indicated Daniel was deceased as of 1887. He was not listed in the 1850 census of Stark County. Thus we speculate he died young. This was confirmed in July 1992 when the compiler found Daniel K. DUNN's heavily damaged tombstone, knocked off its base and leaning against James H. DUNN's stone in Snareville Cemetery, Stark County, Illinois. The stone listed Daniel K. DUNN's date of death as October 1843. Parents: William DUNN and Barbara CALLARMAN. Stark County, Illinois, Marriage Book 2, Page 22, shows Martha DUNN married Horace MORRISON September 8, 1869, wed by a justice of the peace. A guardian bond in Stark County, dated September 7, 1872, finds John HARMON appointed guardian of Orlando DUNN and James DUNN. On January 13, 1873, John HARMON, guardian of Elizabeth A. FRANCIS, Orlando DUNN and James DUNN, reported the sale of their interest in land, subject to dower rights of Mrs. Martha A. MORRISON, widow of James H. DUNN. County Judge Hugh RHODES made the appointment following a petition by Obadiah DUNN, filed August 31, 1872, which reads as follows: "The undersigned Obadiah DUNN of the County of Stark aforesaid respectfully represents that Orlando DUNN and James DUNN, residents of the said County of Stark, are minors of about the ages respectively of 14 and 12 years, that they are children of James DUNN, deceased late of same county and have no guardian. "Your petitioner further represents that the said minors Orlando DUNN and James DUNN reside with their mother, Martha A. MORRISON, now intermarried with Horace MORRISON, that said Horace MORRISON is an intemperate man and beats, kicks and otherwise abuses said minors, and has frequently threatened to kill them. "That said minors are kept at hard work and not permitted to attend school or obtain any education and that said minors can neither read or write and as your petitioner is informed and believes do not know the alphabet, that they are growing up in that great ignorance and unless removed from their present surroundings will most likely degenerate into intemperate and vicious habits. "Your petitioner further represents that the said Martha A. MORRISON, the mother of the said minors, is an unfit person to have the care, custody and education of the said minors entrusted to her. "Your petitioner further represents to the court that said minors are the owners of an undivided one eighth part each of the Southwest Quarter of section 32 in Township 14 North in Range 7 East of the fourth principal meridian in the said County of Stark, subject to a right of dower therein of the said Martha A. MORRISON, but that from neglect and mismanagement, the said premises are entirely unproductive to the said minors. "In order therefore that the said minors may be properly reared and educated and that their estate may be held and applied for their benefit, your petitioner, who is a brother of the said minors, prays the aid of the Court in the premises, that this Court will appoint John HARMON of the said County of Stark, an uncle of the said minors and a fit and proper person, or some other suitable person, the guardian of the said Orlando and James DUNN and that the Court will direct that said guardian have the custody, nurture and tuition of said minors and the care, control and management of their estate. "Your petitioner therefore prays that the said Obadiah DUNN and James DUNN may be summoned to appear before this court at some convenient time to answer to this petition and that the said Horace MORRISON and Martha A. MORRISON may be duly notified of this proceeding in such manner as the Court shall direct and that the Court shall take such other and further action in the premises as to the Court may seem right and proper." Judge RHODES, documents in the file show, set September 7, a Saturday, as hearing date for Obadiah DUNN's petition. On September 16, 1872, John HARMON, Samuel G. BREES and Miles A. FULLER made $600 bond for the additional guardianship of Franklin P. FRANCIS and Elizabeth A. FRANCIS, minors, who had married. On November 4, 1872, John HARMON petitioned to Judge RHODES for the sale of the land owned by Orlando, James and Elizabeth. "Said premises are a part of them brush lands and part in cultivation, but that the fences and improvements are greatly out of repair and that it will require a large sum of money to be expended in repairs and improvements before the said premises can be made productive," the petition read. "Your petitioner believes that it is necessary and that it will be for the interest of the said wards to sell their interest in the premises and to apply the proceeds of such sale to the support and education of said wards. Your petitioner believes that the shares of said minors in the said premises are worth about $300 each." In joining sister Elizabeth to the petition, John HARMON wrote: "Your petitioner further expresses that the said Elizabeth FRANCIS has no money or other property neither has her husband any money or other property with which to purchase necessaries and furniture to commence housekeeping and that they are in great need of money for such purpose." Orlando DUNN's marriage record indicated parents were James DUNN and Martha STURM. Marriage Book 2, Page 46, shows Elizabeth A. DUNN married Franklin P. FRANCIS, August 5, 1872, ceremony performed by an elder of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Marriage Book 23, Page 51, Stark County, Illinois, shows another wedding performed by an elder of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, with "Terrinca" DUNN marrying William H. ROBERTS, January 8, 1873. The compiler early in his research came to believe Amanda DUNN, 1860 census, was either a 20th century transcription error or a 19th century census taker's mistake for Orlando and bet that Lucretia, Lirrincy and Terrinca DUNN are all the same person. Subsequent research bore out this belief. Vi ROBERTS, who married a descendant of William H. ROBERTS, told the compiler the name was "Trincia," and her tombstone in Snareville Cemetery, Stark County, Illinois, identifies her as "Trince DUNN ROBERTS." Vi also reported Elizabeth A. DUNN was known as Ada. A biography for Benjamin A. NEWTON in "Settlement and Progress of Stark County, Illinois," by M.A. LEESON, M.A. Leeson & Co., Chicago, Illinois, 1887, identifies Mrs. (Susannah) NEWTON's brothers and sisters, including James DUNN, deceased. Martha (STURM) DUNN's second husband, Horace MORRISON, died March 2, 1902, according to his obituary in the Stark County News, Toulon, Illinois. He and Martha moved from Bradford, where he had lived since 1850, to Osceola Grove, six miles west of Bradford, in 1880. His marriage to Martha, the obituary indicated, was November 8, 1870. Martha and a son, Alva MORRISON, survived. The Bradford Republican, a staunch anti-liquor newspaper, was not kind to Horace MORRISON. On January 16, 1902, the paper reported: "Horace MORRISON, an old soldier, was housed in town over Sunday. But the first of the week was taken to the county farm. Another chapter was thus added to the interminable story of wrong, of suffering, of heartaches, of regrets, to be charged up against intoxicating drinks. For this now aged man has spent a fortune in the hell broth which ruins everything and any person it touches." On March 6,1902, the Republican ran this unusual obituary: "In 1820, near a sea port town in the state of Maine, was born a child, destined to develop into a magnificent specimen of muscular manhood. The boy's early life was passed in the quiet of well trained home surroundings. When temptations came to early manhood they found a nature by reason of his strong individualities when once under the sway of passion and appetite ready as in a hot bed for the germinating of evil tendencies. The life of a lumberman for several years was not calculated to soften nor eradicate these things and the seeds of intemperance and excesses bore its legitimate fruit when Horace MORRISON passed away as a ward of the county on Sunday, March 2. "Nearly fifty years ago the deceased came to this vicinity, then a little more than thirty years of age and no doubt one of the most muscular men ever a resident of this county. On the breaking out of the war of the rebellion he enlisted as a private in Co. B, 112th Ill., Inft. He was captured at Cleveland, Tenn., and held for a long time as a prisoner of war at the Andersonville prison pen. To add to his sufferings there he had a badly injured foot at the time, the effects of which he carried through life. He was a kind hearted man in the main, and accomodating as a neighbor. He was buried Wednesday at Osceola Grove. How different might have been his life, his example and his death had it not been for that cursed drink which has damned hundreds of thousands of lives before him and will do so the end of time unless the people says it shall not be." Martha MORRISON's obituary in the May 27, 1908, Bradford, Illinois, Republican was a bit kinder: "Mrs. Martha MORRISON, aged 82 years, a pioneer resident of this county, passed away Thursday evening at the home of her son, Alva MORRISON, in Osceola Grove. Since last January, she had been confined to the house by infirmities of old age. Part of the time she was confined to her bed, but up to a few weeks before her death she appeared to be improving. "Mrs. MORRISON was born October 7, 1826. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Kate STURM, early residents of this county. Her entire life was spent in Osceola and she was well and favorably known throughout that vicinity as well as here. She was married to James DUNN, who died 48 years ago. She was later married to Horace MORRISON, but he died six years before his wife. "Seven children are left to mourn the death of their mother: Uriah DUNN of Ottumwa, Ia.; Wallace DUNN, Elmira; Mrs. Ada FRANCIS, Texas; Mrs. Trincy ROBERTS, Modena, Ill.; Oral DUNN, Osceola Grove; James DUNN, Ladd, Ill.; and Alva MORRISON, Osceola. "At twelve o'clock Saturday noon, the funeral service was held. Rev. Mr. ALLEN, of the Baptist church, was in charge. Interment took place in the Snareville cemetery where the remains of Mrs. MORRISON were laid beside those of her first husband." She first married Milton Eldon NEWTON, son of Harold H. NEWTON 5:13563. Milton NEWTON died in 1963 and June Ann married Franklin DeBOER, but the compiler did not learn of her work until after her untimely death. We are, of course, indebted to her for the information she has compiled, via which the compiler can link his own research. LEESON's "History of Stark County, Illinois, 1887" showed that John HARMON owned 134 acres in the northeast quarter of section 32, Osceola Township, in 1887. A biography of William Jasper HARMON 3:1314 in "Biographical Record of Bureau, Marshall, Putnam and Stark County," published circa 1896, reports John HARMON was still alive, a resident of Castleton, Stark County, Illinois, at the time the text was written. "At a very early day," reports this biography, "John came to Illinois, locating near Springfield, where he engaged in teaming and burning charcoal." John and Margaret made their home in Springfield until after the birth of their oldest child, then went to Osceola Township, Stark County, where they purchased 160 acres just north of property that later belonged to William Jasper HARMON. Margaret (DUNN) HARMON died about 20 years before the biography was written and John HARMON married a second time, fathering an 11th child, Blanche, by his second wife, Sarah (THORNTON) WILLIAMSON, born 1838, died 1906. John HARMON's obituary, in the Bradford, Illinois, Republican, reads as follows: "Uncle John HARMON, for many years a respected citizen of this township, died at his home in Castleton after a long illness, on Friday night, September 14. Deceased was born in Grand Lake, Rensellaer County, New York, on July 8, 1816; came to Illinois in his twenty-first year, and four years afterward in the season of 1841, settled in this township. "In 1839 (Sangamon County marriage records show 1841-compiler), he had been united in marriage with Margaret DUNN. To them ten children were born, all living except a daughter. His wife, Margaret, died March 20, 1877, and some time afterward he was again married, his last wife being Mrs. Sarah WILLIAMSON, and to this marriage one child was born. "Uncle John, as he has been universally called for years, was an exceptionally upright, honorable citizen, noted for his strict probity and truthfulness, kind to family and neighbors. He leaves behind the fragrant memory of one who has walked faithfully in the light of the Golden Rule. "Of the family who mourn his demise are his wife, ten children, forty-six grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren. Rev. PROUTY, of the M.E. Church, conducted the funeral services Sunday morning; interment in Smith Cemetery. The REPUBLICAN offers sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased, all of whom are well known and respected." The Stark County News, Toulon, Illinois, contained a short obituary of John HARMON in its Castleton correspondent column: "John HARMON, an old and much respected citizen of this township, quietly passed away Friday evening. For several weeks he has been in very feeble health. He was born in New York July 8, 1816, and at the age of 21 came to Illinois where he has since lived. "All who knew him were his friends. Never has it been our privilege to meet with a more upright man in all his dealings. Whatever was said by him could always be relied upon. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand to the needy, and lived every day in accordance with the golden rule. "He leaves a large family of sons and daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to mourn his death. The funeral was held at the home Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. M. PROUTY of the M.E. Church. A large procession of relatives and friends followed the remains to the Smith cemetery, where the casket, covered with beautiful flowers, was born by six grandsons, and deposited in the tomb. "Thus, the life of one who, during his journey of 84 years upon earth, is ended, and to say in judgment that a good man has gone to his reward." John HARMON's daughter by his second marriage, Blanche, married Alfred H. KOPP of Bradford on October 9, 1902. Blanche was the central operator of the Bradford telephone system, and her new husband was an electrician, according to the wedding notice in the Castleton correspondent's column in the Stark County News. The Bradford Republican's July 18, 1934, edition carried Sara Blanche (HARMON) KOPP's obituary, reporting she was born January 4, 1879, in Penn Township, Stark County, Illinois, and died at her home in Bradford, Stark County, Illinois, July 15, 1934. Her husband and a sister, Mrs. Nellie SNELL - her mother, Sara (WILLIAMSON) HARMON's daughter by her first marriage, survived. An adopted daughter, Dorene, preceded her in death. John HARMON's second wife died in October, 1906, prompting this paragraph in the Bradford Republican: "Our hearts were saddened on hearing of the death of Mrs. Sarah HARMON, of Bradford. When we mentioned her illness last week, we never expected that death was so near, and the word came as a startling surprise to us. She and her daughter, Blanche, were among our people for years, where they were respected and held in esteem by all. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the relatives and especially the daughter, with whom she lived, who is now alone, without a kind mother - her best earthly friend." Both John and Margaret HARMON are buried in Smith Cemetery, north of Castleton in Stark County, Illinois. Children of John and Margaret A.
