Clairborne DUGGER was born between 1775 and 1785. Parents: Alexander DUGGER and Ann PROCTOR.

Daniel DUGGER1682 was born in 1690 in ,Surry,Virginia. He died on 3 March 1776 at the age of 86 in Brunswick County, Virginia.2000,2001 Notes from Ray Shamlin's family page.

Legend says, that 3 Dugger Brothers came from Scotland to the Yadkin Elk,having settled for a time near Petersburg, VA. I have seen others givethese 3 brothers names, Daniel, Benjamin and Julius. They say Benjaminmigrated to Brushy Fork, near the present day Holtsclaw settlement, thatDaniel went to KY. and Julius to what is now Carter Co. TN. Well, recordsshow that the Duggers stayed in the VA. area for many years and a fewgeneration as far as I can tell. But I am not opposed to the story that 3Dugger brothers immigrated into America from Scotland, I believe this isprobably true. Perhaps 2 of the brothers migrated, but Daniel obviouslystayed in VA. Where he is reputed to be buried.
The Dugger family was in the America's before NC was formed. The King ofEngland had given the Dugger's land grants to develop iron and zinc minesand to export lumber back to England long before the American Revolution.
There was a William Dugger who was a member of the VA. House of Burgessesin 1656. First court record in 1717, if you assume he was at least 21years of age that puts his year of birth at 1696. There were three knownDugger's in VA. records prior to Daniel's appearance. One source statesthat Daniel may have been born here and not an immigrant. So we have totake a look at these three men as possible father's. 1) John Duggard, wasimported on Nov. 29, 1674 No proof he isfather to Daniel. 2) Abraham Dugard, imported on April 20, 1689 I don't think this man is a likely candidate -Abraham was never used as a family name with the Dugger's. 3)John Dugar, imported May 2, 1705 no proof that he isDaniel's father.

From what I have learned, Daniel Dugger is generally thought to be theprogenitor of most of the Southern Dugger families. As of this writing,8/2000, researchers tell me they have not found another Southern Duggerfamily line that has proven not to be linked to Daniel and wife, Mary.

On Feb. 20, 1716/17, Daniel "Duggard" and wife Mary were listed as nextof kin to Edward "Scarborow", deceased, and came into Surry Court andmake an oath that Edward had died without leaving a Will. This let's us know that Daniel andMary were married before the above date.

In March 1716/17 Daniel "Duggard" as administrator of EdwardScarborough's estate, presented the inventory and appraisal of the estatein Court. On March 201716/17 the above inventory and appraisal was recorded with a value ofL30.9.1 I have no idea how totransfer that into the American equivalent of cash. On Feb 17 1719,Daniel "Duggard" administrator, paid cash to Grace Lucas and "daughterDuggard" from the estate of Edward "Scarborow" , deceased. On Aug. 17,1725 Daniel "Duggard"received a patent for 125 acres in Surry Co. VA. Southwark parish on bothsides of Buckhorn Branch, adjoining William Lucas and Jereimah Ellis. Apparently, Daniel and Maryresided on his property until 1756, when he gave the property to his sonHenry Dugger. I haven't located "Buckhorn Branch" in Surry Co. VA.
A land patent to someone else mentions their land bordered Daniel Duggerand Marmaduke Cheatham and also stated the land was on the North side ofMain Blackwater Swamp. This makes it clear that the land was in what isnow still Surry Co. VA. A land patent dated June 10, 1737 to WilliamJordon for 350 acres in Surry, for land on the North side of MainBlackwater Swamp mentions that it adjoins said Jordon, Thomas Collier,John Collier, Daniel Duggard and Chetam (Cheatham) Daniel Dugger was absent from public record for the next 19years. On April 17, 1756, Daniel Dugger of Surry gave his 125 acres ofland to his son Henry Dugger, with the land described as on both sides ofBuckhorn Branch, and bordering Stephan Collier and Marmaduke Cheatham.Daniel reserved his life rights to the land, meaning he could remainliving on the property until his death. . Henry Dugger remained in Surry until 1777, apparently his parentsdecided to move to Brunswick Co. VA with their other children prior to1773.
Daniel Dugger was listed in the 1773 Tax List for Brunswick Co. VA.
Daniel Dugger and "wife" were mentioned twice in the Bath Parish Registerof Dinwiddie and St. Andrews Parish (which was the Parish coveringBrunswick Co. VA.) On Jan 20, 1773 they were named "Daniel Dugger for hisand his wife's maintenance". Apparently they were given an allowance intheir old age. .They were named again 11 months later on Nov. 27,1773 with the sameentry, an apparent allowance. .

As for Daniel Dugger, the above is the last record I have found - thisdoes not mean it is the last record. Some researchers list his death yearas 1776, probably because Mary Dugger only was named in the 1776 ParishRegister entry for an allowance, indicating that Daniel had died by then. So, it means that Daniel had died between Nov. 27, 1773 and March 3, 1776.

On March 3, 1776 and April 1, 1777 Mary Dugger was mentioned "for hermaintenance" in the Parish Vestry Book {Bath Parish Register of Dinwiddieand St. Andrew's Parish Vestry Book of Brunswick by William LindsayHopkins, 1989 - pages 96 & 97.

Find out if Petersburg is in Brunswick or Petersburg Co.

Chris Sosa claims Daniel's birth in Surry Co. VA. He gives 8 children tothis couple to my 11. His are: Richard, William, John, Benjamin,Elizabeth, Lydia, Henry and Sarah. He has Lydia married to MarmadukeCheatham, this we know is not so. (end of Ray's notes).

......January 1811, and settled ....James Dugger, Esquire, came at thatsame time and settled on the place Carrol Marks now lives. They came fromDavidson Co. by Columbia, crossed Richland Creek at John Jones', nowFitzpatrick's: came the Gideon road to Pulaski: camped their first nightat William Gideons near the factory, and thence traveled over Locust Hillto Leatherwood Creek; kept on the ridge because the cane was small on theridge, and there was no undergrowth of timber or bushes, and in someplaces no cane. Where there was no cane, the ground was covered with peavines. They kept along the ridge and went down at the point where WilliamArrowsmith lived; and when they struck the creek they kept up the bed ofthe creek to avoid the large cane, and even cut a log that was across thecreek and rolled it out to travel the bed of the creek as far as theycould, in preference to cutting their own way through the large cane onthe creek bottoms.

Event: Court Record MAY 1748 Surry Co. NC Court charged with Bastardy
Event: Court Record JUN 1749 Surry Co. NC Court charged with Bastardy

Elizabeth was in Court several times for Bastardy, none of her childrenhave been identified. Researching are working on these children. IfElizabeth ever married it was after 1749.
There is a court record that reads: Elizabeth 'Duggall', and has her inCourt April 1746 in Surry County VA for having a bastard child. The caseis dismissed "for certain reasons" , but wasn't more specific. Do notknow if this is our Elizabeth with a misspelled or misread name, butseems very possible that this is the same person. Child could have diedor perhaps one of the court elders were the child's father? Who knows.
In May 1748 Elizabeth Dugger (spelled Duger) and Lydia Dugger (spelledLidda Duger) are in court for having bastard children. They are mentionedon the same record.
In June 1749 Elizabeth Dugger (spelled Dugar) and Lydia Dugger (spelledLedia Dugar) are both called into court for bastard children.
In October 1749 the last Will and Testament of Thomas Board isacknowledged by Witnesses Ann Williams and Elizabeth 'Dugall'

He appeared in the census in 1800 in Wilimington, Brunswick, North Carolina. John appeared in the census in 1820 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee. He appeared in the census in 1830 in Stewart County, Tennessee. He died on 23 March 1834 at the age of 84 in Stewart County, Tennessee. Notes from Ray Shamlin's family page.

Chris Sosa names him John Harrison Dugger.

Named in will of Marmaduke Cheatham dated April 30, 1762 It leaves A cowand a calf. It implies but does not prove, that he may be John's father(Or even grandfather) Can not rule out that there may be other reason'sfor naming John in his will. According to a source on line, MarmadukeCheathams father is Thomas Cheatham of Proctors Creek, Chester Co. VA.who died in Henrico Co. VA.
Nearly every record of John found in Brunswick Co. VA., refers to him as"John Dugger, Surry" It is assumed that he took his nickname (or tittle)from the county he was born in, Surry Co. VA. and used it to distinguishhimself from his Uncle, John Dugger Sr. and his son John Dugger Jr., whowas about the same age as John of Surry. This is a common way ofdistinguishing between different people of the same name in the same area.

It has been suggested that John's wife Frances was his first cousin,Frances Dugger, daughter of John Dugger Sr. But it has not been proven. This family left VA. and moved briefly to Orange Co. NC and then on toSumner Co. TN where they remained.

Migrations Project. www.migrations.org/individual.php3?record=11231 has:
John Dugger, 1749-1834. born Surry Co. VA.
Migration steps: to Brunswick Co. Va. in 1767, to Dinwiddie Co. Va. in1780, to Orange Co. NC in 1788, to Sumner Co. NC in 1798.

Additional notes: Before the move to TN., John was frequently referred toas Surry John Dugger to distinguish him from his Uncle John Dugger, Sr.and his cousin John Dugger, Jr. Accompanying John Dugger on hismigrations were his wife Frances and children Sarah, Leonard, James,Anna, Luke, Dred, Flood and Frances. Sarah and Leonard married in OrangeCo. NC and their spouses joined the group. The family of John's brotherAlexander Dugger was among the party until Orange Co. NC, where theychose to move to Maury Co. TN. Researcher; Joyce Stark Blocker

Julius Caecar DUGGER was born in 1718. He died in Fish Springs, Carter, Tennessee. He served in the military in Revolutionary War. Julius was buried in Fish Springs Cemetery, Carter, Tennessee. The following is a presentation put together by Martin Grant - a Duggerdescendant for the pro's and con's of whether or not there truly was aJulius Caesar Dugger.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Julius Caesar Dugger, Tennessee Pioneer of 1766

William Dugger Sr. (c1720-c1773) aka Benjamin Dugger Sr. aka JuliusCaesar Dugger Sr.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is Julius Caesar Dugger? Myth? Mixed up family tradition? Or just ahard to find person?
What proof is there of this man?
What can we determine based on all available evidence?
If not Julius, then who? Benjamin Sr or William Sr?
What about Mary Kincaid, wife of Julius C. Dugger?
What are the opinions of others?

The Problem:

This is a very interesting (and confusing) topic. Here is the gist of theproblem: My ancestor Mary Dugger (c1750/60) and her brothers Benjamin(c1747), William (1750), and Julius (1760) are children of either WilliamDugger Sr. Benjamin Dugger Sr. or Julius Caesar Dugger Sr. The problemis, that all are claimed, but what are the facts?
Conventional wisdom and family tradition all say the latter, that JuliusC. Dugger is the one. There are so many books and articles in print andfamily records that claim it, so it has to be right, right? That is theargument heard most often.

The evidence:

Julius C. Dugger, according to J. G. M. Ramsey (1797-1884) in his bookAnnals of Tennessee (1853) he claimed that Julius Caesar Dugger andAndrew Greer were in the Watauga River area by 1766, being the first (orsome of the first) white settlers in that area. There has been plenty ofevidence located on Andrew Greer, so that part seems to be indisputable. However, no original data has been found on Julius C. Dugger, none atall. Everything that has been written or said about him, has been basedon this 1853 book and on family traditions.

Let us examine a few things, first of all. The only printed records wehave of Julius C. Dugger (Sr.) is a very brief mention in a book writtenin 1853, which claims he was in TN by 1766. (I'll call this source #1 orRamsey)

The next thing we have are some stories told by Benjamin Carter Dugger(1813-1891) a Georgia State Congressman, who was a grandson of JuliusDugger (1760). He told some interesting stories. (I'll call his source #2or Benjamin C. Dugger)

The next item we have is an article on the Dugger family included in: AHistory of Watauga County, North Carolina. with sketches of ProminentFamilies, by John Preston Arthur. Richmond: Everett Waddley Co. 1915.This article is quite interesting also. ( I'll call this source #3 orArthur)

The next thing is a small write up in a book put together by DAR:Tennessee Records- Tombstone Inscriptions and Manuscripts, in 1933. (I'll call this source #4 or Vaught)

The next thing we have are the memoirs of George F. Dugger (1816-?) agreat grandson of William Dugger (1750), he collected some interestingfamily stories as well. I don't know when George wrote his memoirs, butconsidering when he was born, they were no doubt written no earlier thanthe 1930s or even much more recently than that. (I'll call this source #5or George F. Dugger)

So what do each of the above five sources say. First of all let me statethat all of these were written long after Julius C. Dugger would havedied, so none can be considered primary evidence, or even secondaryevidence. For a brief review, let me explain what primary evidence is.Mainly, it is anything written while a person is alive, and involves theperson in a direct way. This includes items such as deeds, wills, marriage records, baptisms, tax lists, birth certificates, court records,Bible records and other such items. Secondary evidence is similar toprimary evidence, only in that the person was not directly involved withmaking the record. This can include obituaries, tombstones and anythingthat was prepared after the death of a person, or even while alive ifthey were not involved in it, such as a biography or newspaper article.Primary and secondary evidence is usually - but not always - reliable. Each record must be carefully weighed and it's value determined. Anythingelse is considered tertiary evidence. This includes family traditions, family histories and similar items. These are usually based on opinions, memory, family stories handed down and hopefully, some form of primary orsecondary evidence.

Okay, now lets examine the evidence. What primary evidence is there ofJulius Caesar Dugger? The answer is : None. His name does not appear on acensus, a tax list, a deed, a court minute or any other record that Ihave ever found, nor have any other researchers been able to turn upanything.

What secondary evidence has been found? The answer is again: None. No onehas found an obituary, a newspaper article, a tombstone or any otherrecord that may have been produced in his lifetime or shortly after hisdeath. That only leaves tertiary evidence, in the form of the 5 sourcesmentioned before. The earliest which was written in 1853. Now for somesimple math. If Julius Caesar Dugger was the father of Mary, Benjamin,Julius etc, when was he born and when did he die? Benjamin is the oldestof the group, born ca 1747 or before. If Julius C. is his father then hewas born at least ca 1726 or before, just an educated guess. This meansthat in 1766 he would have been roughly 40 years old. Even if he lived tobe 100 (as some traditions state) he would have died ca 1826. Someonethat long lived should have left some record of his existence. A seriousdrawback to our search is that the census records for TN for 1790, 1800,1810 and 1820 are lost, so we can't see if there was an older JuliusDugger listed. The 1830 census shows Julius (Jr.) (1760) listed, thoughcertainly Julius (Sr. would have been dead by then.

Now let us first talk about source #1, the 1853 mention of Julius Dugger. In 1853, "Annals of Tennessee" was published. The Author was J. G. M.Ramsey (1797-1884). I've been told that Mr Ramsey and Lyman Draper(famous for his "Drapper Collection") shared much research regardingfolks in East TN. We don't know where Ramsey got his information aboutJulius C. Dugger, if it was from Draper or elsewhere. Unfortunately, thebook does not state the source for his statement about Julius C. Duggerbeing in TN by 1766. We can perhaps assume that Ramsey interviewed someof the Dugger's in east TN, who told him of their ancestor who was in TNso early. The majority of the Dugger's in east TN in the 1850s would havebeen children and grandchildren of Julius Dugger (1760-1838). So perhapshis name came up and was applied in error to the supposed pioneer of1766. That is one possibility at least.

Source #2 - Benjamin Carter Dugger's comments and stories - not yetavailable .
In source #3, "A History of Watauga County North Carolina" by JohnPreston Athur, 1915, he mentions the Dugger's in two separate articles. He mentions three brothers:
"...who come from Scotland and stopped awhile near Petersburg, VA. namedBenjamin, Daniel and Julius. Ben stopped at Yadkin Elk, Daniel went toKentucky and Julius settled near Fish Springs on the Watauga River,Tennessee. (page 222)
The Benjamin he is referring to (based on the rest of the article and thenext one) is clearly Benjamin born ca 1747, also called Benjamin Jr. bysome researchers. That means his brother Julius has to be the one born1760, also called Julius Jr. by some researchers. Arthur makes no claimsas to who the father of these three are, so this doesn't help (or hurt)the Julius C. Dugger theory. The next article (page 303) basicallyrepeats the above, but gives much more data on Benjamin's children.

Source #4 comes from Elizabeth Carriger Vaught (Mrs. W. M. Vaught) ofElizabethton, TN. She sent information to be published in "TennesseeRecords Tombstone Inscriptions and Manuscripts" 1933 (published by DAR).Her article (pages 292 through 296) is quite interesting, and of greatvalue. The first thing she gives us is this:
Children, as known, of Julius Dugger, Sr. and wife: William born 1750,Julius Jr. born 1760, Mary, married first, Lawson Goodwin, second JacobSmith.
Julius Dugger Sr. had two brothers. Ben settled at Brushy Fork, NC. Fivedescendants of his are buried in Brushy Fork Burying Ground. Davidsettled in KY.

The above contains several errors. First of all she claims that JuliusDugger Sr. (aka Julius C. Dugger) was a brother of Ben Dugger of BrushyFork, but that isn't correct. Ben was a brother of Julius Jr., Mary andWilliam. Also, Mary Dugger didn't marry Lawson Goodwin, that was her son.She married Drury Goodwin. Also, no record of David of KY has been found.I wonder if this is the same person Arthur (source #3) refers to asDaniel Dugger who went to KY. A handwritten 'David' and 'Daniel' areoften hard to distinguish.

Next, Mrs. Vaught gave the children of Julius Dugger Jr and Mary Hall.Later in the article, she lists Julius Sr.'s children again, and thistime states he had two brothers (David and Ben) and a sister Mary. Shedidn't say who Mary married, so I 'm not sure who this is, or if she isconfusing Mary (m 1-Goodwin, 2-Smith). She also mentioned that traditionstated that Julius Sr. and wife returned to Virginia in their old age tovisit realities, and died there. She didn't include any documentation onJulius Sr. (or Julius Jr. for that matter) but did include transcripts oftwo Wills, that of William Dugger (1750-1839) and William Dugger(1784-1875) son of Julius Jr. Both are quite valuable and interesting, but not helpful with our current subject. So, basically,Mrs. Vaught'sdata continues the Julius C. Dugger tradition, though she refers to himas 'Julius Dugger, Sr.' and later as 'Julius C.' (according to Ramsey).

Source #5 George F. Dugger's comments and stories - coming soon ( pleaseremember I am copying this from an article off the internet, by MartyGrant. I may not return to get the information)

Conclusion
What can we conclude from the above data? Well, there are a fewpossibilities. Here they are in no particular order:
1. Julius Dugger Sr. (or Julius C. Dugger) was a real person, who forsome reason left no shred of contemporary evidence of his existence.
2. The was a real person about whom the traditions speak, who was thefather of Julius(Jr), Ben,William and Mary, etc., but over the years hisname got mixed up with son Julius (Jr) in the family traditions.
3. This is sort of the same as #2 above, but with a twist. 'Julius Caesarwas a nickname used by friends and family, for the Mr. Dugger inquestion, but was not his real name, and was not used on any publicrecords.
Of the above, I prefer #2 (and perhaps #3). I think William Dugger Sr.(1720-1773) is our ancestor. He was the person the tradition spoke of,but they either just simply got his name mixed up with his son Julius(1760) or else he had a nickname of 'Julius Caesar for some reason.
If not Julius, then who? Benjamin Sr. or William Sr?
Of Julius C. Dugger was a nickname, or a mistaken identity, then who isthe person the stories are referring to? There are two candidates:William Dugger Sr (c1720) and Benjamin Dugger Sr. (c1724), both of Surryand Brunswick Co. VA.
William Dugger was born ca 1720 or earlier (based on his first publicrecord in 1741 when he witnessed a deed, assuming he was then twenty-onethen). William Dugger was listed in Brunswick Co. VA records beginning in1741 and listed in various records there dated 1741,1744, 1747, 1750 and1752. In October 1752 William Dugger was in Granville Co. NC. He waslisted there in various records dated 1752, 1754, 1755, 1756 and 1758. Insome of these records he shown to be a neighbor of Julius Nichols(perhaps a namesake for Julius Dugger born 1760!). William Dugger beganappearing in Pittsylvania Co. VA. records in 1762 and was listed there inrecords dated 1762, 1765, 1767and 1768. In 1768 he deeded some livestockto Benjamin Dugger(the record doesn't say so, but I believe this isBenjamin born ca 1747, and this is circumstantial proof that William ishis father). By 1771 William Dugger was in Surry Co. NC. and listed thereagain in 1772. That is the last recorded we have found for him. Based onthe other records, it is clear he was in the section of (then) Surry Co.NC which is now on the border of Watauga Co. and Wilkes Co. near theCaldwell Co. corner as well. There is a Dugger Creek there, a DuggerMountain, a Little Dugger Mountain This is the area that Arthur referredto as "Yadkin Elk". William Dugger was on the 1772 tax list, but not the1774 tax list. A widow Mary Dugger was listed on that tax list, so anatural assumption is that she was his wife. This Mary later went toCarter Co. TN. near Julius (1760) and William (1750). Her last record wasdated 1787 in Washington Co. NC. (now TN). At that time Carter Co. TNdidn't exist, and was part of Washington Co. and the entire area wasstill part of NC.
The above shows (to me at least-Marty Grant) that William Dugger and hiswife Mary are the prime candidates for parents of Julius, Benjamin,William and Mary etc. No solid proof, but strong circumstantial evidence.William Dugger (1750) was born (according to his children) on March 4,1750) in Wilkes Co. NC. The area where William (Sr) and Mary were inSurry Co. NC. became Wilkes Co. in 1777 when that County was formed. The1775 tax list (Surry Co. NC) shows Benjamin Dugger (c1747) and WilliamDugger in the same household. This seemingly proves there are brothers.Julius Dugger (1760) also owned land in the same area as proven byseveral Wilkes Co. records in the 1780s. This shows that all of thesefolks were in the same neighborhood at the same time.
Now, obviously, I think William Dugger Sr. is our man, but what aboutBenjamin Dugger Sr.? He was born ca 1724 (based on his first publicrecord dated 1745, assuming he was at least twenty-one). He was listed inSurry Co. VA in 1745, witnessing a deed. By 1749 he was in Lundenburg Co.VA. On a tax list he was listed with nine tithables that year. He wouldcount as one tithable, but who were the other eight? They would have tobe white males age 21or up (or possibly age 16 and up) or else slaves. In1755 he was listed in both Brunswick and Lunenburg Co. VA records. In1755 he purchased land from John Dugger Sr. (his brother) in BrunswickCO. VA. In January 1756 John Dugger obtained an attachment againstBenjamin's Dugger's estate, stating Benjamin had "absconded", which meanshe left the county owning money or with a pending judgement against him.
The 1756 record is the last I've found of Benjamin Dugger Sr. There is agrave marker in the Howell Cemetery in Watauga Co. NC (where much ofBenjamin Dugger Jr's family is buried) which shows a Benjamin Dugger died"1795". Now, Benjamin Dugger (c1747) died in 1815 as shown by variousrecords, so if this is his grave, it was mismarked whenever first placed. It does seem to be an old marker according to Gene Blair and John Heaton.A newer maker has been placed with the same information. I don't know ifold Benjamin Sr. (c1724) wound up in that area and died in 1795. He couldhave, or it could be the grave of Benjamin (c1747) with the death datemis-marked. Since here is no birth date or age at death given, we can'tbe sure. Otherwise, the 1756 record is the last we have on BenjaminDugger Sr. That is the main reason I don't consider him our guy. Wherewas he after 1756? He could have been off exploring the "west" (i.e.Tennessee, Kentucky, etc.) for several years then returned to NC in timeto die in 1795 and be buried there? This is certainly a possibility. Hewasn't listed on the 1790 census in NC (though Benjamin c1747was).Unfortunately, the 1790 census was lost for VA. TN. and KY., so id he wasin that area we've missed him.
So, Benjamin Dugger Sr. is a possible choice for father of Benjamin(c1747), William (1750), Mary (1750/60), Julius (1760), but he would bemy second choice, after William Dugger Sr.
What about Mary Kincaid, wife of Julius Caesar Dugger?
The Julius C. Dugger mystery is further complicated by his alleged wife'Mary Kincaid' sister of Andrew Greer's wife Ruth Kincaid. Where did thisname come from? None of the early sources I quoted above mention them assiblings. Robert Nave(see below, under Other Opinions) claims that it wasspeculation on the part of Mrs. Vaught (source #4 above), and after herdeath her sister (Lula Carriger) published her notes and listed it as"fact" and that is the beginning of it. Most people just except itwithout question once it is in print ( a bad habit). William Dugger Sr.died ca 1772, and in 1773 a widow Mary Dugger was listed on the tax list,so it is a natural assumption that she is his widow ( which I agreewith), but there is nothing to prove or even suggest that she was aKincaid. See Mr. Nave's comments below, as he explains it better than Icould.

Robert T. Nave

In her book "The Dugger Family" by Frances Dugger Rowan, she published ashort commentary by Robert T. Nave, a noted Dugger researcher. Here iswhat he said:

"Family tradition claims that Julius C. Dugger was the ancestor of allthe Dugger's who settled in what is now Carter Co. and Johnson Co. TN. Heis cited in Ramsy's 'Annals of Tennessee along with Andrew Greer, whowere supposedly the very first settlers in Tennessee in 1766. Tennessee
historian, the late Judge Samuell C. Williams, contended that they wereactually traders, not settlers at that time, and this appears to becorrect.
Greer did become a settler later and Dugger may have also.

The late Mrs. Elizabeth Carriger Vaught, a Dugger family historian, speculated that Greer and Dugger were brothers in law, having marriedsisters named Kincaid, but they were both from the Valley of Virginiawhile Dugger was from the south side of Virginia and Western NorthCarolina. The likelihood of them marrying sisters seems very remote. Bothmen were married with families
long before 1766 and there is nothing to indicate they were ever partners.
Many years of research has failed to produce any documentary evidence toprove that there was a Julius C. Dugger, an Indian Trader on the frontierin 1766. His name does not appear in any record found in Virginia, NorthCarolina or Tennessee, yet Greer can be documented in all three states.
One William Dugger, born 1720/1730, has surfaced as a good prospect to bethe frontier trader, who was misnamed as Julius C. Dugger and his age andlocations fit. He has also been identified and documented in Virginia andNorth Carolina. It seems likely that family tradition just got namesmixed as
they recorded the early Dugger settler."

Marty Grant goes on to say: He (Robert Nave) also wrote other thingsabout William also. I've (Marty Grant) corresponded with Robert T. Naveand he still holds to these views, and I agree with him completely. Heis, in my opinion, one of the premier Dugger researchers around today.

Well, there you go. Mostly I think a pro William Dugger opinion. But, Itoo am inclined to go with the theory that There is a name confusion, andin reality, Julius C. Dugger was indeed either William or BenjaminDugger.(end of Ray's notes)

Chris Sosa, states Lydia was married to Marmaduke Cheatham, this we knowis not true. He gives Marmaduke's birth ca. 1680 Henrico Co. VA. and died1762 Surry Co. VA. This is probably tru since I do recall seeing datagiving this or similar dates/places.

New source saying birth 1726 Surry Co. VA.
Records found. Lydia Dugger is daughter of Daniel & Mary never married.Marmaduke Cheatham, of Surry Co. VA. made his will dated April 30, 1762.He left a cow and a calf to John Dugger, son of Lydia Dugger deceased. Hedoes not state his relationship with John Dugger. It does however imply that he is John's father. Although hecould have been his grandfather - or perhaps he is not related at all andremembered John in his will for other reasons. But the researcher on this feels, after his research that Marmaduke Cheatham isrelated as father.
Lydia Dugger is found in several Surry Co. VA. court records pertainingto bastard children. In May of 1748, Elizabeth Dugger (spelled Duger) andLydia Dugger (spelled Lidda Duger) are both in court for having bastardchildren. They are mentioned on the same record. In June 1749, ElizabethDugger (spelled Dugar) and Lydia Dugger (spelled Ledia Dugar) are bothcalled into court for bastard children. In May of 1751 Lydia Dugger isagain in court for a bastard child. In each case she is charged withBastardy. Unfortunately, the court records do not give the name or sex ofthe child, nor does it name the father.
John's pension application for Revolutionary War service, states that hewas born in 1749 in Surry Co. VA. But he could have been born as early asJanuary and as late as June. Usually a child is a few months old beforethe mother enters court.

From the Demastus web page, an e-mail from Carol E. Valentine Dugger;"Lydia (b. 1729 Surry Co. VA. d. bef. 1772 Surry Co. VA.) is the daughterof Daniel Dugger and is the mother of 3 illegitimate children. The fatherof these 3 children is not known. John is believed to be her second childand I (Carol Dugger) am descended from him. Apparently Lydia, my 4thgreat grandmother, was frowned upon for having those children for thestory goes that she was fined 500 lbs of tobacco or 50 schillings to thechurch every time she had another illegitimate child. Wow, tobacco musthave been worth about 50 schillings, sounds like."

Information on Marmaduke Cheatham for possible use at a later dat. Fatherof Marmaduke Cheatham is Thomas Cheatham of Proctor's Creek, Chester Co.VA. and died in Henrico Co. VA. I have seen on land documents that theCheatham's and Dugger's were at one time neighbors.

William is believed to be 'Julius Caesar' Dugger. William was married 2 -3 times first to Martha, second to Margaret, and Third to Mary - althoughit is pointed out that the second and third wife could be the same personi.e. Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary. Depending on the circumstances, thiscould be very likely. Census records show us this constantly. Williamleft Brunswick Co. VA briefly (from abt 1748/49 to 1750) for LunenburgCo. VA. then returned (back abt 1750) to Brunswick Co. later he moveddown to Granville Co. NC. then back to Lunenburg again in the sectionthat became Pittsylvania Co. VA. From there he went to Surry Co. NC tothe section that later became Wilkes Co., and that is today along theWilkes-Watauga Co. border. This is the area he died in ca 1773.
William's age is being based on his first public record dated in 1741 andthen assuming he was at least twenty-one years of age. He moved to Brunswick Co. VA early in lifefrom Surry Co. VA
In March 1752 we believe William sold his 328 acre patent - see facts -perhaps in preparation for a move he was soon to make. Hawtree Creek istoday in Warren Co. NC, which was then (1752) still part of Granville Co.NC Bute Co. was formed from eastern Granville in 1764 and includedHawthorne Creek, Bute was split into several counties, including Warrenin 1779. However William was long gone from there by then. Some havesuggested that William's son Julius, who was born in 1760, was namedafter neighbor Julius Nochols, who received a land patent adjoiningWilliam on Hawtree Creek in 1756. Haven't checked for additional recordsin Granville, so don't know when he sold his property there. However, beginning in 1762, he began taking out land entries in Pittsylvania Co.VA Sometime after 1768 but before 1771, William Dugger moved back toSurry Co. NC and settled on what is now the border region of Wilkes andWatauga Co.'s There is a Dugger's Mountain and a Dugger's Creek theretoday, which took his name.
