NC 1 Alexander's year of birth is being based on the first public record foundin 1773, assuming he was 21 years of age at that time. On May 24, 1773 several Dugger's were listed on the Tithable list forSaint Andrew Parish, Brunswick Co. VA. The list included AlexanderDugger, James Dugger, John Dugger and John Dugger Sr. Sometime prior to 1774, Alexander Dugger married Ann (maiden nameunknown) in Brunswick Co. VA. There are a few records associatingAlexander with the Proctor family and some researchers have suggested sheis a Proctor. In November 1777, in Brunswick Court, Alexander Dugger was appointedguardian of Mary and Charles Edwards, orphans of Charles Edwards,deseased. James Dugger and Henry Dugger weresecurity for him . On November 22, 1777 a Mr. Proctor sold property to Alexander inBrunswick Co. VA. I do not have details On February 14, 1778 Alexander Dugger and John Dugger Sr. , HowardDugger , and Daniel Dugger , all witnessed a deed betweenFlood Mitchell of Granville Co. NC to John Dugger Jr. . On April 20, 1780 Alexander Dugger witnessed a deed between Proctor andAbernathy. Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1782 and 1783 Personal Property Taxlist in Brunswick Co. VA. and taxed for 1 white . Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1782 Real Property Tax list for 100acres. This would be the land he purchased in 1777 from Mr. Proctor. Alexander was not listed on the 1783 Real Property Tax list. He sold hisproperty, but the deed was dated 1784. In August 1783, in Brunswick Court, Thomas Clements, Executor of BenjaminClements sued Alexander Dugger and Julis Perry. On February 23, 1784 Alexander and Ann Dugger sold 100 acres to GeorgeVaughn. Alexander was not listed on the 1784 Personal or Real Property Tax listsin Brunswick Co. VA. Apparently he moved to Orange Co. NC. in this year,but probably after February. On March 3 1786, Andrew and wife Margaret Patterson of Orange Co. NC sold640 acres to Alexander Dugger also of Orange Co. NC. Witnesses were, JohnGattis and Alexander Gattis. On January 6, 1787, less than one year after purchasing it, Alexandersold his 640 acres in Orange Co. NC to George Johnson. Witnesses wereCharles Johnson and Andrew Patterson. They may have moved back to Brunswick Co. VA. for a little while, but notnecessarily so. Alexander was listed in a couple of court records there,but he didn't have to live there to be named. In March 1788, in Brunswick Co. VA. Court, Thomas Lundie, administratorof Henry Morris, deceased, sued John Dugger and Alexander Dugger fordebt. It is unclear as to which John Dugger it refers to, but it could beAlexander's brother John Dugger, Surry. In May of 1788, in Brunswick Court, Thomas Lundy, administrator of HenryMorris, deceased, sued Joshua Proctor and Alexander Dugger for debt. Thesuit "abates as to Dugger", which I suppose means that Alexander eitherpaid his debt, was forgiven for it in some manner, or something of thatnature.
Alexander was probably on the 1790 census for Orange Co. NC,unfortunately, the 1790 census for that county was lost. Thereconstructed census shows him listed there though. This was supposedlybased on tax lists from the same time frame. On Sept. 19, 1795, Alexander Dugger, Abr. Allen and Willoughby Selfwitnessed a deed between Samuel and Elizabeth Allen to George Johnson,all of Orange Co. NC Alexander and family left Orange Co. NC sometime between 1785 and ca 1800and moved to Greene Co. TN. Alexander was probably on the 1800 census in Greene Co. TN, butunfortunately, the 1800 and 1810 census' for most of TN were lost. He islisted on the 1805 Tax list for Greene Co. TN. and on the 1812 Tax listfor same county, being charged for one white . Between 1812 and 1820 Alexander moved half way across TN to Maury Co. TN.He was listed there on the 1820 census. Some of his family moved with himand others remained in Greene Co. TN On the 1820 Maury Co. TN census,there are several young children with him , most likely these aregrandchildren and not his children. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): It appears that both Alexander and his wife Ann died in the 1820s inMaury Co. TN. I have no information at this time on whether he left awill, nor if there was an estate record. I will also try to locate thecemetery they were buried in.
