Doty, Edward, a very promising and sturdy young man, was probably residing in or near London in 1619, and well acquainted with some of the Merchant Adventurers active in the affairs of the Virginia Company under Sir Edward Snadys. It was the growing custom for the best of families to "apprentice" their sons as soon as possible with some London merchant for a seven year period, and no doubt his family was of good standing. The use of the word "servant" in the early centuries, especially the 16th and 17th should not be taken too seriously. Every individual that was not a member of the "Nobility" or the "Clergy", in order to exist in the country at all, had to exhibit by word and action the appearance of humility. History has proven that much of this apparent humbleness of spirit disclosed by Bradford and other early writers of History, was merely a current form of expression, and that underneath this demanded humility was a seething and militant individualism.

Edward Doty was an apprentice (servant) to Stephen Hopkins, and apprentices could not generally get married until their contract term was up. William Bradford, in his journal of Plymouth Plantation, states in early 1651. "But Edward Doty by a second wife hath seven children, and both he and they are living." "Doty's mysterious first marriage must have occured in Plymouth sometime after he was released from his contract with Hopkins." (Probably occured between 1623 and 1627) Nothing is known about his first marriage, and all his children were by his second marriage which was to Faith Clarke.

Edward came to Plymouth, Mass. on the" MAYFLOWER", landing on 21 Nov. 1620 at the age of 21. He and his cousin Edward Lister came as indentured servants to Stephen Hopkins. Hopkins was a tanner. Both Edward's were distant cousins of Stephen Hopkins. There were 104 passengers on the "Mayflower" that landed @ what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. (51 Men - 22 Boys - 20 Women - 11 Girls) The Wampanoag Indians were living in this area when the earliest Europeans arrived.

He was the fortieth signer of the "Solemn Compact", executed in the cabin of the Mayflower, 11 November, 1620 in Cape Cod Harbor. Edward Doty is recorded as a contentious man, often getting himself in trouble with the law. On 18 Nov 1621 he fought a duel with Edward Leister, which was the Colony's first and only duel. The duel was with daggers, both men were wounded, but neither seriously. Both were subsequently punished by having their heels tied behind their neck, however their punishment was cut short due to their apparent suffering. During his life, Edward would be charged with various crimes, including trespassing, assault and battery, and breaking the peace. In 1632/1633 Edward was found guilty of slander, and fined 50 Shillings. Two years later, March 1633/1634 Edward was fined 9 shillings & 11 pence for drawing blood in a fight with Josiah Cooke. In Jan 1637/1638 he was fined for assaulting George Clarke.
