Hugh de Mortimer, being a person of a proud and turbulent spirit, opposed strenuously the acc ession of King Henry II upon the demise of Stephen, and induced Roger, Earl of Hereford, to f ortify his castles of Gloucester and Hereford against the new monarch, himself doing the sam e with his castles of Cleobury, Wigmore, and Brugges (commonly called Bridgenorth). Whereupo n Gilbert Foliot, at that time Bishop of Hereford, addressing himself to the Earl of Hereford , his kinsman, by fair persuasions soon brought him to peaceable submission. But Mortimer con tinuing obstinate, the king was forced to raise an army and, at the point of the sword, to be ing him to obedience. Between this rude baron and Joceas de Dynant, at that time Lord of Ludl ow, existed a feud, carried to so fierce a pitch that Dynant could not pass safely out of hi s castle for fear of being taken by Mortimer's men, but it so happened that Mortimer, settin g his spies to take all advantages of Dynant, was surprised himself and carried prisoner to L udlow where he was detained until he paid a ransom of 3,000 marks of silver. He was oftentime s engaged against the Welsh and he erected some strong castles in Wales. Hereford, Seigneur of St. Victor-en-Caux in NormandySon an d heir of Roger de Mortemer; warrior at Hastings; father of Ralph de Mortimer. Must have bee n young at the time he attended the Conquest. He possessed at the compilation of Domesday 12 3 manors in addition to the castle of Wigmore in Herefordshire, which was the chief seat of his barony. In 1088 Ralph wa s opposed to William Rufus in favor of Robert Courteheuse, but two years later, being pardone d, he accompanied Robert, count d'Eu, and Walter Giffard to Normandy, where they arrayed them selves agains Duke Robert. In 1100 he founded the priory of Wigmore and in the HISTORY of th e foundation of this priory it is stated that Roger de Mortermer descended from this family , was abt 1200 the second founder. Ralph, by his wife Millicent, had issue, Hugh, who succeed ed him, William, to whom his brother gave Chelmarsh and who was ancestor of the MOrtimers o f Attleborough, and Hawise, who m. Stephen, comte d'Aumale. [A History of Wales, p. 105] The barony of Bec, surnamed Bec-Vauquelin, Bec-de-Mortemer, and Bec-Crispin, belonged success ively to the families named. In 1180 it is certain that the Mortemers were seigniors of Bec . It passed to the Crispin family from them through marriage c. 1254, with the constableshi p of Normandy and other extensive possessions. [Ancestral Roots, Line 136 , p. 120] Ralph de Mortimer, who took his name from the castle of Mortemer-en-Brai in the Pays de Caux , did good service against Edric the Wild under William FitzOsberne. Although he did not acqu ire Wigmore itself from Edric, as is Ralph de Mortimer from Mortemer in Pays de Caux in Normandy. The Castle of St. Victor was th e chief comain in Normandy. He was only son of William (some say Roger) de Mortimer who is sa id to have also contributed 60 vessels to Duke William's invasion flet at the Conquest but wa s probably too old to have attended.
