RE: Gideon Reuben Cooley: My grandfather, George Franklin Wells, used to refer to him as
Old Gideon Reuben, always without the Cooley. That he rarely used his first name I am absolutely
sure, but I still think it was there. Osborn Benjamin Cooley listed it when asked to give his
father's full name on the Genealogical Society Family Survey done in Victory Ward, Emery
County sometime between December 1912 when he returned from Mexico and early 1919 when he went to Blanding to help his plural wife Desky Prows who had stayed there on their was back from Mexico. That is where he died of influenza and is buried there in the Blanding Cemetery.

From history of her brother, Oliver Norton Harmon, Jr:
In 1866, he sent his team back to Missouri to bring emigrants, which brought his sister, Emily, to Utah.
Emily's son, Osborn, went for his mother probably using the team his uncle Oliver Harmon sent to bring Emily to Utah.

Reuben COOLEY1485 was born in 1802 in Fredonia, Chautauqua, New York. He died on 20 September 1846 in McComb(or Hire), McDonough, Illinois. He was buried in Friendship Church, Tennessee, McDonough, Illinois. Info from Ralph Vernon Cooley (2001) racool@qwest.net
"My records show that Reuben Cooley died on 30 Sep 1846 and is buried at the Freindship church in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois. At the time of death, he was still living on his farm which was located approx. 1 mile east of the Friendship church and one mile north of the Tennessee township line. This means to me that he died on his farm in Hire Township, McDonough county, and not in McComb. He purchased his farm on the 1st day of Jan 1844. I would also presume that the youngest son was born in Hire Township and not in Macomb. This would have been Myron Reuben Cooley who was born 25 Sep 1844. I have stood at Reuben Cooley's grave at the Friendship church and viewed his tombstone and it states: "Reuben Cooley died Sep 30, 1846 in the 40th year of his age." So, if this means he had already turned 40 sometime before Sep 30th 1846, or would have turned 40 before the end of 1846, then he would have been born sometime in 1806. Where? Your guess is as good as mine. There is no place in any of the records in Hire or Tennessee townships where he is referred to as anyone other than just Reuben Cooley. Nor was he ever referred to as anyone other than Reuben by his second wife, Emily Harmon, as far as I have been able to find. I have personally viewed her family bible and she writes his name only as "Reuben Cooley". At that time my Aunt Arvela Cooley Conger had the bible. She was the oldest daughter of Myron Osborn Cooley who was the eldest son of Osborn Benjamin Cooley. Emily Harmon's eldest sister, Almira, was married to a Thomas Carr and is listed as having died somewhere in McDonough county, Illinois on 23 Aug 1838. Emily's father died in Nauvoo 18 Aug 1843. So, this may be a tie in as to how Emily became acquainted with Reuben and married him sometime in 1839. If you can add anything to this, please let me know." Ralph Vernon Cooley.

Gideon's parents are Azariah Cooley and Lydia Huntley. [See note below which disputes this!]
From Jeri Martinez in Tuscon, AZ: Legend has it that Emily Harmon was a maid in the home of Gideon Cooley and Laura Snow.
________
Azariah and Lydia Huntley COOLEY. In 1997 I contacted a woman named Karen Foster who lived in Kearns, Utah, because she was a submitter on Azariah Cooley and I was looking for a document for his birth. His father was the town clerk and all of his brothers and sisters were listed in the
Vermont Vital Records Index but he was not. That seemed a little strange since the other cards were very detailed. She didn't have what I wanted, but was interested in how I was a descendant. When I said I came through Gideon Reuben, she said no parents had been found for him but that Azariah was not. I came away thinking "A lot you know!" but when I got home and checked my file, I realized that my grandparents family records was all that I had. When I got the chance to go to Boston for the dedication of the temple in October of 2000, my sister and I took the opportunity to go up to Vermont to get the documentation I needed. In Pittsford, the town clerk
did not have a record for Gideon Reuben but she showed me the original Volume of the Records of Birth and made me a xerox copy of the entry for Azariah -just as detailed as the rest. Armed with that, I went to the probate court in Rutland where I found that his packet contained 35 sets of papers! I was somewhat short on time, so I bit the bullet and paid the $30.00 to have the
entire packet copied. I was confused by all of the Guardianship papers until one of them finally stated that Azariah was insane. There were periodic inventories as the guardian changed and finally, having died intestate, an inventory and distribution of his property following his death
Sept 5, 1852. The document dated 16 June 1853 gives the division of property to his heirs: Lydia Cooley, widow; Reuben Cooley, son (sons Benjamin and Lewis were deceased); grandsons Benjamin, James and Luis. My first thought was "How sad that they never knew that Gideon Reuben had already died in Illinois six years earlier." The surprise was the description of the property given to Reuben including "the house he now occupies!" Alive and well and living in Vermont! That was a hard lesson for me as I had basically taken up where my grandparents left off and did my research back from there - about 10 years worth of time not to mention the
money. I still have a feeling that he has to fit back into that Cooley family somehow but there is still nothing showing up for me in spite of having collected a fair amount of information on the early colonial families. lrice@pacbell.net

_________
jerim@azstarnet.com Jeri sent the following on 9/16/02:
I spent quite a bit of time in July at the Family History Library in Salt Lake researching my ancestor Emily Harmon's first husband Reuben Cooley. I met up with another researcher who has
painstakingly documented every known descendant of Reuben Cooley and his two wives down through the mid 20th century. She is a descendant of Reuben and his first wife Laura Snow.

I did find an account of Reuben Cooley purchasing some items in a general store in New York in 1825 and another patron of the store that same day was named Martin Harmon (could that be Emily's grandfather??).

So we think that we have Reuben's father Luther as a Loyalist who lived in Ontario. He was baptized by Joseph Smith the Prophet in a pool on his farm along with several others on the
Prophet's first missionary journey to Canada in 1833. Unfortunately there are no extant membership records but the incident (not the names) is recorded in the Documentary
History and the names of those baptized were published in a small newspaper in the town of Brant, in Canada! so hopefully we are on the right track. We think Reuben was a member since
his endowments were done by Emily posthumeously but she didn't have him baptized (she must have known he was already a baptized member)
I feel like finally after so many years we may be making progress on identifying Emily's husband Reuben's connections.
