Suffolk, England : Baptisms: "1603 Edward, sonne of John & Mandelen Collins, 25 March". The narratives of persons joining the Cambridge church give informat ion about the life of Edward Collins in England, stating that he was brou ght up by godly parents, that after his father's death he was placed i n a gentleman's house, that afterward he spent a year with old Mr. Roger s of Wethersfield, co. Essex, England; that he was apprenticed in a worth y family, and that later he went to Dedham, county Essex, England. He i s described as "Merchant" and "Gentleman". Pope's "Pioneers of Massachusetts" says that Edward was a proprieto r of Cambridge in 1636, but he probably did not arrive in New England unt il a year or two later. He was a Deacon of the First Church in Cambridg e in 1638, and was admitted a freeman 13 May 1640. He brought with him f rom England wife Martha and several children. John Collins, probably son of John, resided at Bramford, co. Suffolk ; perhaps at Braintree, co. Essex; and also was at London, salter. He pr obably was born about 1550. He died before 20 November 1639, the date o f his son Daniel's will, and perhaps before 6 August 1614, when "Mandlen e Collins", possibly his widow, married William Cozzins . This article notes that Savage called John Collins of Boston MA, sho emaker, brother to Edward Collins. NEHGR 61 calls Edward and John brother s, and traces descendants of both. This author concludes there is no evi dence to call them brothers, and says that John was of a different socia l class. John died in 1670, no age specified; Edward died 1689 aged 86 . The will of Daniel Collins dated 20 Nov 1639 and signed 9 June 1643 me ntions Edward Collins and his children, and the wife of John Russell an d her children, among many other brothers, sisters and cousins, but the o nly reference to a John Collins (who would be living at that date) is b y name alone with no reference to relationship, and among a list of misce llaneous legatees at the end. Daniel identified his mother as Abigail Ro se and called her the third wife of John Collins. She is the first of wh om we have knowledge. This leaves the possibility of two earlier wives a nd a son John by one of them who would be an older half brother to Danie l and Edward -- perhaps John of Boston, although this author discounts th e relationship.
