Elisha was made a deacon of the church and was a very faithful and efficient

From History of Middletown, Vermont by Hon. Barnes Frisbie 1867: "Perhaps no
family has more of the history of Middletown than the Clark families. They
were the most numerous. Ancestors were from England. Three brothers by name
of Clark came to MA colony before 1700. Thomas Clark was one. Thomas had two
sons, Theopholus and Thomas who moved to Connecticut and settled in Old
Canterbury. From Theopholus Clark came the Clarks who have lived in
Middletown; from Thomas came Isaac Clark and the Clark families of Pawlet.
Theopholus Clark had six sons: Nathaniel, Benjamin, Adam, Theopholus, Jonas,
and Stephen. Nathaniel had ten children: seven sons and three dau. Five of
those sons moved from Canterbury to Middletown, VT. They are: Asa, Elisha,
Rufus, Roswell, and Ezra. ... Rufus was here as early as 1786.86. Members of
Congregational Church. Rufus died in East Poultney abt 1837. See Harmon File
0071. He was probably a twin with Roswell.

Ruth Hayward, the wife of David Durkee, came to Monroe, Ashtabula, OH from VT
in 1818. She saw peaches growing for the first time in Erie, PA and secured a
quantity of stones which had been thrown to the pigs. She planted an orchard
at her new home from which her descendants long gathered fruit. She taught
school the next year and Rufus Clark, future Yale graduate and preacher, was
one of her pupils. Pioneer Women of Western Reserve Vol 1 pg 91

David Clark and his family of four sons and two daughters accompanied the
Spaffords from Dorset, Vermont. His wife was Margaret Branch. She was 31 when
she became a resident of Cleveland. (1800) Daughter's Margaret (md. Elisha
Norton), Lucy (Md. Seth Doan). The Clark Sons: Rufus, Mason, Martin, and
Jarvis--all settled in western states in later years.

In Elizabethtown, Essex, NY
there is a Stafford Family that looks like they are related. Thomas 56;
Keziah 45; Norman 22; Harman 20; Mary 24; Lucy 18; Cyrus 16; Cordelia 13;
Arvetta 10; Almon 7; and Franklin 4.

The above David Clark appears to be too old to be a son of Rufus and Zelpha.
Perhaps he is one of Rufus' unnamed brothers.

1850 Census of Tompkins County, NY page 33 is Zilpha Clark age 40 with a 4
year old Ellen and 14 year old Eleazor. Living next to David Clark 74--farmer
b. CT--A Parson.
Also with David Clark is another David Clark age 32; Leaverett 30,
Eliza 29; Benjamin 7; Theodore 5.

Pioneer Women of W.R. pg 744-745 Leverett Clark married Amy Warner from
Watertown, CT. Leaverett purchased 100 acres of land south of the public
square of Twinsburg, Lorain, Ohio. They had nine children. Some of the
children are: a daughter, Phila, who married Jonathan Herrick, Mrs. Lewis Alling
in Akron Ohio; Mabel who married Nelson Hinketon.

History of Lorain County, Ohio pg. 1133-34
Thompson Clark b. 7 Apr 1822 in Avon. Son of Samuel and Polly (Seward) Clark.
Grandson of Gaylord Clark, a native of CT who removed to Addison, VT where he
died. Is Gaylord a son of Rufus and Esther? See Harmon file for article which
gives a lot of genealogical information. Siblings of Thompson Clark are:
Samuel, died in Lorain Co, OH at age of 32; Lyman who died 14 Sep 1876 in
Steuben Co, IN; Daniel who md and moved to IN and d. 1889; Clarissa, Mrs. Amos
Moon who died in Avon; Anna who md Justus Butler and d. IN 1885; Orilla who md
David H. Barnard of Ridgeville and d in Olmsted, OH in 1885; and Naomi who md
Wilkes Rathbun and d. 1885. Thompson Clark one of first six families who
settled Avon township. (This is where some of Harmons settled.) William
Seward, an uncle, was soldier in War of 1812.

The History of Middletown says Rufus died in East Poultney about 1837. This
would fit well with what we know of our family. Another Rufus Clark died on 20
Mar 1848 at Castleton, Rutland, VT. If the Castleton man turns out to be ours,
then all the genealogy on this family will need to be readjusted as I have used
the genealogy of the Poultney family as that is where some of our Harmons were.
Also buried in Castleton were other Clarks; namely: Heman and Mahala; Bildad;
Polly; Roswell; and Hannah.

There is a Samuel McClelland who served in the War with Martin Harmon, Vaughns,
etc. There is also a Samuel McClellan in Erie county Pennsylvania who
witnesses a will of John W. Clark with his son William McClellan. I feel this
family is that family. The d at the end of the name is there sometimes and
dropped sometimes on the same people.
1800 Census in Lancaster, PA pg. 14 11101-31101
James McClelland was executor of will of William Francis in Erie Co., PA
I believe the following William McLellan to be the son of Samuel:
William McLellan (will recorded 29 Jan 1869 of Washington, Erie, PA
wife: Elizabeth
ch: Davis, Charles, Marvin, Cilpher, Ceonith, Aurilla, William, Lewis, Harmon.

The second Mary, daughter of Jael and John Harmon is listed on pg. 175 in
Artemus Harmon's book and it says her husband is Samuel McClellan and that he
was a physician. This Mary died in 1800, at the age of 30 with four children.
It is possible that he also married Mary, daughter of Nehemiah and Abigail.
Samuel, the husband of Mary the dau of Jael and John, lived to be 89 years old.
I believe they are the same man.

Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve pg 233:
In the year 1812 the report was circulated that the British were coming and
Thomas Rice, an early settler of Stow, Summit, Ohio, rode down from Cleveland
on horseback, hatless, hair streaming in the wind warning all to flee to
Ravenna. The family of William McClelland, then living north of Stow Corners
was among those warned of danger. Mrs. Abiah McClelland hastily packed all of
her dishes in a brass kettle they had brought from Middletown, Ct; packing bran
betwen the dishes. This kettle was hidden under a small stack of hay and the
family hurriedly left. When they learned the report was false the families
returned and during their absence cattle had found the hay stack, then scenting
the bran they of course, devoured it, and Mrs. McClelland's china dishes were
destroyed.

pg. 387: Eliza Griffeth md. Robert McClelland; they came from Avon, NY to
Liberty towhsnip Ohio; later to Youngstown and opened a school in 1826. Eliza
lost her husband and returned to NY until her mother died. Then she returned
to Youngstown, Ohio.

pg 393: A Rebecca McClelland (maiden name Stewart) lived in Youngstown, Ohio.
Had children: Rebecca; Mary Adeline; Lucinda; Lydia; Caroline E.

I wonder if I found another of Rufus' sons: Could Calvin Clark who was in The
Records of the First Presbyterian Church at Worcester, Otsego, NY be a son of
Rufus. See EARLY SETTLERS OF NY STATE BY JANET WETHY FOLEY:
(listed first are parents; then children; then baptismal date:
Clark, Calvin and Frances---John, Diantha, Mary, Zebrina D., Barnabas F. 1838)

My reasoning for above suspicion is that Calvin and Diantha are definately
names carried on in our known relatives. They are both fairly unusual names
and more especially Diantha. SEARCH MORE ON THIS FAMILY!!!!!

POSSIBILITY: Wellsville, Erie, PA: Is this Rufus Clark in PA, a descendant of Rufus and Zelpha?
The free-Will Baptist congregation, the largest in the town, was organized on the 5th of May, 1839, Rev. Willard Stickney, of Washington Township, being the first pastor, and Asa Litchfield, clerk. Its later pastors have been Revs. Frank Wells, David Winton, Chauncey Joslin, E. R. Anderson, Rufus Clark, J. B. Page and Rev. Boynton, the present incumbent. Julius Wells and John W. Prescott were the first and only Deacons. The congregation has a commodious building, surmounted by a steeple and bell tower with a fine bell. A Sabbath school was established over thirty years ago, and has been in continuous operation. The membership of the church in about forty.

In 1801, a roll of freemen of Middletown: Rufus Clark, Enos Clark, Theophilus Clark, Jonas Clark, Ezra Clark.

1810 Senaca County New York (This could be a son,
notice the H.) Rufus H. Clark p. 161 00100-20100 (A young family)

1810 Poultney, Rutland, VT Rufus Clark 2,1,1,-1; 1,2,--1.* probably ours!
Rutland, Rutland, VT Rufus Clark 2-1--; --1-- (Young family)
next to Cephas Clark

1820 Rufus Clark pg. 246 Poultney, Rutland, VT and pg and pg. 219 Rutland,
Rutland, VT. I have not read this census.

1830 Rufus Clark in Poultney, Rutland, VT pg 53 and Rutland, Rutland, VT pg.
166. I have not read this census.

1 Apr 1790 in Massachusetts Rufus enlisted in MA line as a Private.

1801 Freeman Roll of Middletown, Rutland, Vt was Rufus Clark; Theophilus;
Jonas; Ezra; and Enos.

Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve Vol 2 pg. 811-812

In Elizabethtown, Essex, NY
there is a Stafford Family that looks like they are related. Thomas 56;
Keziah 45; Norman 22; Harman 20; Mary 24; Lucy 18; Cyrus 16; Cordelia 13;

Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve Vol 1 pg 225: Nathaniel Clark (his wife,
Marilla Wait was born 1805 in Cazanovia, NY) and his brother-in-law, Asa Wait
built the first grist mill in the town of Trumbull, Ashtabula, Ohio in 1834.
Emily Johnson and John Clark were married in the Catskill Mountains in Greene
county, NY in 1832 removing to Ashtabula Co in 1839.

pg. 168 Abigail Clark, second wife of Col. E. N. House was born in Bloomington,
CT. She wrote a memoir of her life and at her request it was published after
her decease in 1861. Lived in Lenox, Ashtabula, Ohio.

Also buried in Castleton were other Clarks; namely: Heman and Mahala; Bildad;
