Her parents joined the Church and sold their possessions to be with the saints. Four of her eight siblings died during the privations of the trek west. She walked most of the distance from Nauvoo to the Salt Lake Valley. She married Levi Nehemiah Harmon. Called to the Cotton mission in southwestern Utha, they lived in their wagon box for a season since there was no shelter. The heat was merciless, the soil had to be forced to yield a crop. JOHN CHILD, third son and child, as it appears, of William Child was born after his parents removal to America, in 1636, in Watertown, Mass.; m.1st, Mary -----; m. 2d, May 29, 1668, Mary Warren, who was b. Nov. 29,1651, and was a granddaughter of John Warren, who came to America in The"Arabella" with Governor Winthrop, in 1630. As it has been deemedprobable from certain circumstantial evidence that Ephraim Child, ofWatertown, came to New England with Gov. Winthrop;it is also presumable that William accompanied his brother. Mr. Warren, the grandfather of Mrs.M.W. Child, was one of the selectmen of Watertown, and a prominent citizen, though some amusing entries found in the town records, whichwere also church records, would indicate the source whence some of hisdescendantshave drawn their independence of character, and departure from the early established orthodox views. First, we find "John Warren fined,Oct. 1651, twenty shillings for an offence against the laws of baptism" ;second "John Warren fined,April 4, 1654, for neglect of public worship, fourteen Sabbaths, at five shilling seach, total 3 pound, 10 shillings."Absenting oneself from church in thosedaysa somewhat expensive luxury. The Warren family was most creditably and prominently known in thecolonial and state history of Massachusetts, notwithstanding the eccentricities of their ancestor. Mr. John Child took a prominent part in the affairs of town and colony, and was chosen representative to the General Court of Massachusetts. He become the head of a large line ofposterity, who have honored the name. By the nuncupative will, witnessed by his brother Richard and two others, he left to his eldest son, John his "dwelling house with its lot of twelve acres, also some meadow lands."and " the reversion of all lands upon the little plains." His youngest son, Daniel, received his farm lands. Mr Child died Oct. 15, 1676, ae.40. Mrs. Child remarried; and d. May 12, 1734, ae. 83. Parents: . Spouse: Mary WARREN. JOHN CHILD, eldest son of John Child, and eldest child of John and MaryWarren Child, b. in Watertown, Mass., April 25, 1669, m. Oct. 5, 1693, Hannah French, dau. of Capt William French, who was the firstrepresentative of the town of Billerica, Mass., to the General Court in1666.
