William CARPENTER was born about 1520 in of, Nettlecombe, Somerset, England. He has Ancestral File Number 9P2X-G7. Boston Transcript, April 1, 1931, #1349: Alexander Carpenter was the son of
William Carpenter, born 1520, England. Date of the death of William is given
as 1550, but is obviously incorrect, for Alexander was second of four sons,
James, Alexander, William and Richard. William son of William (born 1520), is
the founder of the American line of Carpenters. He was a brother to Alexander,
whose daughters came here, also. The history of Alexander is in the English
records, not the American.
All these Carpenters were descendants of John Carpenter, 1303; he is the first
ancestor who can be traced; he was a member of Parliament in 1323. John, a
grandson of the first John, was town clerk of London for twenty-one years from
April 20, 1417, in the reign of Henry V. This John established a school in
1438 (?), the City of London School, which was still in existence in the last
decade of the 19th century, at the least. From this line came the English and
American Carpenters; the English line became extinct in 1853.
It is interesting to note that John, town clerk of London, was an executor of
the will of Richard Whittington, Lord Mayor of London whose story is so
familiar.
The details in this letter were found in " A Genealogical History of the
Carpenter Family in America," by Amos B. Carpenter, published at Amherst,
Mass., 1898. The same fundamental facts are found in the history of Alice
Carpenter, my ancestor on both sides of my family. Some of them were used to
show descent through Mayflower ancestors, which later ancestry is accepted by
the Mayflower Society. Parents: William or John CARPENTER and Abigail CARPENTER.

Notes for ANN CARR:

Ann was the youngest daugerter of George and Elizabeth Carr of Salisbury.

Mrs. Thomas Putnam took a prominent part in witchcraft delusion of 1692. She was the siste r of Mary Carr, wife of Mr. James Bayley, whose ministry at the village was the cause of so m uch dissension and which indirectly added to the bitterness of the witchcraft persecutions.

By nature, Mrs. Putnam was a woman of a high sensitive temperament, apparently easily wrough t upon and deceived. The Carrs seem all to have been rather weak in that respect, although o f good social position.

Afterwards, at the trails of the accused persons, Mrs. Putnam was often seized with strange a ttacks of imagination, evidently produced by the over-excitement and consequent strain on he r brain. At these times she was a prominent witness, but after this was over and Rev. Parri s was attempting to retain his hold on the parish and to dicker with the inhabitants over ter ms of settlement, she seems to have refused to him her aid of encouragement.

She probably was a firm believer in the whole matter there seems to be but little doubt. Th e strain was to much for Sergeant Putnam and died shortly afters the trails; she followed hi m to the grave a few weeks later.

With the exception of Deliverance, all of the "named" children were alive in 1715. (See An n Putnam's will.)
