Alice CARPENTER was born about 1590 in Wrington, Somerset, England. She was christened on 3 August 1590 in Wrington, Somerset, England. She died on 27 March 1670 at the age of 80 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Mass.. Alice was buried on 29 March 1670 in Plymouth, Mass.. She has reference number 4861. She came to America on the ship 'Anne' in 1623.

The Mayflower, Kate Caffrey, 1974, page 184: West (Captain of the ship
Plantation who landed at Plymouth Colony in 1623) presented himself at Plymouth
as admiral of New England, and said he could sell the Pilgrims two hogsheads of
peas at nine pounds each. This seemed extortionate: so he reduced the cost to
eight. At the same time he wanted to buy beaver "at an under rate." The
Pilgrims refused saying that "they had lived so long without, and would do
still, rather than give so unreasonably."
West told them that he had spoken a ship at sea, coming to Plymouth with
passengers: and they marvelled she was not arrived, fearing some miscarriage;
for they lost her in a storm that fell shortly after they had been aboard.
Which relation filled them full of fear, yet mixed with hope.
The ship was the Anne, one hundred and forty tons, commanded by Captain
William Peirce, perhaps a connection ont the unscrupulous John, and one of the
most highly esteemed of Atlantic master
The Anne had sailed in company with the forty-four-ton Little James, but
they had parted company in the storm. The Anne came in about two weeks after
the disgruntled West had taken the Plantation on to Virginia, and the Little
James staggered in ten days after that, a fine new ship destined to stay in
the, but shaken by the crossing. Between them they brought eighty-seven
settlers, twenty-nine of them from Leyden, including Mary and Sarah Priest,
Mrs. Samuel Fuller, Fear and Patience Brewster, Thomas Morton, Jr., with his
uncle and aunt, George and Juliana Carpenter Morton, Sarah Allerton Vincent
Priest with her third husband Cuthbert Godbertson, an Leyden hatmaker, and
Alice Carpenter Southworth with her sons Constant, aged eight, and Thomas, aged
six. There was also a girl called Barbara, who married Miles Standish.
According to some historians she was the sister of Rose Standish, and if so it
meant that Standish was entirely unconcerned with the Table of Kindred and
Affinity and the taboo against marrying one's deceased wife's sister or
husband's brother, which had provided the shock content of Hamlet twenty-one
years before. Many marriages resulted from the new influx of planters, but the
best known is that of Alice Southworth, who on August 14 became the second wife
of William Bradford.
Page 186: All the newcomers were appalled by what they saw in Plymouth.
Some reacted with tears, others wished they had never come and were back in
England, all were distressed to see the state their friends were in.
And truly it was no marvel they should be thus afftected, for they were in
a very low condition; many were ragged in apparel and some little better than
half naked, though some that were well stored before were well enough in this
regard. But for food they were all alike, save some that had got a few peas of
the ship that was last here. The best dish they could present their friends
with was a lobster or a piece of fish without bread or anything else but a cup
of fair spring water. And the long continuance of this diet, and their labours
abroad, had something abated the freshness of their former complexion.

!The Boston Transcript, September 2, 1931, #8317: Nathaniel Morton mentioned
above, newphew of Mrs Alice (Carpenter) Southworth Bradford, wrote a memorial
poem in her honor. He states that she died March 27 1670, and "To about
fourscore years she did attaine," showing that she was born a little later than
1590, about the time that Edward Southwroth of Samlesbury was born. The poem
in speaking of her first husband says:
I mean good Edward Southworth, who not long
Continued in this world the saints among,
With him she lived seven years a wife,
Till death did put a period to his life.
This proves that Edward Southworth, husband of Alice, married in 1613, died
young in 1620. Edward Southworth of Samlesbury Hall, Lancashire, died young
before 1622, so this is another identification. Parents: Alexander CARPENTER and Mrs. Priscilla (Druscilla) CARPENTER.
