Barbara DUNN was identified as one of seven children of John and Susannah (KETCHAM/WILSON?) CALLARMAN to sign an indenture made September 10, 1827, selling the family land in Fleming County, Kentucky, to James CHRISMAN.
Identity of the parents of William and Elijah DUNN came from Joan MAUER, Almont, Michigan, quoting the DUNN Data Base.
This marriage is shown in Fleming County Marriage Book 00, Page 17. Uriah "CALLERMAN" made bond. Fleming County record called her "Barbary CALLERMAN."
William DUNN and his wife, Barbara (CALLARMAN) DUNN, moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1829, and William died shortly thereafter, according to John Carroll POWER's "History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois," published in 1876. Where POWER is very helpful with other CALLARMANs in Sangamon County, all he says of Barbara is this:
"DUNN, WILLIAM, an older brother to Elijah, was born in Fleming county, Ky., married there to Barbara CALLERMAN, had five children, and moved to Sangamon county in 1829. Mr. DUNN died soon after, and a few years later, his widow and children moved to Henry county, Ill."
Subsequent census records indicating the ages of William and Barbara's children would place William's death in late 1830 at the earliest, assuming a posthumous birth for their last child.
Barbara DUNN is shown as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Sangamon County, and as the head of a household in Stark County, Illinois, in the 1850 census. In that household are three children, Thomas, 23, born in Kentucky; Susannah, 21, born in Illinois; and William, 19, born in Illinois. Adjacent to Barbara's property, James DUNN is listed with his wife, Patsey. He is 27 and born in Kentucky.
The 1860 census of Stark County, which, by the way, is adjacent to Henry County, shows Barbara DUNN living in a household headed by John HARMON, whose wife's name is Margaret. Sangamon County marriage records show John HARMON marrying Margaret A. DUNN on October 14, 1841.
In July 1992, compiler visited Barbara DUNN's grave in Snareville Cemetery, Stark County, Illinois. The tombstone identified her as "Barbary DUNN," a spelling that showed up on the marriage book in Fleming County, Kentucky. It said she died December 15, 1861, age 62 years. The stone identifies her as wife of William DUNN. (Compiler has misplaced the 1850 and 1860 census records showing her age on those dates, so at this immediate writing cannot specify why the circa 1794 date has been established.)
Between 1850 and 1860, these were the only DUNNs in Stark County, and based upon census records and early Stark County marriage records, plus the biographical sketch of Benjamin A. NEWTON, which named the children of William and Barbara (CALERMAN) DUNN, in the "Settlement and Progress of Stark County, Illinois," by M.A. LEESON, M.A. LEESON & Co., Chicago, 1887, the compiler was able to come up with a reasonably complete family.
For a time, compiler connected the 1849 marriage of William E. DUNN and Angelina WYCKOFF with our family, since no other DUNNs were found in the 1850 Stark County census. But LEESON's history shows S.G. WRIGHT, minister of the gospel, who was associated with the Congregational Church in Toulon, Toulon Township, Stark County, performed the 1849 wedding. JACOB E. JONES, justice of the peace, who was in Osceola Township, performed the 1855 wedding. (HARMON family land was located on either side of the Penn/Osceola Township line.) LEESON also indicates Rebecca (MOORE) DUNN, a pioneer of West Jersey Township, who moved to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, in 1847, had a son, William E. DUNN. Another of Rebecca's sons, Richard C. DUNN, succeeded Rev. S.G. WRIGHT as pastor of the Congregational Church in Toulon. This DUNN family had roots in Georgia. The Rev. Richard C. DUNN was studying at Knox College, Galesburg, in 1847, then at a theological seminary and did not return to Stark County until 1855, explaining this family's disappearance from the 1850 Stark census.
Jacob E. JONES also married Susannah DUNN and Benjamin A. NEWTON. James H. DUNN's marriage to Patsey STURM was performed a decade earlier by Lewis AUSTIN, justice of the peace. The townships were not established in Stark County until 1853, and, at least via LEESON, we are not able to place AUSTIN geographically.
John B. FAST, minister of the gospel, performed the marriage of Thomas DUNN to Henrietta GEER. The compiler has not yet found the Rev. FAST geographically.
A paragraph by LEESON on the Methodist Episcopal Church, Penn Township, indicated Barbara DUNN was a member of the church class that met at WALL's schoolhouse, Penn Township, in 1851-52.
