This is a letter written by Harriet Harmon to her sister, Elvira. Mentions several relatives.
May 15, 1887
Dear Sister,
It has been some time since I received your most welcome letter. I have been waiting for one from
Uncle Benjamin. I wrote to him three weeks ago and have not got an answer yet. The first letter I
directed to Bethel, Branch Co. but as his dated at Batavia and mailed there, I sent mine to Batavia.
Yesterday, I sent one to Bethel. I feel very anxious to and want to know about Aunt Sallys and
Aunt Lucena’s children. I wrote to him asking if Calvin Carr was living and what his post office
address was. Oh, I do so want to hear from them if I knew where any of Aunt Polly Gott’s or Aunt
Olive Young’s children were, I would write. I do not know what town in Vermont Uncle
Burlingame’s folks lived.

Don’t you remember father’s finding a cousin of his once when he was at Sandusky city after fish.
It was when we lived at Mansfield by the name of John McNutt. The way he found him he was
there and someone called him McNutt. Father went to him and told him he had an Aunt Abigail
Harmon that married a man by the name of McNutt. He told father she was his mother and lived
with him. Father went home with him to see his Aunt. She was an old lady—almost 80. Then
Father and Mother went there a visiting it was in the summer of 1830. In the year of 1833, Aunt

I will try to finish my letter. Yesterday Gilberts folks came home and Mr. And Mrs. MacCumber
was here a week ago. Dolly’s folks was at home. We are having very dry hot weather here. It does
not appear as though there can anything grow. Bert is fitting his corn ground he wants to plant
tomorrow. It does not look now as though we should have any wheat or grass or anything to live
on as it is so hot and dry. I am afraid fruit will all blast. We could not half clean as we wanted to
for the want of soft water.

Chester is about as he has been. I feel better than when I wrote before. I have been taking Pierces
favorite prescription. Lucy health is very poor. She has to work so hard. I am afraid Berts health
will fail. He has to work so hard and must be up so much nights.

I have wrote a record for Fayette andd will write one and send to Horace. My sheet is full. I shall
have to stop. Harriet.

There are three other Gott families in Pittsfield: James, 60; David, 46 ; and Charles. 24.

After finding out who Olive probably is, I noticed that Olive has a sister named Polly. I have no
information as to Polly’s spouse, but it could easily be Gott. This Polly would be a cousin to
Horatio and niece of Selah. If Horatio has a sister, Olive, I do not have her in my data base.
However, there is an Olive Burlingame who married a Stephen Young. This is a good possibility as in
the next sentence of the letter after mentioning Olive, Harriet soon mentions an Uncle Burlingame and
that would be Olive’s father. She would have been a cousin to Horatio and a niece of Selah.

She was an old lady-almost 80. Then
Father and Mother went there a visiting it was in the summer of 1830. In the year of 1833, Aunt
Clark moved from Vermont to Ohio. She went to visit her.

Monday 16th

Harriet.

I came across your posting on World Connect and wanted to thank you for listing the children and the first wife of Mr. William Burlingame. I appreciated the citation from the Lorain County history. I have been researching his second wife, Lorinda Moore Brainard.

This is what I know about her:
Lorinda Moore was born about 1830 in OH and died August 1902. She married Conant Eden Brainard on October 22, 1849 in Ashtabula, son of David Brainard and Hannah Dodge. He did on April 15, 1862 as a Civil War casualty in Martinsburg, WV. They had the following children:
Erastus Moore Brainard (he married for his second wife Martha Burlingame)
Orris e. Brainard
Chester Brainard
Newell Conant Brainard

Lorinda married William Burlingame on September 12, 1870 in Ashtabula
County.

They had one daughter: Armina Burlingame, born about 1872.

Erastus Brainard married Isadore Brooks on August 22, 1869 in Lake County
OH. she died on June 27, 1881; they had the following children:

Ivah Brainard
Hiram C. Brainard
Libbie E. Brainard

He married Martha M. Burlingame on December 28, 1882 in Lake County OH
They had the following children:
Eva M. Brainard
Hattie E. Brainard
Sadie M. Brainard

Sarah Burlingame, daughter of William and Melissa married a William Smith
Eunice Burlingame married Daniel Ball
Maria Burlingame married Harry Packham
Lucy Burlingame married Briggs M. Shaw abt 1873

I found Lucy and Briggs in the 1880 OH Census and the 1900 Census; she was a widow in the 1920 census and Briggs died May 19, 1915 in Ashtabula County.

Maria and Harry Packham were in the 1880 IL Census Cook county Lake View.

William and Lorinda are in the 1880 OH Census Ashtabula County

Thomas C. Burlingame and Eva Bemis are in the 1880 Census and the 1900
Census

I hope this helps with your research! My connection to this family is
through Lorinda and Conant's son Chester. His daughter, Lorinda, married
my
greatgrandfather's brother.
