Alexander BRYAN^{487,1087,1088,1089,1090} was christened on 23 September 1602 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England.¹⁰⁹¹ He died on 20 November 1679 in Milford, New Haven County, CT.¹⁰⁹² Mentioned in will of father Thomas Bryan in 1611.
Alexander was the son of Thomas Bryant of Aylesbury. Alexander an d his wife were mong the first settlers in Milford CT in 1639. He was we ll educated and a man of influence in the Colony of New Haven, and afte r the union with Connecticut was Assistant 1668-1673. He was a merchant , and a large landowner. As early as 1640 he sent a vessel to Boston car rying beaver and other precious furs, and in return bought such goods a s were needed in Milford. Abbott tells that his credit was so good tha t his notes were passed as currency in Boston.
In 1663, he and his son Richard sold the property in Wendover to Edw ard Baldwin5, son of Henry4, son of Richard3 .
In 1669 he was at Milford: "A List of the Freemen of Milford [Octobe r 1669] ... Mr. Alexander Bryant".
In 1675 Alexander and his son Richard, also a merchant, with Willia m East, owned two brigs and sloops with which they carried on trade to th e West Indies and Boston. Another source mentions that Miles Merwin, Wil liam East and Alexander Bryan were joint owners of one sloop and two brig s. The sloop was kept in the coastal trade with Boston; the brigs made v oyages to the West Indies taken as cargo, staves, horses, cattle, beef, p ork and corn meal, and returning with rum, molasses and European goods.
Alexander died between 20 July and 6 Nov 1679, "at great age". Hi s will is dated 24 April 1678, and names son Richard, grandchild Alexande r and his son Alexander; great grandchild John and Mary Maltby, grandchil d Samuel Bryan; grandchild Sarah who became wife of Samuel Fitch, son o f his own wife; grandchild Hannah Harriman and her three children, and ne phew Thomas Oviatt.
