!BIOGRAPHICAL: Rev. John C. Brooke, born June 3, 1792 at Williamsport, Maryland, and when four, his parents moved to Rockbridge Co., Virginia. Joined the methodist church in 1808 at the home of Daniel Lambert under the preaching of Rev. John Swartzwelder and Jacob Gruber. Preached his first sermon in 1809 at Ebenezer Chapel, Rockbridge Co. In 1817, moved to Cillicothe and worked as a brickmason. That fall he was sent with Rev. John Sale to Union Circuit, a territory little less that 1,000 miles in circuit traveled sometimes on horseback, sometimes on foot over Indian trails. In the fall of 1819, married Eliza H. Finley, only d/o Rev. James B. Finely. In August 1824, with his family, went as a missionary to the Wyandot Indians until worn out with the work, he was compelled in 1826 to ask for other work, and was assigned the Oxford circuit in 1827. He located then in Warren Co. where with Judge McLean he organized one of the first Sabbath Schools in the West. He farmed during the week and preached on Sundays till 1838 when for a short time he went into the mercantile business at Germantown, (Ohio). Being unsuited for this, he moved to a farm till 1846 when he moved east of Eaton. He remained here until three years ago when he lost his wife and the two youngest of his sons, then he moved to Eaton. He reared 11 children to adulthood. Died October 25, 1866. Son, John Brooke Jr. Buried Mound Hill.
