Surnames present never-ending work

The Norman Transcript

Genealogists always are faced with the problem of identifying maiden names of the women in their lineage. We usually depend on marriage records to provide this much-sought-after surname.?

Can we always depend on this source? One of my so-called brick walls is, "was Martha's surname Braden or Helmsutter?

Martha A. Braden married William Albert Hatt Jan. 5, 1871, in Parke County, Ind. Their only child was Ida Jane Hatt, my great-grandmother.?

On the marriage record Martha's surname is listed Braden, but the many hours spent searching for her family has proven to be unsuccessful, or at least not supported by the necessary proofs.?

Martha first was found on the 1870 Parke County, Ind., Census, living in the household of William and Ella Marshall with their daughter, Lavina.?

Ellen and Martha both were 20 years old, and Martha is listed with the surname Braden. She died June 9, 1875, and is buried in the Rush Creek Cemetery in Parke County.?

Her birth date was May 4, 1850, and she is listed on the cemetery transcription as the d/o (daughter of) Wm. Hatt.?That has been misread as it should be w/o (wife/of) Wm. Hatt.

Ellen Marshall also is buried in the Rush Creek Cemetery under the name of Sophronia Marshall who died Dec. 31, 1886, (should have been 1880) at the age of 30 years, 7 months and 27 days.?

With the death date being 1880, her birth date would have been May 4, 1850. Ellen Braden married William Marshall Aug. 23, 1868, in Parke County, Ind. William Marshall and several of their children also are buried in the Rush Creek Cemetery.

While searching for the family of Martha Braden on the 1850 census, I found the family of James Breeden in Orange County, Ind.?

In this family is Frances Holmsutter with her children, Henry, Elizabeth and twin daughters Martha and Sophronia, who are listed as being?2 and a half years old.?

The census was taken in October, but the official census date would have been June 1, 1850, regardless as to when the census was taken, which means that the twins' birth date could have been April rather than May or the person giving the information was not correct in their computation of their age.

Other researchers list James Breeden and Mary Frances Breeden as the children of Henry and Mary Ann Davis Breeden, so we find Frances in her brother's household.

James' wife had died, so Frances could have been keeping house for the family. Her husband, Christian Holmsutter, was living in another household and did not have an occupation listed.

On the 1860 Orange County, Ind., Census, Frances Breeden is living in the household of Henry and Caroline Hammond. Her daughter, Elizabeth Helmstetter, is living in the home of Abraham and Elizabeth Bixler. Sophona Hullumstellar is living in the home of Gary and Eliza J. Matthews.

All three are living in the town of Paoli. Henry and Martha Braden are living in the home of their grandmother, Mary Ann Davis Breeden Moore, in French Lick, Orange County, Ind.?

On the 1880 Liberty Township, Parke County, Ind., in the household of William and Sophronia Marshall is Mary Bradain, listed as the mother-in-law of William.?

Sophronia died by the 1900 census and Mary Bradain (Breeden, Braden) has not been found on that census. The oldest daughter of Sophronia, Lavina Marshall, died Aug. 13, 1887, at the age of 18 years and 24 days.?

There was another daughter born to Sophronia and William, Lillian Marshall, 8 years of age, on the 1880 census. Lillian Isabell Marshall married Melvin K. Brown March 21, 1900.?

Melvin Brown died in 1925 and he and L. Isabelle Brown are buried in the Rush Creek Cemetery. Isabelle died Nov. 27, 1955.

Future research will be the request for the death certificate for Isabelle Brown from the state of Indiana. Hopefully the death certificate will list her mother as Sophronia Ellen Braden or Helmsutter.?

That probably will be the closest I can come to learning the true surname of my great-great-grandmother, Martha A. Braden (Helmsutter) Hatt. Why they decided to use the name of Braden is not known and may never be understood.?
