has it that three of the children were given over to the GUDGELs (Andrew
and Barbary) to raise. They were Mary, Nancy, and John (ages 12, 10 and 8);
three younger boys, Joseph Jr., Gabriel and Daniel (twins) were bound out
and taken to Virginia. The boys were unhappy and ran away back to
Pennsylvania and were also taken in by the GUDGELs. At the time Joseph's
wife died the family was living in Chester Co., PA. That makes six
Woodfill children raised by Gudgels.

When Nancy Woodfield was 16 she married James DENBO. The GUDGELs asked
James DENBO to accompany them on a trip to southwestern Pennsylvania. I
think that would have been 1769. Several families moved to what is now
Fayette Co. The GUDGELs property was called Peaceable.

According to research by Chester F. Brenton (microfilm of his paper in LDS
library, under Woodfield), Joseph Woodfield/Woodfill, Jr. married Catharine
Gudshall (who was born 1 Mar 1760 prob. in Chester) in Luzerne twp, Fayette
Co., PA on 20 Oct 1777. The twins, Daniel and Gabriel Woodfill, were born 9
Jan 1758 in Chester. Daniel married Elizabeth Gudschall (who was born 23
Apr 1763) on 1 Nov 1779 and Gabriel married Susanna Gudschall (who was born
23 Apr 1759 prob. in Philadelphia) on 24 Oct 1777 in Washington Co., PA.
Mr. Brenton does not have any references or documentation for this
information. He said that he got most of his information about the
Gudshalls and Peaceable from material in the Pittsburgh library in a big
book about the history of Monongahela Valley and Washington Co. He doesn't
remember the name of the book.

There is a photocopy of a newspaper article in Mr. Brenton's paper (no date
or title given) about the DAR placing a plaque on Joseph Woodfill, Jr.'s
grave (he remained in PA and died in Uniontown). The article said that in
1769-1770 a number of families traveled together and arrived on the banks
of the Monongahela River . . . . Among these settlers there were such
names as Brown, Crawford, Denbo, Godshall, Woodfill, Hawkins and several
others. I noticed on a map that Linda Finnell sent me of the Gudgel land
in Peaceable that Josiah Crawford was Andrew Gudgel's neighbor and John
Crawford lived further south toward the bottom of the map. We should try
to find out where these families appear together before 1769-70. Were they
in Chester Co., Philadelphia, Bucks Co.?

Something else mentioned in the newspaper article about the DAR plaque is
that the area of the Monongahela River, where the families settled in
Redstone County, was claimed by three states, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and
Maryland, and that each state made land grants. Dianne, you have wondered
about some Gudgels being born in Maryland. Could it be that it was the
same area which is now Pennsylvania but claimed at the time by Maryland?
The article goes on to say something about where the families settled in
Redstone. It says "After a short rest each family set out to claim and
mark the land for which they had bargained before they left their homes to
cross the mountains. The Denbos chose the land where Denbo and Denbo
Heights now stand. The Woodfills chose the land at the foot of this hill
and which has since been known as "Low Hill." The Hockins, the land where
we are standing (NOTE: they are referring to the Taylor Cemetery where the
DAR ceremony took place which could be in or near Uniontown, PA) a broad
level strip, . . . and decided this would be the place for a meeting house
being a central place as the others had gone further west and north. They
cleared the land, dressed the logs and built a church known as "Log Church"
or "Hockins Meeting House." What this seems to me to say is, of the
families that came together to Redstone (Brown, Crawford, Denbo, Godshall,
Woodfill, Hawkins and several others), the Woodfills lived at Low Hill and
the Godshalls and others settled further west and north.

Also in Mr. Brenton's notes is written that one of the Woodfield daughters,
Mary, who was born in Wales in 1750 and went to live with the Gudschalls
about 1765/66, married a James Brenton ca. 1772. In 1779 James and Mary
moved to Mercer Co., KY. After James was killed in the Battle of Blue
Licks, Mary sold out and bought land in 1787 in Shelby Co., KY. She sold
this land in 1800 (the year that Andrew bought land in Shelby) and moved to
Trimble Co., KY. I thought this was interesting because James and Mary
seem to be the first couple to move to KY.

Terri Montigny made a wonderful discovery last year in the dusty basement
of the Uniontown, PA court house. She found a primary source document about
one of Andrew's old debts. Apparently in 1757 he owed someone money and the
note clearly stated he was in Richland, Bucks Co, PA. She also found where
Andrew was owed money from someone and he turned the note over to Andrew,
Jr. who in turn turned it over to a Woodfill in KY. She said the name was
spelled lots of different ways, but the Bucks Co note was "Gotchel."
Barbara was the wife's name in all cases where it was given.
