John WHITMORE was born in 1589 in Hitchen, Hertsfordshire England. He died in October 1648 at the age of 59 in Stamford, Fairfield Co. CT. resident at Watertown, MA. In 1639 he is recorded as taking out a homelot in Wethersfield, CN. This homesteader lot was located east of theRiver landing, now called Rocky Hill. He built a house and barn on thisland and. About 1640 he sold his land of 54 acres to Robert Treat andjoined a group led by Pastor Richard Denton and settled at Stamford, CN.Records show that John Whitmore was awarded 10 acres of land in thesecond distribution at Stamford. He soon became a well respected citizenhaving been made a freeman in 1642, was deputy to the General Court in1643 and a representative to the New Haven Assembly in 1647.
John Whitmore was a representative in the General Court of New Haven.
He was murdered at Stamford, where he lived, while in search of cattle inthe woods. An Indian, the son of a Sachem, brought in a report of hisdeath, which he charged to Taquatoes. His body was sought for in vain,until that Indian led the way to the spot, and it was very evident thathe was one of the murderers; but he made his escape. An account of thisepisode follows. "(1649) The commissioners of New Haven informed the restof the commissioners, that in or about Oct. last, John Whitmore, one ofthe deputies of Stamford, a peaceable, inoffensive man, not apt toquarrel or provoke any of the Indians, going forth to seek his cattell,returned not according to expectation, nor could be found by the Englishthat sought him; but, quickly after, the son of a Sogamore who lives nearStanford came to the towne, and told the English that John Whitmore wasmurdered by one Torquatoes, had some of his cloths and particularly hisshirt, made of cotton-linen. Hereupon the English and some Indians wentinto the woods to take the murthered body for buriall; but, though theybestowed much time and labore, could not find it. Divers of the Englishat Stanford suspected Sangamore's son to be either the author or theacessory of the murder, but had not the satisfying grounds to seize andcharge him. About two or three months after, Uncas coming to Stanford,calling the Indians thither, and inquiring after the murdered body, theforementioned Songamore's son, and one Rohoron, another suspected Indian,led some of the English, and some of Uncas his men, to the place wherethe murdered body, or the relicts of it lay. The carcase was brought toStanford. The Sogamore's son, and Rohoron fell on trembling, and therebyconfirmed the suspicion of the English, and wrought suspicion in some ofthe Mohegin Indians, so they said those two Indians were nought, meaningthey were guilty."

According to the American "Whitmore Genealogy" two brothers, Sir Georgeand John Whitmore (sons of Roger Whitmore b.1565, England) migrated toAmerica in the early 1630's. Sir George, a bachelor, was a governmentofficer in Nova Scotia, and lived at Halifax. While on a voyage fromHalifax to Massachusetts, supposedly to settle an estate on his brother,he was drowned. John (called the lost brother) appears on the records ofWethersfield, Connecticut, as early as 1638. He moved to Stamford in1641, and was one of its first founders and settlers. His name is on thesecond and third lists of the Colonists; was given in the firstdistribution of land ten acres; admitted Freeman, 1642; Deputy to GeneralCourt October 27, 1643; Representative to New Haven Assembly in 1647. Waskilled by the Indians in 1648. John married in England. The name of hisfirst wife is not known. He married again in America to the widow Jessup,who brought him wealth.
