He was a merchant in London before his marriage. He was chosen by th e Assembly of Connecticut in 1686 as their agent to present address to th e throne (King James II) about their charter, and was thanked for his goo d service.
He resided at Hartford, and Savage says he may have returned to Engl and. He died in 1699, leaving Joseph his son to administer his estate . Barbour says he died in London in 1699. Parents: Major William WHITING and Mrs. Susanna WHITING.

Major William WHITING^{487,1518,4708,4711,4714,4715,4716,4717} was born about 1600 in England. He died after 24 July 1647 at the age of 47 in Hartford, Hartford County, CT. William Whiting was at Hartford in 1636, a wealthy merchant who had bee n engaged in a patent for lands at Swamscot with Lord Say and Lord Brook . He had wife Susanna, son William and perhaps John before leaving Englan d. Savage says that possibly he came with Thomas Wiggin in 1633, and prob ably he came from Cambridge MA, since other prominent persons removed the nce that year. He was an early member of First Church, and his name is o n the Founders Monument of Hartford. In 1637 Whiting was one of the firs t representatives; in 1641, Assistant; and he served as Treasurer of th e Colony from 1643 to his death in 1647, when he was called Major .
In 1646/1647, Magistrate William Whiting sued Thomas Ford for slande r; Thomas was fined more than L4 and costs of court.
William made several voyages, making his will 20 March 1643 in antic ipation of one. A codicil drawn 2 April 1646 also mentioned a voyage, bu t it may have been only to the Delaware river, where he maintained a trad ing house, as also at Westfield. An addition to that will was declared 2 4 July 1647, and he died soon after, for his widow was granted adminisrat ion on 2 September 1647.
The probate record shows: "Whiting, William, Hartford. Inv. L2854-0 0-00 taken 20 April 1643. I, William Whiting, doe intend a voyage presen tly unto sea. I give to my wife halfe my household stuffe of all kinds , and one fourth parte of my personal estate, and her widdowes estate i n my now dwelling house and lands at Hartford untill my sonne William b e 21 years of age; and after, if she continue a widow, I give her the hal fe of my sd howse and land for life. I give to my sonne William L100 mor e than I give to either my sonne John or Samuel; I give to John & Samue l L100 more to each than I give to my daughter Sarah or Mary. I give L2 0 to Mr. Hooker, L10 to Mr. Stone, L5 to mending the Highway betwixt my h wse and the meeting house, also L5 to some godly poore of the towne. I d esire Mr. John Haynes, Mr. Edward Hopkins, Mr. John Webster, with Mr. Hoo ker & Mr. Stone, to be Overseers. I give to my father and mother L20 . William Whiting.

In the Granberry Family, the Margery Parker mentioned in the 1646 wi ll above is identified as the wife of William Parker; both were born in E ngland. William died at Saybrook CT 21 December 1686, and Margery died a t Saybrook 6 December 1680. The authors comment on the L10 legacy: "Thi s was a good-sized legacy to receive from a man, even though wealthy, wh o had a wife and children; and though no relationship is mentioned, it i s likely that Margery was connected in some way with the Whitings or tha t they brought her to this country as a member of their household. The P arker children were all recorded at Saybrook, though the older ones mus t have been born at Hartford. The eldest was born in 1637, so the marria ge of William and Margery probably occurred soon after they came to Hartf ord."
The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire gives informa tion about Capt. Thomas Wiggin, gentleman. Wiggins witnessed delivery o f the Vines patent 25 June 1630, the Hilton patent 7 July 1631, and of Pi scataqua 22 October 1631. He was in England 31 August 1632, and there o n 19 November 1632 when he wrote to Sec. Cooke estimating the English i n N.E. as about 2000. A week later a patent was granted by the Council o f N.E. In March 1632/1633 he was called the chief agent (in England) o f the honest men about to buy out the Bristol men's plantation at Piscata qua and plant 500 people before Michaelmas. Winthrop, on 10 November 163 3, records his arrival at Salem in the James with about 30 men. He went d irectly to Piscataqua from where he wrote a letter in November 1633. A s agent for Lords Say and Brooke and in his own interest, he was oppose d to the Mason claims, and in time became a strong adherent of Massachuse tts and a help in extending their power. His wife Katherine was willed L5 , and each of her children L5 by her brother Mr. William Whiting.
