Robards, wid. Thomas Whitmore, the founder of the Middletown, CN familycame from one of the Western counties of England to Boston in 1635, aged20, supposedly sailing from Bristol, England. He was probably ofWatertown, MA first, then of Wethersfied, CN in 1639. His name is writtenWhitmore, in the Colonial Records of Wethersfield, where he was alandowner in 1639/40. Later he removed to Hartford, CN about the time ofthe dificulty that arose between the colonists at Wethersfield in1640/41. In 1650, Thomas Whitmore, John Hall, and several others wereamong the first to settle the plantation of Massabesack/Mattebesick. Thefollowing year the General Court "odered, sentenced and decreed" thatMassabeseck should be a "towne"; the Proprietors changed the name toMiddletown, confirmed by the General Court. Thomas Whitmore representedMiddletown in
the General Assembly in 1654 and 1655. The homestead of Thomas Whitmore,was situated on the north end of the Main Street, east side, one of themost desirable locations on the town plot, part of which was forgenerations known as "The Whitmore Property". Today we find the stately,imposing building, Church of the Holy Trinity (Eposicopal) located onland, reputed to be, that which was originally owned by Thomas Whitmore,Main Street, Middletown, CN.

Thomas is the ancestor of the "Wetmore" line whereas his brothers usedthe name "Whitmore".

He was one of the first settlers of Middletown. He was constable.1652-1653, and 1662-1663 townsman; grand levy man; rate maker; and poundkeeper; deputy 1654-1655, he with ten others were appointed by theGeneral Court a committee "to press men and necesaries", for theexpedition against the Narragansett Indians. In 1668 the General Court"Abated Thomas Whitmore his rate that was payable this year to thecountry for his services in ferrying Assistants and Deputies over theriver". His five acre home lot was on the east side of Main Street,between Green and Ferry Streets. Some of the descendants of his familymoved to Ohio soon after the Revolution.

He was a deacon in the church of Middletown. He was the richest man inMiddletown. His nine boys and seven girls are listed as legatees,inlcuding their ages, in the inventory of his estate.
