Catalina Catalynte Jeronomus (Du Trieux) TRICO was born about 1605 in Pris, Waesland, Hainault, Belgium, The Netherlands. She died on 11 September 1689 at the age of 84 in Wallabout, Brooklyn, New York. She was also known as Catalynte Tricault. Catalina has reference number 389. LDS-AFN-35ZD-LA
*The Tricault Family is from Douay, France. She had 11 children, 7-daughters and 4-sons 1625-1650
*First name is also spelled Catalyn. Her place of birth could be Pris, or Walsland, Hainault, Belgium
*She was married at Waalse Hervormde Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, The Netherlands on January 21, 1634 and died on Sept 11, 1689 in Long Island, New York.
* According to data in "Huguenot Ancestors" represented in the membership of the Huguenot Society of New Jersey, Clayton Library, Gen 974.9K under New Jersey Catalyntie Trico arrived in the U S on the ship UNITY, lived on Fort Orange (Albany) New York and died at the Waalabout, Brooklyn, New York
In this same publication Catalyntie's husband, Joris Jansen De Rapalie was born about 1600 in Rochelle, France. This article goes on to state that the founder of the De Rapalie family was Gaspard Colet De Rapella, born in 1605 in Chatillon sur Loire, France. Joris was also the nephew of the famous Admiral Coligny.

Sarah deRapello (Rapalje) was born at Ft Orange (Albany)
Her Father left with 31 other families and they spoke French. They entered New York Bay. 18 families were left at Albany under the command of Adrian Joris, a Lieut to Capt. May Her fathers name, as he wrote it in Walloon French was Simon deRapello but the Dutch of it is Simon Rapelye. Her mothers name was Du Trieux in modern form Truax.

"Historic New York - Origin of Breuckelyen" Harrington Putman pg 25-31
" (4)The term Waal, however, means a basin or inner harbor, and Hoght, a bend. Hence the word may have be signified "the bend of the inner harbor," like a similar place called Waal-boght in the city of Amsterdam, (5) This name was some times abridged as Waal, or the Wale, On the faith of old family (The Rapalje Family) traditions, it was long and confidently asserted that on the shores of this bay was born the first child of Dutch settlers on Long Island. This claim of priority for the Waal-boght settlement is not established. Joris Jansen De Rapalje, a Huguenot who had married Catelyna Trico of Paris, and had resided at Fort Orange and later had an inn at New Amsterdam, eventually came to live in a farm on the Waaal-boght. The purchase was made on June 16, 1637. (6) It was their eldest daughter Sarah who was erroneously claimed to have been born on Long Island before 1630. After the English conquest, Catelyna's husband died, and she lived on at the Waal-boght -THE MOTHER OF BROOKLYN - affectionately absorbed in her 11 children and their descendents, who in 1679 already numbered 145. (7) A visitor, who then saw her, described her a devoted mother with her whole soul to her progeny. "Nevertheless she lived alone by herself, a little apart from the others, having her little garden and other conveniences which she took care of herself." Her house was probably near the present site of the U S Marine Hospital. When Gov Dongan wished to establish, as a fact, that the earliest settlements in the direction of the Delaware were Dutch, he had recourse to the evidence of this venerable dame. (The Ferry) In 1684, she was summoned before his Excellency, and was apparently still vivacious, as she gave her deposition. Describing her arrival here in 1623, she delighted to relate that: "Fouer woman came along with her in the same ship, in which the Governor Arian Jarissen came also over, which fouer women were married at sea," and afterwards their husbands went to Delaware. In 1688, she made another affidavit at her house "in New Yorke Wale." Recalling the bitter struggle with Indians on Long Island and Manhattan, she pleasantly alluded to her previous like with them, for three years at Fort Orange, "all of which time ye so Indians were all quiet as lambs and came and traded with all ye freedom imaginable."

After Joris's death, Catalyntie continued to live at her farm. She was described by a nephew after a visit to her in 1680 as follows:
".....an old Walloon woman...74 years old. She is worldly-minded, with mere bonte (human goodness), living with her whole heart, as well as body, among her progeny, which now number 145, and will soon reach 150. Nevertheless, she lives alone by herself, a little apart from the others, having her little garden and other conveniences, with which she helped herself..."

In 1948, the Genealogical Society of Utah microfilmed it on 199 rolls of microfilm. This opened the way for Americans to do serious genealogical research on these foreign families in the Netherlands.

The first two entries for the Rapalje family in this index are dated in 1624, and the second of these, dated 13 January 1624 at Amsterdam, contains the marriage of two future emigrants to New York. It says, "Joris Raparlie born in Valenchiene (Valenciennes in French) (age) 19 (years), boratwercker (living at) Waelport (section of Amsterdam) and Catharina Triko (here spelled Friko, but in the original Dutch it is Trico)(living at) Nes (in Amsterdam) born at Pris in Waesland (French speaking area) (age) 18, accompanied by Marry Flamengh, her sister." The original entry says that Catherine Trico was born at Paris, but this is deleted and "Pris" is recorded.
