" iii. SUSANNAH, bapt. Oct. 20, 1625; d. s. p." Robert Howard has Susanna as the dau. of William Towne, who was b. in 1625. However, that Susanna Towne d.s.p. Robert Howard's Susanna Towne (b. ca 1625) could not have been the mother of Martha Hayward who was b. in 1620/21.It may be that she is the sister of William Towne and the dau. of John Towneand Margaret Walden? Savage says that Thomas Hayward m. Susanna [with no last name]

Christened: 20 Oct 1625 Place: St. Nicholas Ch., Gt. Yarmouth, Co.,Norfolk, England
Buried: Place: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Ma Parents: John TOWNE and Elizabeth "Alice" CLARKE.

Spouse: Deacon Thomas HAYWARD (Immigrant). Susanna TOWNE (Immigrant) and Deacon Thomas HAYWARD (Immigrant) were married before 1623 in Aylesford, Kent, England. Children were: Martha (Mary) HAYWARD (Immigrant), John HAYWARD, Joseph HAYWARD, Nathaniel HAYWARD.

William TOWNE Immigrant1430 was born on 18 March 1597/8 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He was christened on 21 May 1603 in St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He died on 24 June 1673 at the age of 75 in Topsfield, MA. WILLIAM2 TOWNE (John1) was baptized in the church of St. Nicholas, GreatYarmouth, Norfolk, on March 18, 1598/9. He was married to Jone (Joanna)Blessing on April 25, 1620, in the same church, where, between 1621 and1634, their first six children were baptized. Inasmuch as the name Blessing has not been found after considerable search in the NorfolkCounty records at Norwich and as the marriage record of "Jone" is theunique instance of the name in the parish register at Yarmouth during theperiod searched (1558-1611), it would seem probable that she was aforeigner, many emigrants from Germany and the Low Countries having beenattracted to Yarmouth by the herring fisheries in the sixteenth century.Ageneral search for the name in records covering all England has beenfruitless, and families named Blessing now living in the United Statesclaim a German origin.

The first record of William Towne in America appears in the town bookofSalem in 1640 when he was granted "a little neck of Land right overagainst his house on the other side of the river." In the same year hesued John Cook in what seems to have been a boundary dispute and obtaineda verdict and costs. Itis probable that Towne was in Salem some yearsbefore 1640, however. The list of grants by the town to that portion ofits territory called the North Fields is undated and the best opinionseems to indicate that the grants were made before 1635, when the townrecords begin. William Towne's name appears on this list, and it was inthe North Fields that he lived.

In 1651 Towne purchased land in the neighboring town of Topsfield fromWilliam Paine of Ipswich. This farmcontained forty acres "part of whichis plow land, another part is meaddow, another part is upland unplowed, all lying together," bounded by William Howardtoward the east, WalterRoper on the north and a "Sertaine River" toward the south or southwest. There were also included two acres on the south side of the river.

He sold his Salem property to Henry Bullock in 1652 and bought additionalland at Topsfield in 1656. In 1660 in testifying in a lawsuit his age wasestimated at three score years. He was made a commoner of Topsfield in1661, and his wife was dismissed from the Salem church to that ofTopsfield in 1664. Ontheoccasion of the marriage of his son, Joseph, toPhebe Perkins, daughter ofDeacon Thomas Perkins, in 1663, William Townedeeded two-thirds of his real property to Joseph, with whom he and hiswife doubtless lived for the remainder of their days.

Joanna Towne figured in a series of suits brought by and against Rev.Thomas Gilbert, the Topsfield minister, in 1670. Gilbert, by his owntestimony and that of his wife, was a sick man and he was doubtless oferratic temperament, but some of his principal parishioners laid his actsand eccentricities to overindulgence in drink, and the court seems tohave considered their suspicions credible. Most of the evidence produceddealt with a dinner at the parsonage between two Sunday services at whichMr. and Mrs. Gilbert had Capt. JohnGould, Mr. Thomas Perkins, and theirwives, and old Mrs. Towne as their guests. A gold cup (surely a raretreasure in seventeenth-century New England) filledwith wine was passedabout the table and Mr. Gould alleged that Mr. Gilbert drank toofreelytherefrom. Joanna Towne (her age being given at seventy-five)testifiedthat on Sunday Mr. Gilbert had administered the "sacramentswetly unto us" andthat after the service "I was att dinner att MterGilberts table ... and sat next to him on his right hand, and though somereport that he drank too much of the sacrament wyn ... I believe he iswronged, for I that then sat next him sawno such matter ... And I cansaifly take my oath that though our minister had the cup twyce in hishand, yet the first tyme he drank not one drop of it, but gave it out ofhis hand to Thomas Perkins, bidding him give it to me, for I needed itmor than he, being older.
