John Towne. William Towne, the emigrant ancestor of the Towne family of Topsfield, was married and had six children baptized in the parish church of St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. Towne's age was estimated in 1660 as "three score years," when he testified in a court proceeding, which would indicate the approximate date of his birth as 1600. There can be no reasonable doubt, therefore, that he was that William, son of John and Elizabeth Towne, who was baptized at St. Nicholas' on March 18, 1598/9.

The only Towne entries in the Great Yarmouth register for this period are as follows:

1597 Aug. 28. Arthur, son of John and Alice Town, bapt. 1598(9) March 18. William, son of John and Elizabeth Town, bapt. 1600 Sept. 1. John Town and Margaret Walden, married. It is not uncommon to find the names Alice and Elizabeth used interchangeably, and it is therefore possible that Arthur and William had the same mother. The probate records for Norfolk, Feet of Fines and Chancery Proceeding yielding no additional facts, it can merely be stated in regard to John Towne that he married Elizabeth (or Alice) before 1597, hadtwo sons, Arthur and William, born in 1597 and 1599, and, on the death of his wife, married Margaret Walden in 1600. There are no further Towne items in the parish register until the marriage of William Towne in 1620. Page 504:

Since 1927, when I published "The Ancestry of Lieut. Amos Towne, The Norfolk Record Society has produced many volumes of documentary material dealing with that county, including probate indices, subsidy rolls, etc., but nothing in them throes further light on the Towne family of Great Yarmouth. The name Towne is not common, but some of the name are found in southern Lincolnshire and northern Suffolk, and, as Great Yarmouth is on the Suffolk border, our Townes may have come from the latter county. This would seem to be made more probably by the fact that at Somerleyton, in northern Suffolk, an Edmund Town m.Elizabeth Sporle on July 9, 1581. Somerleyton was the parish of John Blyssing [Blessing] who may have been the grandfather of Joan Blessing of Great Yarmouth who m. William Town, the emigrant. As William and Joan Towne named theirsecond son Edmund it is, I think, a proper guess that Edmund Towne, the Somerleyton bridegroom, was William Towne's uncle. John Towne, the father of the emigrant, was not a freeman of Great Yarmouth nor any others of the name, and his status was doubtless very simple.

1. John Towne is represented in the registers of the parish of St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, co Norfolk, by the baptism of two children and his later marriage to Margaret Walden on Sept. 1, 1600. The first of the children baptized is entered as son of John and Alice Town and the second as son of John and Elizabeth Towne. The clerk may have made an error in writing the mother's name in one case or the other, or John Towne may have had two wives in close succession. However, the late Mr. Bower Marsh, a highly experienced English genealogist, has said that he has found Alice and Elizabeth used interchangeably more than once.

There seems to be disagreement with respect to the grandparents ofRebecca Towne Nurse, probably due to confusion about which William Townewas which. This was posted by Carrie Bodensteiner

My notes show him as the son of either John Towne and Elizabeth Clarke or Richard Towne and Ann Denton, and Ihave not found anything that would show which lineage is the more reliable. If he is definitely the son of John and Elizabeth, I would like to know. " with a reply "From Vol XVII June 1997 ABOUT TOWNE Article entitled "Who Were William Towne's Parents Written by Jim Roome, Hist.indicates that Norfolk Record Office in Norwich, Eng. found an entry in the Parish Register for the St. Nicholas Parish Church of Yarmouth: "William j Towne, baptized 18th March 1598/99, son of John and Elizabeth.His marriage to Joanna and the baptism of six of their children are also recorded in the parish register."
