Parents: James D. THREETON and Elizabeth Francis SMILEY. John THREETON was born about 1833 in near Leuterbach, Saarland, Germany. He died on 4 July 1887 at the age of 54 in Springfield, LA. Descendants of John Threeton believe this German native was one of the true pioneers who settled in Livingston Parish, Louisiana before 1860. He reportedly left Germany as a stowaway on a ship, and settled in the Springfield area where he became well known and very popular among his neighbors and friends. Legend says he was resourceful, full of fun and frolic, and was a generally good citizen who participated in community celebrations, helped his fellow man and joined the Civil War. He died July 4, 1887, when a cannon, used to celebrate the nation's birthday, exploded, killing him outright. He is buried in the Springfield Cemetery. His grave site, along with that of his wife, Lucinda, was renovated and a headstone obtained from the Verteran's Administration was dedicated in a brief ceremony conducted by numerous descendants. Not much is known about his early life in America, but he supported his family by making boots and was also a carpenter. A person with these two skills was very much in demand in the early years when Livingston Parish was becoming the home of many families who came from the East Coast and other Southern states by way of the Mississippi. John Threeton is his adopted name. He was born Johann Dreystadt, in 1833 near Lauterbach, Saarland, in Germany. The date of his marriage to Lucinda Hall is not known. However, the couple had 11 children who all lived fruitful and interesting lives. One of his friends was Dr. George Colmer, a physician who practiced in the Florida parishes, often traveling by buggy or on horseback to treat patients in their homes. Dr. Colmer made numerous entries of happenings in a dairy which is on file at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. Threeton was often mentioned in the dairy, including the fact that Threeton made numerous pairs of boots and shoes for Dr. Colmer, including footwear made out of alligator hide and an umbrella made from sheep skin. An adventurer by nature, John's antics often saw him seeking treatment from Dr. Colmer. In 1858, Threeton fell from a horse while on a bear hunt, and again on April 3, 1862, he suffered a head injury when he fell from the gallery at the Carter plantation home, south of Springfield. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and was mustered at Ponchatoula as a private on April 10, 1862. He was assigned to Company D, 9th Battalion, Louisiana Infantry. John Threeton left many descendants with his boisterous nature, while others inherited his carpentry skills, but according to history "touched most of his descendants with his old world thriftiness."
