Name: Richard (Rock) TAYLOR 1 Sex: M Birth: ABT 1622 in London, England 2 Death: 1 AUG 1703 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA 3 4 Occupation: Farmer
Note: There were two Richard Taylors early in town, both of whom were enrolled among those able to bear arms in 1643, and both had wives named Ruth. To distinguish them, one was called Richard Taylor, tailor from his occupation, and the other Richard Rock, from the circumstance that his house was built beside a great rock. . . .He was constable in 1656 and 1668, surveyor of highway in 1657, excise officer in 1664, and on the Grand Jury in 1685. "
Note: "There were two Richard Taylors of the village of Yarmouth in those very early days. One, who appears to have been the older, was known as Richard Taylor, tailor, due to his trade and the other was known as Richard "Rock" Taylor (our ancestor) from the circumstance of his having built his cottage near a very large rock on his estate. This rock is still in Yarmouth and bears an appropriate plaque".
Note: "Richard "Rock" Taylor came from England in the year 1635 during the period known as the "Great Migration". He came aboard the ship "Truelove" which left port at Gravesend, England 5 June 1635. Navigating the Atlantic via Bermuda, the "Truelove" reached Yarmouth Port sometime in 1636. Although proof is not yet substantial, it is believed that Richard was accompanied to the colonies by his Mother, brothers and sisters."
Note:"Richard Rock was born in 1619 and died 1 August 1703. He built his house near the rock in the year 1639. In 1643 he married Ruth Burgess, probably the daughter of Thomas Burgess. This union resulted in the birth of 7 children. He is mentioned in the early records once again as having served in 1675 in King Phillip's War, although this was probably his son, Richard, Jr."
Note: The original rock, by which he got his nickname, is located across the street from the Taylor-Bray Farm. It was visited by Barbara Fleming in August, 1997, and photo is on file:
Note: "Ye Old Taylor Rock Note: Near this rock about Note: the year 1639 Note: Richard Taylor Note: Built His House Note: Erected by George F. Note: and William F. Bray".
Note: "The Bray farm is situated on land that was originally owned and settled by Richard Taylor circa 1640. There is a rock marking the place the original Taylor homestead was located. During the latter part of the 1700's, George and William Bray, two brothers who had worked for the Taylor family, purchased this land from the Taylors. Here the Bray brothers established a successful shipyard, as well as a prosperous farm. Although the days of ship building at this site have long since passed, the land is still farmed by the present owners. The buildings presently standing were constructed by the Bray brothers during the late eighteenth century."
Note: "John Joyce died at Yarmouth on 21 Dec 1666 (Town Recs.) leaving a will dated 20 Nov. 1666 in which he mentions wife Dorothy, his only son Hosea (named sole executor) and daughters Mary and Dorcas. There is also a small bequest to Richard Taylor atte the Rock (MD 16: 160f; New England Hist. and Gen. Reg. 6:168)."
Note: "The will of Richard Taylor of Yarmouth (who died Aug. 1, 1703), dated Sept. 2, 1693, with codicil dated Oct. 8, 1699, proved Oct. 6, 1703, and recorded in Vol. 2, p. 162, at Barnstable, mentions sons Richard and Elisha, daughters Mehitable, Keziah Eldredge, and Hannah Jenkins, and grandsons Samuel Eldredge and Jehosaphat Eldredge."
Note: "Richard, Yarmouth, farmer, call. says tradit. rock Richard, from his first build. his cottage against a rock, m. a. 1646, Ruth Burgess, perhaps d. of Thomas. . . his w. d. 22 June 1693, and he d. 1 Aug. 1703." 5 3 3 3 6 7 8 9 4

From Dawn Taylor" <dawn58@bellsouth.net> June 2002 email
Sheep festival provides shear enjoyment By Carol K. Dumas cdumas@cnc.com </ym/Compose?To=cdumas@cnc.com&YY=16781&order=up&sort=date&pos=0> YARMOUTHPORT - Bray Farm Road is like many other roads off Old King's Highway - a neat subdivision with landscaped yards and attractive houses that could be Anywhere USA. But at the end of the street, in the midst of Cape Cod suburbia is an unexpected, bucolic scene. A farm that's been here since 1639 lives on thanks to the foresight of townspeople and the dedicated stewardship of neighbors. A herd of about 35 sheep graze the pasture, which has a panoramic view of the marsh and Cape Cod Bay. An 18th century half-Cape farmhouse, a root shed and a barn - made from an old salt works - still stand. Three-hundred acres of conservation land border the property, preserving its marsh and bay vista. High bush blueberries grow as tall as trees; the trees are wide of girth, an uncommon site on the Cape, where acres of forestland were cleared by early settlers. Thanks to Town Meeting voters in 1987, the 23-acre property was snatched at the 11th hour from developer's hands - plans for a subdivision were already in place - and turned over to the town of Yarmouth for "historic preservation and conservation" purposes. The town, however, did little preservation of the structures, and the farm began falling into disrepair. The sheep often broke through the fences and wandered down the street. A group of neighbors began meeting, interested in the farm's future, particularly when the town considered leasing the farm as a children's camp, which the neighbors felt was not appropriate for a historic site. In the spring of 2001, 17 neighbors formed the Taylor-Bray Farm Preservation Association and began working with the Yarmouth Historical Commission to fix up this bucolic treasure, a unique combination of a historic site and conservation area, for the public to enjoy. This weekend, the two groups are co-sponsoring the first large-scale public event held on the property to increase public awareness of the farm. The Sheep Festival takes place Saturday, June 8, with border collie demonstrations, wool spinning and sheep shearing. Priscilla Gregory, co-chairman of the Yarmouth Historical Commission, the town panel that oversees Yarmouth's historic sites, describes the Taylor-Bray Farm as a "work in progress." "It's great when you get a non-profit group like this interested," said Gregory. "They are terrific, a great group of people. I've always believed you have to get the private sector involved in these kinds of projects. Like so many things that start at an emotional level, down the road there's often not the money available behind it. There are so many things that take precedence in funding - police, fire, the schools. We're last on the list, and I understand that." The farm was originally owned and settled by Richard Taylor in 1639 and remained in the Taylor family for several generations until 1896, when George and William Bray acquired the property. The Brays had worked for the Taylors and sustained a prosperous, working farm until 1941; some still recall the strawberries they sold to the public. The farm had various owners until the town bought the land in 1987. The town pays for a caretaker, who keeps the fields mowed and watches the buildings. The sheep are owned and cared for by Tom Sheret, who used to live on the property. The Taylor-Bray Association raises funds through memberships and donations. "Our goal is to start small and work up," says Jack Duggan, president of the association, in summing up the "master plan" for the farm. "We were forced to think beyond the mission statement." The group started shaping its vision by looking at what repairs needed to be done and breaking down the projects into what the members themselves could do (some are carpenters and handymen, Duggan points out) and which projects would need to be contracted out. The town funded a new roof on the farmhouse in 2001. Much has been accomplished in a year. A locksmith was hired to secure the buildings, members replaced the barn door and thinned out the overgrown blueberry patch. This spring, an area near the road was cleared for a community garden - first proposed 10 years ago - and all 20 plots were spoken for the day they became available. A plot behind the farmhouse has been cleared for growing corn, squash and pumpkins, and the fencing is finally being repaired to keep in the sheep. "We learned how to proceed from the very general to the specific," says Duggan, a retired foreign policy analyst who moved here in 1996. The overall goal is to make Taylor-Bray Farm accessible to the public. To that end, Duggan and others want the farm to be used as an educational tool. Already, Dennis-Yarmouth students visit the farm, and Cape Cod Regional Technical High School students will be working on rewiring the old barn. Duggan envisions an archaeological program in the future, perhaps working with the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, and programs that will education people about farm life, a dwindling lifestyle on Cape Cod. Much larger and costlier projects loom on the horizon, namely, extensive electrical, plumbing, heating and foundation work in the farmhouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The farmhouse, which reflects different periods of history, has a large open hearth with a beehive oven and floorboards appear to be original to the structure. In only a year, dues-paying members have grown from 17 to 220, and come from all over Yarmouth, out of state and even Bermuda. "It's become an obsession to help restore this place," Duggan says. "It's rewarding to see some of the things that have already been accomplished. We were just a group of neighbors who wanted to get involved." Annual membership dues in the Taylor Bray Farm Preservation Association range from $15 for individuals to $100 for business sponsors and are tax deductible. For information, write to the Taylor-Bray Farm Preservation Association, P.O. Box 66, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

The Taylor-Bray Farm is situated on land in Yarmouth Port and was originally owned and settled by Richard Taylor in 1639. Through many generations, it remained in the Taylor family, until 1896 when George and William Bray, two brothers who had worked for the Taylors, acquired the land. It was sustained as a prosperous working farm by the Bray family until 1941. Between then and the late 1980's ownership changed hands a number of times.
