Ho lding two thirds of a fee of Robert de Stuteville, in Yorkshire in 1166. As Cowesby was hel d by Hugh fitz Baldric at Domesday, the estate was very likely part of that recovered by Robe rt III de Stuteville, father of Osmund. In a list of benefactions to Rievaulx abbey, there i s mention of a gift by Osmund, which William de Stuteville his brother confirmed as overlord , of facilities at Cowesby including a road which the monks made in the time of his father. ROBERT III de Stuteville of Cottingham, Kettleby Thorpe, Yorks. and Bigby, Lincs. In 113 8 he fought at the Battle of the Standard. Instigated claims to recover property confiscate d from his grandfather in 1147 and was granted 10 knights' fees by Nigel de Mowbray which inc luded the manor of Kirkby Moorside and land in Warwickshire shortly after 1154. Supervisor o f the works of Bamburgh castle in 1166 and sheriff of Yorkshire from Easter 1170 to Michaelma s 1175. Benefactor to the abbeys of St Mary's York, Byland, Rievaulx and Meaux and the prior y of Durham. A charter of confirmation to Rievaulx abbey c.1160-1183 for the health of his so ul and the souls of Robert de Stuteville his grandfather, Robert his father, Erneburga his mo ther and Helewise his wife, and with the consent of his son William, presents the Stutevill e family over four generations. J.C.Atkinson (ed.), 'Rievaulx Cartulary', p.80]. He married, before 1145, Helewise who se parentage is not known and they founded Keldholm priory, a Benedictine nunnery. As 'domin a Helewis uxor Roberti de Stuteuilla' with Osmund 'filius ejus' she witnessed a charter of Wi lliam de Vescy to the brethren of Farne Island in about 1183. Robert had an interest in Cowe sby as shown by a charter of notification dated around 1164-74, by Roger archbishop of York o f the settlement of the controversy between Hugh bishop of Durham and Robert de Stuteville re lating to the chapel of Cowesby. The dispute continued, however, after his death under the ae gis of his son Osmund. Robert died in 1183. Note: The above source has Patrick de Skipwith descending from Robert's father (also Robert) . Burke's Peerage indicates that Patrick was a younger son of this Robert. *********** Parents: Robert III de ESTUTEVILLE Baron Cottingham/Sheriff and Erneberga FITZ BALDRIC. This needs more research. I show this William & Nicholas who married Gunnora d'Aubigny as br others not father & son. Source: "English Baronies, A Study of Their Origin and Descent 1086 -1327" by Ivor John Sanders, 1960, Clarendon Press, Oxford. I do note that Turton & Watney show them as father & son, but as far as credibility/reliabili ty, I choose Sanders - my opinion only. Baron of Cottingham [Ref: Sanders p37] Research note: Turton also mistakenly makes Bertha (niece of Ranulph) and William de Stutevil le ancestors of the later Stutevilles. [Turton, W H *The Plantagenet Ancestry* (London, 192 8 [Reprint by GPC 1993]) 123, 106] [Ref: Richard Borthwick <rgbor@cyllene.uwa.edu.au> messag e to soc.genealogy.medieval 1 Sep 1998] Lord de Stuteville, who married Bertha de Glanville, probably gave the Church of Dedham, in t he Hundred of Lexden, Essex, to Butley Priory, founded by Lord Ranulph de Glanville, his wife 's uncle. This gift continued to be held by the Prior of Butley until the dissolution. The St utevilles were a great baronial house; they came in at the Conquest, and received large posse ssions in England. Robert de Stuteville fought against Henry I. at Tenerchebrai, and was take n prisoner. [fn 86] The family was officially connected with the Glanvilles in the North, an d a close friendship appears to have existed between the two houses. One of them married a da ughter of the De Valoins, which probably cemented still closer the families. William de Stute ville, of Gressenhall, Norfolk (a baron of the realm), espoused Margaret, daughter and heires s of Hugh de Say, of Richard's Castle, from whose descendants it passed by a female to the Ta lbots. The arms of Stuteville and Glanville are still to be seen at Richard's Castle. Berth a de Stuteville (nee Glanville) brought with her, on her marriage, the lordships of Braham an d Leyburn. She had two sons, Robert, ob. s.p.; and Nicholas, who succeeded his brother (7th J ohn). He married Gunnora, daughter of Hugh de Gurney, and relict of Robert de Gant, and by he r had issue Nicholas de Stuteville, who died, 17th Henry III., leaving two daughters and cohe iresses - Johanna, who married Hugh de Wake; and Margaret, the wife of William Mastoc. [fn 87 ] In the year 1207, Robert, son and heir of Ralph, Lord of Middleham, who married Helwisa d e Glanville, daughter of Lord Ranulph de Glanville, the Chief Justiciary, gave 200 marks fin e to the King for livery of the property belonging to Bertha, niece of Lord Banulph de Glanvi lle, and wife of William de Stuteville, lying in Leyburn and Barham. [fn 86] Banks says tha t the family of Skipwiths descend from a younger son of this personage [Ref: Records of the A nglo-Norman House of Glanville from A.D. 1050 to 1880, by Wm. Urmston S.
