John STEBBINS was born in 1625/6 in St. Mary's, Bocking, Essex, England. He died on 7 March 1678 at the age of 52 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Pope says Robert Bartlett is brother to Rowland Stebbins. Also Deborah and Robert Bartlett were called to court to testify against Robert Lyman for his unseemly behavior towards the wife of John Stebbins. This ties the Bartlett family into this family even more. Northampton Court records 25 Sep 1660.

Pope, Pioneers of MA pg. 432; Mentioned in father's will and states he has 9
children.
This John (Stebbins) is most likely the same John as the one from Northampton who appeared in court 25 Sep 1660 to prosecute Robert Lyman for "misdeameaninge himselfe towards his, the said John Stebbin's wife: he the said John Stebbins complaynes to this Court for that the said Robert frequentinge the said John's house did use very evil and unseemly behavior towards his wife enticing her several times that he might ly with her, takinge her in his arms and otherwise venting his unchast desires." Robert Lyman was fined and required to pay Deborah Bartlett and Robert Bartlett for coming as witnesses. These witnesses tie John to the above mentioned Rowland Stebbins--as his daughter-in-law was Abigail Bartlett. Parents: Rowland STEBBINS and Sarah WHITING.

John STEBBINS was born on 28 January 1646/7 in Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts. He was buried in December 1724 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. He died on 19 December 1724 at the age of 77 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. !John Stebbins was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada following the Deerfield Massacre, February 29, 1704. Tanquay's "Dictionaire Genealo gique Des Familles Canadiennes," Volume VII, pp 219 and 558 explains the change in names of this Canadian branch... While in route to Canada, Abigail Nim's father was killed - she was four years old. Not too much is known of what happened to Abigail (aka Marie-Elizabeth Stebenne) except that she might have been adopted by John Stebbins as she was later known to be baptisted as Marie-Elizabeth Stebenne. The Stebenne name is a French expression of the name Stebbins. While we have no records that Marie-Elizabeth was actually adopted into the Stebbins family, we are making that assumption until further evidence dictates the contrary. Note also that John Stebbins, Jr changed his name to Jean Stebbins I, and that other descendents changed their last name to Stebenne. This generation was the very beginning of the Stebenne family name that is so prevelant in French Quebec, Canada... In 1667, it is reported that in Northampton, Massachusetts, John Stebbins, Jr. had been sentenced to ten lashes, or a forthy-shilling fine (John Stebbins, Sr. paid the fine) for complicity in a burglary / runaway attempt by three local youths while townspeople were in church. In 1674 he was embroiled in another case as five people accused him of "lascivious carriage." New England Outpost, page 82, 138, Richard I. Melvoin, W.W. Norton & Company,1988. He served at Springfield under Captain Lathrop and was the only known unwounded survivor of the Bloody Brook Massacre on September 18, 1675. There was another battle at Bloody Brook during
the Deerfield Massacre of 1704. The second day after the massacre he enlisted under Captain Samuel Mosely and served to the close of the war (1675-76). He took the oath of Allegiance at Northampton on February 8, 1678. He, for a time, resided in the vicinity of Boston, then moved to Deerfield at its permanent settle in 1682, lot 35. John Stebbins, Jr. at different dates received land grants at Deerfield and held various offices. At the time of the Deerfield Massacre (February 29, 1704) the house of John Stebbins, Jr. was burned down, he, his wife, and his five children, along with Abigail, his married daughter and her husband, Jacques de Noyen, were captured and taken to Canada. John Stebbins, Jr., his wife Dorothy and their oldest son John III were later redeemed
and returned to New England. His son, Samuel, returned in 1723.The other children all remained in Canada. (A further entry from Dan Vient, descendant of Thankful (Louise-Therese) Stebbins). From my great uncle's research: "The earliest record of the Stebbins family, from which the Vient family is descended. The area known as Deerfield, Massachusetts was originally a land grant to the town of Dedham, purchased from the Pocumtuck Indian tribe in 1670. Shares were sold to settlers who came to live in this
new area, which was then the northern-most outpost in New England. John Stebbins and his family settled in this area now called Deerfield. He was a carpenter by trade, and a soldier in the King Phillip's War. In September 1675 King Phillip's Indians ambushed
most of the male inhabitants at nearby Bloody Brook and massacred all but three men who escaped to seek help. When soldiers from nearby Hadley arrived the next day to help Captain Lothrup's detail, they were all dead but one man, and he was badly wounded. He was Captain John Stebbins, and is known in history as the sole survivor of the Bloody Brook massacre. Deerfield was abandoned for lack of soldiers to protect it.
In 1684 settlers began to return and erected a palisade of logs, erected on end to cover the entire area of about twenty acres. During the Queen Anne's war, a party of 200 French and 142 Indians from Canada attacked Deerfield during bitter cold and deep snows. On February 29, 1704, deep snowdrifts against the palisades allowed the attackers to scale the walls and surprise the garrison. Fierce fighting ensued, and with 111 prisoners, amongst were John Stebbins, his wife and six children the French Captain de Rouville marched his party 300 miles north, through the deep snows to Lake Champlain, then over the ice to Canada. The suffering was intense during this cold march and many prisoners died or were killed by the Indians if they slowed up. Eventually small parties of Indians left the group with captives they selected and the remainder were brought to places like Chambly and Sorel by the French. The Stebbins family was separated; one son Samuel was taken by the Indians and was never heard from again. The parents and some of the children were later ransomed and returned to Deerfield. One little girl, Thankful Stebbins, 13 years old was kept by de Rouville and lived at his home in Chambly. The little girl was re-baptized Therese Louise, and it is from her that the Vient's are descended."
An extensive account of the entire event, the Deerfield Massacre and the march to Canada, are included in the notes of Reverend John Williams and his wife Eunice (Mather) Williams, also found in this Mather family genealogy. Parents: John STEBBINS Deacon and Mary Anne MUNSON.
