He signed a will on 29 August 1679 in New Castle County, Book A, p.79 (See Notes). Johan died before 20 July 1686 at the age of 59 in New Castle County, Delaware Colony.164 He had his estate probated on 20 July 1686 in Will Probate Date-New Castle Co., DE. He owned in 1771 in See Scrapbook for Map of 800 Acre Land Grant. Johan was also known as Johan Stalkofta. He emigrated from at Ft. Christina (Delaware) on the ship Charitas. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE:Biography] Johan Andersson Stälcop

Johan Andersson of Strängnäs, Södermanland, Sweden, was described as 'Johan, a young boy' on the manifest of the ship Charitas when it sailed May 3, 1641, from Stockholm for Gothenburg, where it joined company with the Kalmar Nyckel. Johan was a boy of about 13 or 14 when he was hired by Mäns Kling to go to New Sweden as a farm hand. The two ships departed for the Colony in July and arrived at Fort Christina November 7,1641. Johan Andersson was soon at work and, with the arrival of Governor Printz in 1643, he became one of the first tobacco planters at Upland (now Chester Co.,PA).

On October 1, 1646, at about age 19, Johan Andersson was hired by Governor Printz to be a soldier. With the arrival of new Governor Rising in 1654, he was promoted to the position of 'gunner'. This assignment gave him responsibility for manning the cannons in defense of New Sweden, which may have led to his wearing a piece of armor called a breastplate, which probably explains the nickname of "Stälkofta" (steel coat in Swedish) by which he was usually called in Swedish records. His nickname soon appeared phonetically in Dutch records as "Staelcop" and later passed into English records as "Stalcop." This last version became the basis for the surnames adopted by all of his descendants (Stallcop, Stallcup, Staulcup, Stalcup).

During the Dutch invasion in 1655, Johan Stälkofta was the gunner at Fort Trefaldighet (Trinity) at present New Castle under the command of Captain Sven Skute. Fort Trinity had initially been built in 1651 by the Dutch when the Swedes had withdrawn from their Fort Elfsborg in the area that year as part of retrenchment by New Sweden's Governor Printz. Governor Rising, who replaced Printz in 1654, ousted the Dutch from their fort; and in the process sealed the doom of New Sweden. Dutch Governor , Peter Styvesant, mounted a punitive expedition in , forcing the capitulation of Captain Skute at Fort Trinity on September 1, 1655, and Governor Rising surrendered Fort Christina two weeks later. An article of the treaty of surrender gave Rising the right to inquire into the conduct of the Swedish officers at Fort Trinity. Skute was the 'scapegoat' for the fall of New Sweden, in a court-martial held on Timber Island on September 24, 1655. He was charged with not following Rising's orders and failing to counsel with his officers. Testimony was given that "... he failed to give orders to fire on the Dutch ships as they passed, although Lindestrom and Stälkofta stood by the guns ready to apply the match..."

Johan Andersson Stalcop prospered under Dutch rule . He returned to Christina and within a year he had formed partnerships and began acquiring land. Through purchases and occupation of abandoned property ,he eventually laid claim to all of the land encompassing the former site of Fort Christina and its tributary lands along the North side of the Christina River west of the Brandywine [ The 1701 audit of New Castle County quitrents estimated his total holdings, before subsequent sales and divisions as being almost 2000 acres -- Logan papers 16:26,29] This comprises the greater part of the land now occupied by the downtown area of Wilmington, Delaware. About 1656, he married Christina Carlsdötter, the daughter of Carl Jönsson. Carl Jönsson and his family, from Letstigen in southeastern Värmland, Sweden, arrived on the Mercurius, the last expedition to the colony, which had reached the Delaware River settlement after New Sweden had fallen to the Dutch. Johan Andersson and Christina Carlsdötter established their home only about 400 paces (approximately one-quarter mile) west from the site of Fort Christina. With a grant of land from the Dutch Vice-Director and backing from two other investors, he built a grist mill between 1658-1662 at 'Turtle Fall-kil'. This business stayed in the Stalcop family for three generations.

In 1664, New Netherlands -- including what had been New Sweden -- was seized by the English and became part of the lands held by the Duke of York. As one who had prospered under the Dutch, this was not good news for Johan Andersson Stalcop. In 1669, he was involved in an abortive insurrection against the English called the "Long Finn Rebellion" for its leader Marcus Jacobson. The plan of rebellion was discovered by English authorities before it could be executed; and Jacobson was apprehended and imprisoned pending trial; as was Johan Andersson Stalcop who was perceived as a 'chief instigator' of the plot by the English:
"Johan Andersson and John Coleman were members of the inner circle. Each had secret motives. None too successful farmers, they coveted the estate of Englishmen. The 'Steelcoat', it was whispered, looked lecherously at lovely ladies and dallied with the thought that he could have a harem. His trim, gold-laced uniform [the one he wouldn't give up], especially designed to set off his best features and to divert attention from a certain physical peculiarity, was always glittering where the women of the colony were wont to congregate. It was, in fact, his longing for the wives of other men that first caused his fellows to band together for overthrow."

The trial was held quickly and the prisoners were sentenced. The Long Finn was sentenced to be whipped, branded on the face, and transported from the colony. The rest of the prisoners were fined, with Johan Andersson Stalcop bearing the greatest cost of 1500 guilders.

Ironically, the largest Johan Andersson Stalcop land acquisition occurred in 1671, just two years after the Long Finn Rebellion --- an 800 acre land grant where downtown Wilmington, Delaware, now sits from the same Duke of York he had rebelled against. On April 16, 1675, he sold one-half of his Christina Plantation to Lars Corneliusson and Samuel Petersson, the father-in-law of his son Peter. In 1677, he received another grant for himself and his children from the English for 600 acres on the east side of Red Clay Creek. William Penn acquired the Duke of York's patents for the New Sweden area in 1682. John Andersson Stalcop's land grants were reaffirmed and he was naturalized by William Penn on February 21, 1682/83.

Johan Andersson Stalcop died sometime before February 3, 1685/86 when his Will of August 29, 1679 was proved. His wife, Christina , died about a decade later. They probably were buried in the Old Swedish Burying Ground on their land near the former Fort Christina which later became part of the graveyard of Holy Trinity (Old Swedes') Church.

Accused of being 'a chief fomenter' of the Long Finn Rebellion in 1669, John Andersson Stalcop was fined 1500 guilders. History of Stalcop Research - Sources
The records of the Stalcup Reunions held in Greene County, Indiana 1919 through 1941 have proven invaluable.

L.D. Stallcup’s Outline of the Stallcup Family, 1937, was the first known published study of the Stalcup family. It charts the first six generations of Stalcups in the United States.

General Harry Garwood Staulcup, wrote a thesis for a requirement for a Masters Degree at the University of Delaware in 1946. It includes the early history of the Stalcops in Delaware and lists five generations.

Stallcop Family History and Genealogy 1641-1986 (3 vols) was authored by Earl E. Jones after more than 20 years of research. This is still the definitive Stalcop reference and is the largest family history ever published in Tennessee. It contains over 5,000 names. It has consolidated the previous Stalcop references and incorporated extensive additional research from many collaborators.

Sources at Balch Institute Library, Philadelphia, PA (also containing references to a second Johan Andersson which are easily confused)
Rulle der Völcker So in New Schweden den 1 Marty Anno 1648 [Role List of South Company - all adult males in order of arrival]

Another book which has greatly confused Stalcop research is The Delaware Finns, E.A. Louhi, 1925, Humana Press. This book, a total fraud, apparently retrieved facts from many sources and than changed attribution to Finns. It also, claims that our Johan Andersson died from drowning while a young boy in Sweden.

John Stalcop, son of John Andersson Stalcop of Christina, was naturalized by William Penn in New Castle County in 1683. He married Annika Ericksson before Nov. 1687. They lived on her father's land and on July 3, 1689 they were given title to the plantation. In 1693 their household included two children and Annika's mother and youngest sister. With the death of Jon Stalcop's mother, they sold the Ericksson plantation and returned to the large Stalcop plantation at Christina, where they were living on the arrival of pastor Bjork from Sweden in 1697. Half of the 1000 acres Christina Plantation was then sold for the new Swedish church, Holy Trinity, consecrated in 1699, and for the church glebe. John Stalcop died in July 1700. His Will of 1 July named his wife and four children. The two sons, Jonas and Isreal, were to inherit the Christina plantation, giving their two sisters, Maria and Christina, 50 Pounds apiece when they married or reached the age of 21"
