BARONY OF STAFFORD (I)

EDMUND, BARON OF STAFFORD, son and heir; born 15 July 1273. On 20 August 1294 he had done homage and was to have his lands; on 4 July 1297 he was about to go beyond seas with the King. He was summoned to serve against the Scots in 1298, 1299, 1301, 1302 and 1308. From 6 February 1298/9 to 26 August 1307 he was summoned to Parliament by writs directed Edmundo Baroni de Staford, whereby he is heldto have become LORD STAFFORD. In 1300 his seal was appended to the Barons' letter to the Pope. On 5 April 1305 he was summoned to treat upon the aid for knighting the King's eldest son, and on 18 January 1307/8 to attend the Coronation.

He married, in or before 1298, Margaret, daughter of Ralph and sister and in her issue coheir of Ralph (BASSET) 1st LORD BASSET (of Drayton), by Hawise. He died before 12 August 1308, and was buried in the church of the Friars Minorsof Stafford. He left a will. His wife survived him, and married, 2ndly, ThomasDE PYPE. HUGH (DE STAFFORD), EARL OF STAFFORD, LORD STAFFORD and LORD AUDLEY, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, was born in or before 1342. On his mother's death in 1348 he succeeded (according to modern doctrine) as LORD AUDLEY.In 1359 he joined the Prince of Wales in Aquitaine, and served there for several years. In 1367 he went with the Prince into Spain. On 8 January 1370/1 he was summoned to Parliament v.p. as Hugh DE STAFFORD; from 6 October 1372 as Hugh,EARL OF STAFFORD. From 12 February 1372/3 to 12 November 1373 he was in commissions. In June 1373 he went to Calais. On 23 August 1374 he was a guarantor of the King's loan from the Bardi. In 1375 he went with the Duke of Brittany to Brittany. K.G. between 11 November 1375 and April 1376. After 30 April 1376 he was appointed one of the Earls to consult with the Commons, and one of the King's"Continual Councillors." On the accession of Richard II, he was reappointed tothe Council. From July 1377 to 1386 he was in Commissions. On 16 July 1377 he carved bread and meat before the King at his Coronation, at table in the great hall of Westminster. In 1378 he was rebuked for arrogant language towards the Commons by John Philipot; and on 11 August he slew Robert Hawksley in the quire of Westminster Abbey. On 8 May 1383 he was directed to prepare against invasionin Cornwall. On 20 July 1384 he was licensed with his firstborn son Ralph to hunt in all the King's parks in the presence of the keepers. In 1385 he was going to Scotland on the King's service; but in October the expedition was abandoned. On 20 August 1385 he was appointed steward and bailiff of the Hundred of Macclesfield, forester of Macclesfield, and custodian of the park; on 16 November 1385 he had lent Ð100 to the King. On 27 March 1386 he was licensed to voyage to parts overseas.
