Princess (Matoaka) Pocahontas SONACOCK661,3938,4299,4300,4301,4319 was born in 1595 in Werowocomoco, Orapax, Virginia. She died on 21 March 1617 at the age of 22 in Gravesend, Kent, England. She was also known as ''Lady Rebecca''. (Matoaka) was buried aft death in Gravesend, England.4320 She has Ancestral File Number 1X3Q-HBX. BEFORE HER WEDDING SHE HAD BEEN BAPTIZED A CHRISTIAN
AND RENAMED REBECCA.

Pocahontas was born about 1595-96, a daughter of the Chief over some forty Algonkian Indian villages; these were spread about the shores of the rivers now called the James and the York, which flow into Chesapeake Bay. Her father called Powhatan after his chief village named her Meto-aka and later "Pocahontas", meaning "Playful little Girl".

Powhatan?s rule was threatened by the arrival of the Spanish, French and English mariners, exploring for a NorthWest passage to the (East) Indies. After the death of Elizabeth 1, the end of England?s struggles with Spain and Scotland released capital and manpower for trade, and the conversion of the "savages". The English claim to North America was split between two companies; one based in Bristol, took North Virginia. In spring 1607, three London ships appeared in Chesapeake Bay and though permitted to land, Powhatan discouraged their would-be settlers from staying. When they started to build a fort the Indians attacked, but were repulsed by ship?s cannon. The ships sailed home before the winter, leaving 105 men — no women having been brought — who were only saved from starvation by the success of Captain John Smith in obtaining corn from more distant Indians.

Pocahontas marries

John Rolfe fell in love with Pocahontas and obtained permission from the Governor to marry her. Powhatan consented and sent his two sons to witness the marriage. She was first baptised Rebecca, and then the wedding took place in April 1614. They left for England with the Governor, and a dozen Indians, in April 1616. At this stage they had an infant son Thomas.

Pocahontas in England

While in England, Pocahontas and her entourage of Indians was the subject of much curiosity. She was presented at the court of King James as "the first Christian ever of the Virginian nation". She also met John Smith again, but it is known that the meeting was a disappointment to her, Smith denying the close association with her father.

She was presented to the Bishop of London, at which point it was noticed that that Pocahontas was unwell.

The link with Gravesend

In March 1617, the Rolfes prepared to leave London on Argall?s ship the "George". They were to return with Virginia?s Governor and his family. At this stage Pocahontas? health was deteriorating. She was suffering from tuberculosis, to which the Indians appeared rather prone. Pocahontas was brought ashore at Gravesend, either dead or dying. She is thought to have been buried in the vault beneath the chancel of the local parish church - St. George?s. Her son, Thomas returned to Virginia where he is understood to have numerous descendants. The original church was destroyed by fire on 24th August 1727 and later rebuilt.

In 1896 the memorial tablet to Pocahontas was made in the chancel of St. George?s Church, and the Colonial Dames of America presented the memorial windows in 1914. In 1923 a Virginian received permission to search for the remains of Pocahontas, but nothing conclusive was found.

From the Norman N. Transcript. By Mary Goodard:

Unverified Indiana princesses (usually Cherokee) lurk so pervasively in Oklahoma family trees that anyone claiming actual descent from the legendary Pocahontas may get a cynical grin and a "Yeah, sure.". That's why it is so intriguing to be reminded that this maiden was the real daughter of a real Indian chief. Records exist of her short, eventful life and real descendants.

Even more intriguing: A national Pocahontas Trails Genealogical Association is busy researching her, assembling master files and sending quarterlies and newsletters to nearly 200 members. It has four regional branches, including the year-old Texas-Oklahoma Chapter, which will have a program meeting March 24 in Lawton. This news sent me to the reference books. Sure enough, Capt. John Smith's letters and journals prove Pocahontas was important to the Jamestown Colony for several years, once intervening to save his life.

She married John Rolfe and went with him to England. Pocahontas died there in her early 20s, but first she born a son, Thomas Rolfe. Young Thomas ventured to the New World and helped found several prominent Virginia families, including Randolph, Bolling, Eldridge, Flemming, Gay and Murray. The association has identified close to 120 other related lines, from Abbot to Yuillee. Far from snobbish, the organization describes itself as "a really nice group of people who don't take themselves too seriously in the serious pursuit of their ties to Pocahontas," Members include non-descendants who are just interested in her and in early Virginia history. For details about membership or the Lawton meeting, write: Susan Braddord, Rt. 2 Box 40, Mangum, Ok 73554.

No positive proof has been found for this lineage. However, Larry Anderson makes the following premises:

1. Pocahontas was at least a mid to late teenager when she saved John Smith. She was supposedly married to an Indian brave who had died or been killed previous to her meeting John Smith.

2. John Smith and Pocahontas resided together for about 3 years. By any standards of the day she would have been of age for marriage, especially by the Indian reckoning. Also, her tribal customs would have been considered her married to John Smith even if John Smith did not officially reconcile that with his own church officials. Seeing that the Indians were considered heathens and not of worthy standings in the European Hierarchy, it would be reasonable that no record of marriage would exist.

3. It seems unrealistic that Capt. John Smith and Pocahantas could cohabitate for 3 yrs. without a relationship. There certainly would be no reason for her to have been intimately removed from him. It also is common for us to find marriages of persons in the ages of 14 -16, especially for the women of the times who often did not live past their thirities anyway.

4. Had Capt. John Smith sired a son the Church of England, nor the courts of England would have allowed the child to have been declared legitimate. Even in the case of John Hiatt and Mary Smith we found that John had been imprisoned and declared illegitimately married. His children would have been considered illegitimate and had no legal claim to the estates and titles otherwise granted. Larry says his understanding is that any illegitimate offspring were disinherited. In our case, that would have meant that John Smith and his descendants would have lost their lands and inheritances in England. Hence no record of the marriage or children.

5. Pocahontas came first to visit Capt. John Smith when she arrived in England. Did she simply come to see an old friend, or perhaps her old love as well as possibly their son? If they did have a child, would he have gone with his father back to be schooled in England or would he have stayed in America. By the way, there may have been a daughter, Mary, of the same union.

6. The name of Perequin Smith begins to show up a few times in records in this country which may give credence to the possibility of John Smith naming a son after his lifelong friend and childhood companion, Perequin Batton. Thus the name would have been handed down to preceding generations. A caution for official genealogical usage. We cannot claim this as being an established and proven line. This makes for interesting stories folklore, to be proven but not yet proven.
