By his son , Orson Bigelow

Hiram Bigelow was born the 20th of May, 1829 in Lawre nce County, Illinois. In his boyhood days his opportunity for education was rather meager, but he made use opf eve y chance he had to informhimself on the issues of the time . But most of his knowledge was gained in the school of ex perience. He learned the multiplication table by adding the essential number of figures while freighting with a team . In his boyhood days he was considered calm and sober beyond his years. His outstanding qualities were honesty, integrity and dependability. Being a second child and the first son in the family, he willingly shouldered part of the responsibility of providing for the household needs . In his work in the farm he was thouough and painstaking; he believed that what was worth doing at all was worth doing well.

He grew up with faith in God and devoted to his religion. While he was young, he witnessed much of the persecution heaped upon these Saints in Illinois. At one time when his father was sick in bed, a mob had ordered his father to be out of his home in three days or they would be thrown out and their house burned.

Hiram was sent at once to Nauvoo to get instructions from Pres. Brigham Young, where he was instructed to make out an affidavit with names of witnesses added, and send it at once to Carthage for military help, as Governor Ford had promised protect ionto the Mormon people.

When he presented his affidavits to the authorities, he was met with evasion and inuendo from the officers whose sworn duty was to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. How his young heart must have burned with indignation at this apparent neglect of duty .

With a feeling that there was no protection from mob violence, Hiram returned back to Nauvoo to report to President Young; however the wise counsel of President Young must have bourn fruit. For after Hiram had departed, it was evident they had considered the question of their responsibility, and there may have been among the officers some who did possess a sence of justice and honor. accordingly, They sent five men against the mob's intended violence which daunted them from carrying out their threat. After this event Hiram found employment as a fireman on a boat plying the Missouri River by which he earned means to assist his father's family on their journy to the great unknown West where they would be free from mob violence. Hiram bid farewell to his native state, leaving behind him all the scenes of his boyhood days. But with a brave heart and undaunted courage, he went forward, trusting in the Lord for the unfolding of future events. Soon after the family's arrival in the Valley, his father, Nahum Bigelow, passed away from the effects of poisoning given him by a pretended friend. The family settled in Provo.

Hiram was an able singer and became a member of the Provo choir. He also became a member of a theatrical troupe that traveled from town to town. He became interested in some of the daughters of Moses Mecham who it seemed to him were unusually charming and highly entertainint as well as beautiful. There was a younger one he wanted to meet, but like Cinderelle she stayed at home only when duty called. When he invited so me of these young ladies for a boat ride on the Provo Lake, He requested them to bring their younger sister along, as he had an ernest desire to see her face.

Girls wore bonnets those days, and when Hiram got a chance to see that face from under a little white bonnet, he described it as the face of an angel; the purity was sublime, with the most beautiful lustrous brown eyes he had ever seen. It was settled; he had found the one Parents: Nahum BIGELOW and Mary GIBBS.
