John de Segrave, 2nd baron, b. 1256, summoned to parliament from 26 August, 1296, to 6 May, 1 325. This nobleman, in the lifetime of his father having been taken prisoner in the wars of S cotland (9th Edward I) [1281], obtained from the king, in consideration of his services there , the grant of D100 towards the liquidation of his ransom. He was subsequently much engaged i n the Scottish wars, and in the 24th of the same reign, was constable of the English army i n that country. The next year he was by indenture retained to serve Roger le Bigod, Earl of N orfolk, with six knights, himself accounted, as well in time of peace as in war, for the ter m of his whole life, in England, Wales and Scotland; viz, in the time of peace with six horse s, so long as the earl should think fit, taking Bouche of Court for himself and his knights , and for his esquires, hay and oats; as also livery for six more horses and wages for six gr oom and their horses; likewise for himself two robes yearly, as well in time of peace as war , as for a banneret; and for his five knights, as for his other bachelors, viz., two yearly . Moreover, in time of war, he was bound to bring with him his five knights with twenty horse s, and in consideration thereof, to receive for himself and his company, with all those horse s, 40s. per day, but if he should bring no more than six horses, then 32s.; it being likewis e agreed that the horses should be valued to the end that a fair allowance might be made fo r any which should be lost in the service. For the performance of this covenant, he had a gra nt of the manor of Lodene, co. Norfolk.

In the 26th Edward I [1298], his lordship was again in Scotland and had a principal command a t the battle of Falkirk. In three years after, he obtained license to make a castle at his ma nor house of Bretteby, co. Derby, and he was next constituted governor of Berwick-upon-Tweed , as also warden of Scotland. Subsequently, we find him with King Edward at the celbrated sie ge of Caerlaverock. After the accession of Edward II [1307], he was again made warden of Scot land and within a short time attending the king into that usual theatre of war, was amongst t he worsted in the great defeat sustained by the English arms at Bannockburn, and was made pri soner by the Scots, who detained him for a year until he was exchanged for Thomas de Moram an d other prisoners of that realm who were incarcerated in London. His lordship eventually los t his life in Gascony whither he was sent by the king, who had conceived some displeasure aga inst him for the escape of Roger Mortimer out of the Tower of London, under pretence of defen ding those parts with Edmund, Earl of Kent, and others, where, being a great mortality, he d . anno 1325. Nicholas I de SEGRAVE 1st Lord was born in 1238 in <, Seagrave, Leicester, England>.195,196 He died before 12 November 1295 at the age of 57 in Prob. Eng. He was buried before 12 November 1295 in Chacombe, Northamptonshire, Eng. Nicholas de Segrave, who, in the 43rd Henry III [1259], attended that monarch into Frances, b ut soon after espoused the cause of the barons and became one of their most active leaders. I n the 47th of Henry's reign [1263], he was amongst those who appeared openly in arms and fort ified Northampton, for which proceeding his lands were seized by the crown. Upon the subseque nt fall of Northampton to the royalists, Nicholas de Segrave fled to London, where the citize ns having raised a large army for the barons made him their general. At the head of this forc e, he marched with Gilbert de Clare and Henry de Hastings to the siege of Rochester, and then ce to Lewes, at which place the celebrated battle, so disastrous to the king, commenced b y a charge made by Segrave and the head of the Londoners; in this, however, he was worsted b y Prince Edward who, flushed with success, pursued his advantage too far and thus mainly cont ributed to the defeat which the royal arms sustained. This issue of this battle is well known . The king, Prince Edward, and the chief of their adherents became prisoners to the rebels wh o followed up their triumph by immediately summoning a parliament in the king's name, to whic h Nicholas de Segrave was summoned as Baron Segrave, 24 December, 1264. But the tide soon ebb ing, he was among the defeated at Evesham where he was wounded and make prisoner. He was, how ever, admitted to the benefit of the Dictum of Kenilworth, and obtained a full pardon with re storation of his lands which had been seized. In four years afterwards, he attended Prince Ed ward to the Holy Land and when that prince ascended the throne, he appears to have enjoye d a large share of royal favour. In the 4th year of Edward's reign [1276], he was with the ki ng in a campaign against the Welsh and was subsequently employed in Scotland and Ireland, hav ing had a second summons to parliament 24 June, 1295. Nicholas II de SEGRAVE Sir Knight was born about 1258 in of Barton Seagrave, Northampton, Eng. He died on 25 November 1321 at the age of 63. Nicholas de Segrave, of Barton Segrave, co. Northampton, being in the king's service in Gasco ny, was summoned to parliament as a baron 24 June, 1295. His lordship was soon after in the w ars of Scotland and shared in the victory of Falkirk. In the 33rd Edward I [1306], Lord Segra ve, whom Matthew Paris calls "one of the most worthy knights in this realm," being accused o f treason by Sir John de Cromwell, Knt., challenged, in defence of his innocence, his accuse r to single combat according to the custom of the period, but the king not giving his consen t to the duel, his lordship crossed the realm. Having done so, however, unlicensed, he was ta ken into custody upon his return and immediately brought to trial. The affair puzzled the jud ges, who were at a loss to come to a decision; however, after three days' consultation, the y declared that his lordship deserved death and that all his goods should be confiscated, ye t added that, in regard he departed not from England in an affront to the king, but to aveng e his own quarrel, the king would do well to pardon him. Edward was much displeased at the bo ldness of the judges who seemed to set bounds to his prerogative, and gave them a severe repr imand, but he, nevertheless, pardoned Segrave and restored him to his possessions, several o f the nobility having interceded for him and entered into security for his future good conduc t.

In the 1st Edward II [1307-8], his lordship was constituted governor of the castle at Northam pton and marshal of England, and in four years after he obtained a license to make a castle o f his manor house at Barton Segrave. Upon the grant of the marshalship to Lord Segrave, muc h animosity arose between him and William le Mareschall, which was allayed, however, by the k ing's interference. His lordship d. in 1322, leaving an only dau. and heiress, Maud Segrave , who m. Edmund de Bohun, and in the representatives of this marriage (if any exist) the Baro ny of Segrave of Barton Segrave, is now vested. Stephen de SEGRAVE was born about 1262 in of Segrave, Leicestershire, Eng. Parents: Nicholas I de SEGRAVE 1st Lord and Maude de LUCY Baroness Segrave.

Stephen I de SEGRAVE Constable of The Tower was born about 1175 in Segrave, Leicestershire, Eng. He died on 9 November 1241 at the age of 66 in Barton, Lancastershire, Eng. He has Ancestral File Number 924J-NH. Stephen de Segrave, who, in the 5th King John [1204], was constable of the Tower of London, a nd, remaining faithful to that monarch in his conflicts with the barons, obtained a grant (17 th John) [1216] of the lands of Stephen de Gant, lying in the cos. Lincoln and Leicester, wit h the manor of Kintone, co. Warwick. In the 4th Henry III [1220], he was made governor of Sau bey Castle, Leicestershire, and the next year constituted sheriff of the cos. Essex and Hertf ord, and afterwards of Leicestershire. In the 8th of the same reign, he was governor of the c astle at Hertford, and in two years after, one of the justices itinerant in the cos. Nottingh am and Derby. About this period we find this successful person, whom Matthew Paris says, in h is young days "from a clerk was made a knight," acquiring large landed property by purchase . In the 13th Henry III [1229], he bought the manor of Cotes, in the co. Derby, from the daus . and heirs of Stephen de Beauchamp, and he afterwards purchase from Ranulph, Earl of Cheste r and Lincoln, all the lands which that nobleman possessed at Mount Sorrell, co. Leicester, w ithout the castle, as also two carucates and a half lying at Segrave which himself and his an cestors had previously held at the rent of 14s. per annum. In the 16th Henry III, he obtaine d a grant of the custody of the castle and county of Northampton, as also of the cos. Bedford , Buckingham, Warwick, and Leicester, for the term of his life, taking the whole profit of al l those shires for his support in that service, excepting the ancient farms which had usuall y been paid into the exchequer.

Having been of the king's council for several years, as also chief justice of the Common Plea s, he succeeded, in the 16th Henry III, Hubert de Burgh in the great office of justiciary o f England, being at the same time constituted governor of Dover, Canterbury, Rochester, &c. , and constable of the Tower of London. After this we find him, however, opposed by the bisho ps and barons and his manor house at Segrave burnt to the ground by the populace, as well a s another mansion in the co. Huntingdon. The king, too, in this perilous crisis, deserted hi m and cited him, along with Peter de Rupibus, bishop of Winchester, and others who had been i n power, to appear forthwith at court in order to answer any charge regarding the wasting o f the public treasure, which might be preferred against them. Some of those persons, consciou s of guilt, fled to sanctuary, and Stephen de Segrave sought an asylum in the abbey of Leices ter, where he openly declared that he was and had been a priest, and that he resolved to shav e his crown again to be a canon of that house. Nevertheless, upon second thoughts, he brave d the storm and appeared at court under the archbishop's protection, where the king called hi m a wicked traitor, and told him that it was under his advice that he had displaced Hubert d e Burgh from the office of justiciary and cast that eminent person into prison, nay, that ha d he gone the full length of his council, Hubert would have been hanged, and divers of the no bility banished. In twelve months subsequently, however, Stephen de Segrave made his peace b y paying 1000 marks to the king, and he afterwards grew again into such favour that, in the 2 1st Henry III [1237], he was the means of reconciling the king with some of his most hostil e barons. Subsequently he was made justice of Chester and the king's chief councillor, and "b eing now," says Dugdale, "advanced in years, deported himself by experience of former times w ith much more temper and moderation than heretofore."

This eminent person m. twice - 1st, Rohese, dau. of Thomas le Despencer, and 2ndly, Ida, sist er of Henry de Hastings, with whom he had in frank-marriage, the manor of Bruneswaver, co. Wa rwick. Of Stephen de Segrave, so distinguished in the reign of Henry III, Matthew Paris, thu s speaks -- "This Stephen, though come of no high parentage, was in his youth, of a clerk mad e a knight; and in his latter days, through his prudence and valour, so exalted that he had t he reputation of one of the chief men of the realm, managing the greatest affairs as he pleas ed. In doing whereof, he more minded his own profit than the common good, yet for some good d eeds and making a discreet testament, he d. with much honour." He departed this life in 1241 , and was s. by his son, Gilbert de Segrave.
