A Source of information: GENEALOGICAL SKETCH OF THE BIRD FAMILY, HAVING ITS ORIGIN IN HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT by Isaac Bird, Printed Hartofrd, Ct., 1855. This short sketch lists eight generations, with this Thomas Bird being the first generation. It appears that the Isaac Bird who wrotet his was in the 7th generation, b. 6-19-1793, m. Quoting from the above said Isaac Bird Book: "The name of a Thomas Birda ppears in different early records of Mass., and some have suggestedthat T homas B. of Scituate and of Dorchester, Mass., of 1642, might bethe sa me man with our ancestor of Hartford. But the Dorchester Birdsseem to h ave been of a separate origin. Of that family are many of theBirds in Bo ston and New York, and of the same was the Rev. Samuel Bird,a pastor of o ne of the New Haven churches just before the Revolution,and who, thou gh he did not graduate, was educated at Cambridge, in theclass of 1744, l eaving college a little before the Commencement, thatyear.

Our ancestor came to Hartford some ten years after its first settlement,a nd was proprietor only of a small homestead south of the city limits, and of a parcel of land of about 14 acres constituting, as the Records say, 'an island in the great river over against the Landing.' Being the non-professional that I am, I myself have not been able to link this Samuel Bird, husband of Eunice Wadsworth, as the son of Samuel Bird and Esther Woodford. Using the online LDS and rootsweb and the internet I have not been able to make the connection. There is plenty ofeviden ce that Eunice Wadsworth, dau of Nathaniel Wadsworth and DorothyBall m. S amuel Bird. Samuel Bird who m. Eunice Wadsworth was the son ofSamuel Bi rd & Ester Woodford (proven by Steven Bird research). My familydid not do cument how the Samuel, son of Samuel and Esther Woodford, waskno wn to be the Samuel, husband of Eunice Wadsworth. I know that Samuela nd Esther Woodford had a son Samuel. I know that Joseph Bird and MarySte ele had a son Samuel. Samuel husband of Esther and Joseph husband ofMa ry Steele were brothers, they had the same father and mother, so it ispos sible to go back to their parents and have prior generations correct.(D FH 28 Jan 2001)

Gen. sketch of the Bird family writt en in1855 says this Samuel Bird had 3 sons and 4 daughters; another fami lysource lists the children as: Eunice 1, Eunice 2, Eunice 3, Joseph, SAMUEL, Isaac Bird's 1855 book also lists Eunice Wadsworth's husband, Samuel Bird as a 4th generation ie.. Samuel of Joseph of Joseph of Thomas.Ot her sources however list Eunice Wadsworth's husband, Samuel Bird as a4 th generation ie.. Samuel of Samuel of Joseph of Thomas. I believe Isaac Bird's book to be incorrect here, it incorrectly identifies Samuel II's father as Joseph rather than Samuel I. Samuel I is not listed in Isaac Bird's book but Joseph in generation 2 is said to have had 5 sons ando nly one of these sons, Joseph is mentioned in generation 3. (Dave Herzog 25 Jan 1997)

Again some information conflicts between Jacqueline L. Herzog's 1995 family tree of the Martineau Birds and Isaac Bird's 1855 book, "A Gene. Sketch of the Bird Family having it origins in Hartford, Ct." as follows:

Isaac Bird's book lists this Samuel as a son of Samuel as a son of Joseph as a son of Thomas ie.. Thomas Bird Generation (0), Joseph BirdGenerat ion (1), Samuel Bird Generation (2), and this Samuel BirdGeneration (3 ). This Samuel Bird had a sister named Esther according toIsaac Bird. I saac Bird does not identify the mother of this SamuelBird. The importa nt thing is that no other information is provided onthe descendants of th is Samuel Bird in Isaac Bird's book. Mrs. Herzog'swork picks up with th is Samuel Bird and identifies the father as SamuelBird Generation (2) a nd Esther Woodford as the mother.

The Samuel Bird of Generation (3) apparantly gets confused with the Samuel Bird who is given as follows: Thomas Bird Generation (0), Joseph Bird Generation (1), Joseph Bird Generation (2) Samuel Bird Generation (3). The 2 Samuel Birds getting confused are of course 1st cousins, theMar tineau Birds' Samuel Bird being a son of Samuel and the other SamuelBi rd being a son of Joseph. Each Samuel's grandfather was Joseph Birdof ge neration (1) and each Samuel's great-grandfather was Thomas Bird ofgenera tion (0). At this time the confusion remains (DFH 1 Mar 1997)

This Samuel Bird said to have been born 10 Jun 1699 which would be 4-5mon ths after the death of his father which is of course possible.Samuel I a nd his wife, Esther Woodford, were said to have been m. Jan 2,1695/6 in F armington, Hartford, Ct. The marriage lasted about 3 yearsbefore Samu el I's death . Another possibility is that this Samuel II wasactually t he son of Joseph Bird and Mary Steele. (2 Nov 2002-note-perSteven Bird re search this has been disproved--Samuel II is indeed theson of Samuel I a nd Esther Woodford). They had a son Samuel also bornc1701. This Samu el II is said to have d. Jan 19, 1780 and he marriedEunice Wadsworth F eb 17, 1729/30. She was born 1706.

This Samuel Bird is said to have been born Aug 20, 1747. He is said toha ve m. Rhoda Hawley, she poss dau of Josiah Hawley & Hannah Warner.They h ad at least 4 children, Zenas, Ira Wadsworth, Samuel Osman, RodaAnn. Th is Samuel is said to have been a Loyalist and it is said that heremoved h is family to Canada in 1774.

John Birdseye came to Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT in 1636 from Reading, County Berkshire, England. He was a deacon. He then moved to Milford, New Haven Co., CT in 1639. John was one of the earliest settlers of Stratford, CT. He died at age 74. According to Rev. Samuel Peters, who married into the family, John came to New Haven with his two sons.
