On page 283 of Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri (1888), it says, "In 1806, Elijah, Ransom, and Overton Bettis, brothers, and their brothers-in-law, Ezekiel Rubottom, Elijah Mathews and ______ Alston, came from North Carolina. Elijah Betti
located where Mrs. White now lives, and Overton Bettis near the site of Wellsdale. Ransom Bettis, in 1811, married Polly Kelly, and lived where John F. Rhodes now does. Overton Bettis was a bachelor. All were men of considerable property, and ow
slaves. . . This settlement was far from any trading point, and did not grow very rapidly. Up to 1818 the territory now known as Wayne County formed St. Francois Township of Cape Girardeau County, and in 1809 it was reported to the county court th
no roads had yet been laid off within it." In December 1818 an act was passed for erecting the southwest part of the county of Cape Girardeau and the eastern part of the county of Lawrence. The new county was named Wayne, and because of its great
size, was sometimes called the "State of Wayne." The commissioners appointed to fix upon a site for the public buildings were Overton Bettis, James Logan, Solomon Bollinger, William Street, and Ezekiel Rubottom.

During his lifetime Ezekiel Rubottom served in the State Legislature, was a County Court Judge, and served as a Justice of the Peace. Like his brother Simon Rubottom, Ezekiel was a blacksmith and gunsmith by trade. It is likely that their father
Thomas Rubottom worked in this same occupation and taught his sons the trade. Ezekiel was a Mason, a lifelong Democrat, and had considerable influence in his community.

Laban RUBOTTOM was born on 12 June 1825 in In.⁴⁰⁸³ He died on 16 June 1870 at the age of 45 in Bloomingdale, Parke, IN.⁴⁰⁸⁴ He was buried on 17 June 1870 in Bloomingdale Cemetery, Parke County, IN.⁴⁰⁸⁵ Laban was a carpenter. Laban was a member of and married in Bloomfield Monthly Meeting in Parke County, Indiana. Laban was disowned by the Bloomfield Friends on 5-Nov-1851 for not attending, keeping a fiddle, and playing music. He rejoined 14 April 1870 shortly before hi

Levi RUBOTTOM was born on 2 October 1826 in White Lick, Morgan, Indiana.⁴⁰⁹² He died on 18 May 1909 at the age of 82 in New Providence, Hardin, Iowa.⁴⁰⁹³ He was a Farmer. Levi was buried in ,Hardin,Iowa. Levi was educated at the Pioneer School House of Indiana. In 1853, he left IN with his teams driving stock to go to Iowa. Levi and Louisa came from West Union MM, Morgan County, IN. His parents, his sister Jane, brothers Simon Dunn and Farlow an
Farlow's two daughers, Ruth and Catherine also went with them to Ackworth, Warren County, IA. In 1865, Levi moved his family to Hardin County, IA.

Obituary of Levi Rubottom: Levi Rubottom was born in White Lick, Morgan County, Ind., Oct. 2, 1826 and died at the home of his son, Charles, in Providence Twp., Iowa, May 18, 1909 aged 82 years 7 mo. and 16 days.

Her was one of the pioneers of this country, coming to this state on foot in 1850 and
returning to Indiana in the same year. In 1852 he married Louisa Amanda Thompson, a sister of J. D. Thomspon of Honey Creek community. Ten children were born to them, Viola, Rudolfo, Ludovic, Thompson, Alwilda, Charles, Ines Elva, Ulysses, Floren
Ann and Vinton, seven of whom are still living. In the year of 1857, they moved to Iowa and settled in Warren County, living there until 1866 when they moved to Hardin County and settled on a farm near Chester. February 15, 1880 his wife Louisa
passed away. March 1882 he was married to Jennie Hammer who still survives him. In 1886 they moved to Alliance, Nebraska, where he resided until 1904 when he returned to Iowa and has since made his home with his son. He was converted in early li
and has lived a consistent Christian life during all these years.

Funeral services, conducted by Reverend Doane of New Providence, assisted by Reverend Bowles of Honey Creek were held at the Honey Creek church Wednesday at 2:30 and interment was at Honey Creek Cemetery.

A large number of his old neighbors and friends attended the funeral service in evidence of the love and esteen they bore the deceased.

Rev. Doane spoke feelingly from the text, "Blessed are the dead, wh die in the Lord, henceforth. For they rest from their labors and their works do follow them." Six young men, all of whom were relativves acted as pall bearers and a granddaughter
sang a beautiful solo at the church and two granddaughters sand a duet at the home before leaving for the church.
