Harvey Ira "Bud" ROBERTS838 was born on 4 June 1902 in Eugene, Oregon. He served in the military on 12 May 1920 in Marines. Per Dan Roberts: Following Florence's death, Harvey married Mary Ray onAug, 19, 1927. (Mary Florence relates that according to Aunt May, Harveywas married 10 months before Mary Florence was born, and second marriagewas 10 months before Ruth was born. That would say that he married MaryRay in Sept. 1927. However, that wouldn't exactly fit the above dates foreither Mary Florence or Ruth.) Ruth, Bud and Bob are children of thesecond marriage. Harvey and Mary Ray were divorced in 1945, and she latermarried John Slivockoa.

Per Mary Florence letter to Barbara Roberts Feaster: Bud was in theMarines 5/12/20 to 5/4/22. No tour of duty for Dad during World War II.
Every time that I see Dad, I learn something new. This trip he happenedto mention that he studied mechanics in the Marines. He served his timeon "Mare" Island not far from San Francisco. I doubt that they have acamp there now. During this time, he caught the measles and had to go towhat I think they called the sick bay. When you recuperated, you wererequired to be nurse's aide. The head nurse liked his work so well, thatshe kept him longer than required. I think that during this time, hisgroup went somewhere else, so he missed the boat, you might say.
When Dad left his folks ranch in the early spring of 1917, he rode hispony to Prosser, slept under hay stacks, let his pony eat, was gone whenthe farmer got up. Ate apples that had been left on trees. He got a jobbuilding fences for several days, spent the summer working for US Case, afarmer in the Rattlesnake Hills. Apparently Grandad had several searchwarrants out for him, but Dad didn't know it. Before going to work forCase, he was in Prosser one day and saw Dee and Grandad on the street. They tried to talk him into going home with them, but he had a job, sorefused, but did let them take his pony.
He went to Mabton, got a job in a garage, worked for Henry Greer (afterworking for Case).
Dad and a friend went to San Francisco and Dad got a job working forBethlehem Steel. They went on strike, so he went to work at Feather RiverPloomis Company, slinging hash. He had to take care of two tables, 20 mento a table, and boy could they eat. This company was digging a holethrough the mountain for water.
I don't know why he quit them, but he went back to San Francisco.Perhaps, at this time he joined the Marines. When he was discharged, hewent home. At one time, he told me that he didn't write home all the timethat he was gone, but another time he said that he had to get permissionfrom his folks to join.
Between the time that he was discharged and when he married my mother,he started a garage next to his Uncles Bert's Tire and Battery Shop inGrandview. My mother's dad was a Section Foreman on the UP Railroad andthey lived in the Section house just across the tracks from Dad's garage.
9/20/23 Dad and my mother were married.
8/11/24 I was born in Prosser.
They had trouble with me before I was a year old at Lind, WA. because Ilaughed so much, it disturbed the others in the apartment house.
5/30/26 My mother died in Mabton, so Dad must have had his garage there,by then. I wasn't two years old yet, and can't remember her, but MaryEllen said that she could.
8/19/27 Dad married Mary Ray.
7/18/28 Ruth was born. I don't know when, but Dad had appendicitis thissummer and while he was recuperating, his garage burnt down. He workedsewing sacks, harvest, in the Pomeroy Country. Then we went to Pullman.Lived in a tent on the river for awhile. Dad went to work in a garage. Wemoved into a house. The rats were so thick, they could chew holes fasterthan the folks could plug them. Moved over on Main Street where Bud wasborn. I can think of seven houses that we lived in, in Pullman. Bud andBob were both born in Pullman.
I took my fourth and part of my fifth grades schooling in Moscow, Idaho.Early spring of '35, we moved to Troy, Idaho.
Summer of '35, Back to Pullman.
Spring of '41, the family moved to Astoria, Oregon. I stayed at Pullmanand worked for a farmer's wife, that I had worked for the summer before.Went to Astoria in September.
December of '41, war was declared and around Christmas time we moved toAuburn, Washington. Dad went to work at Boeings.
I was married in '44 and by then, Dad had a combination service stationand repair shop on Main and M in Auburn. I loaned his $300.00 to help himget started so it had to be after I was working.
I graduated in '42, spent some the summer helping Mom, she and the otherkids were working in the fields, worked for a family at Dupont, a smallplace just across the road from Fort Lewis. November and December, Iworked at Sears in Seattle, sorting incoming orders. Bet there were someunhappy customers because it took me a few days to realize while pile toput which type order in.
January of '43, I moved in with Mary Ellen and Lola Wandling, Seattle atLola's aunt and uncle's, went to work at Boeings. Mary Ellen was ariveter in Shop 303 and I strung control cables in the wings, Shop 304.Dad was working in the field, correcting any mistakes that they couldfind and making adjustments, etc. Think I quit around Decoration Day orsome time that summer and came over and helped Grandma through harvest. The winter of '43 and '44, I spent at home and Dad and I rode together toBoeings. Came to Mabton for Decoration Day and stayed to help Ned andGrandma. I had good intentions of joining the Waves on my twentiethbirthday. While looking after Ned's cows up here in the hills, so thatOrval Larsen could go down to the ranch during harvest, I met Chuck. Istayed with his younger brothers and sisters and cooked and kept thingsgoing for the Glovers while Chuck's mother went down to Riverside, Cal.His oldest brother was in the Air Force and he and his wife had lost ababy. On her way home, Chuck's mother met a lady in the bus depot in LosAngeles who turned out to be my real mother's mother. They were so busyvisiting that they missed their bus and had to spend the night in LosAngeles. I never did join the Waves. My aunt told me a few years ago thatyou didn't have to be twenty. Think that she went in at eighteen.
Dad and my stepmother, Mary Slivochka were divorced in '46 after Ruthwas married. He married Ann in '47. Don't know just when he sold out andwent to Orting, WA. He owned a whole block of business there. Servicestation, garage, food lockers, a butcher shop which he didn't keep toolong, just closed it. Their living quarters were in the back. They spenta lot of Sundays fishing, worked long hours during the week. Ann couldtake care of the station while Dad worked on cars. They sold out the fallof '65. I don't that that Ann lived a month after they retired. They wereliving on 272nd just north of Gladys and Harry Wells. When the Statecondemned his property to enlarge the freeway, Dad bought a house inAuburn, where he now lives. He worked for King County on the school busesand he worked for a hardware store repairing motors before he finallyquit working.
I should go over this with Dad and have him verify what I have writtenand correct me if and where I am wrong but now you know a little moreabout my Dad's life. I don't know just when he bought that servicestation in Auburn. Today, $300.00 is nothing, but back then it reallyhelped them. I used to put every other paycheck into savings bonds whenworking at Boeings. Wages weren't what they are today, but neither wereexpenses.

Handwritten letter from Mary Florence to Barbara: ....One of thehighlights of our life at Pullman was Dad was sent to the Studebakerfactory in Indiana. He got to go through the factory and took a course oncarberation. He drove a brand new car back, took him 33 hours. They gavehim $35.oo for gas, etc. Drove non stop US 10. Only stopped for gas and abit to eat. Had $4.00 left when he got home. He brought each of us kids agift. Ruth & I still have ours. Pictures (black) On mirrors. He mentionedwhen he was here how tired he was when he got home. There was a governoron the car set at 50 miles per hour. He could have taken it off after acertain number of miles, but didn't. A man at the college had ordered thecar.

Per Barbara Feaster's Memory book 1998: Bud Roberts ran away from home asa young man. He lied about his age in order to join the Marines andserved a tour of duty during World War I. When we returned, he owned andoperated an auto scoop in Mabton, Washington for years. He later moved toAuburn, Washington, where he owned similar businesses until hisretirement.
Notes compiled by Mary Florence of her Dad's memories: Charlie neverswore, but would always say, "Gosh Darn". Bert would say "ouch" if he gothurt. Dad can't remember his ever swearing.
What Dad remembers of his Uncle Charlie's family: Carl was a carpenter;Guy bought a relinquishment from Mr. Pell; Jay was a maverick (would liketo have been a rich guy but never had any money) and never got along withthe others. Jessie married an Irishman, whom Dad thought was a workingfool; he dug a cellar under the smokehouse for Grandad Lou for $50.00(when Dad was a small kid). A well was drilled in early 1917, and Dadremembers helping sharpen the drill bits. His Uncle Bert built the barnin 1916. At one time they had an orchard east of the house, but it frozeout one winter.
Dad's Uncle Bert had a homestead straight south of Grandad Lou's. in thecanyon down from the schoolhouse. Bert was a city dude--not a farmer. Hehad a dance hall on his homestead, and also had the first theater inSunnyside. Dad was quite impressed when Bert showed the kids aflashlight--he bought one when they first came out. He apologized to thekids; told them that he forgot the other one that made it dark! He alsoremembers that Bert bought one of the first right-hand Buicks to come out.
Dad says that Grandma Cora went sledding with him and Claire Cowgill. She used a scoop shovel for a sled. It is hard to feature her with allher underskirts sliding down a hill on a scoop shovel. Grandma alwayswore at least one underskirt (long)--two if she thought for one minutesthat there was any danger of anyone being able to see through. She alwayswore long sleeves and didn't approve of women in pants--let alone shorts!!
Grandad Lou bought his first car in 1913: it was a touring car, had ared dash, cloth top that rolled down and isinglass windows that were likecurtains that could be taken off. He had the first car "On the hill". Dadremembers driving it to the Pioneer Picnic in 1013; he was eleven yearsold. Grandad Lou couldn't go to the Picnic that year, and Grandma Coraasked him if he would drive the car, so they went in the car instead oftaking the wagon.
Dad left home in March 1917, the spring before he turned 15. When Dadgot out of the Marines, he got off the train at Mabton at midnight, andwalked to the ranch. When he reached Grandma Miller's, he phoned Cora andshe met him halfway across the field (May 1922).
Dad's first automobile was a 1908 4 cylinder Buick that had been madeinto a pickup with a box on the back. Parents: Louis Elwood ROBERTS and Cora Edna MILLER.
