Daniel ROBERSON was born about 1780 in Pa. He died in 1822 at the age of 42 in Meade Co., Ky. He was buried in Mt. Hope Church Cemetery in Battletown, Meade Co. KY. Although Daniel died in KY, his brothers George and Benjamin accompanie d his widow and children to Indiana.

Mt. Hope Church Cemetery in Battletown, KY

This Methodist church was erected in the 1950s. The cemetery has graves d ating back to early 1800s. As of 12/2005, 118 of the stones were readabl e and transcribed by Ron Yates and Lisa Hardin. About 40 graves were onl y marked with a field stone. Located in Meade County on Route 1047 jus t off of Route 228. It is in Big Bend, almost 17 miles on the left once y ou turn onto Route 228 from Route 448. This cemetery is important to tho se interested in Meade County, KY and Crawford County, IN history. The B ig Bend of the Ohio River was accessible by boat and travel was common be tween this area and Leavenworth, IN. Our oral family history reflects th at day trips from Leavenworth over to Big Bend for picnics and recreatio n was something to look forward to.

Those list members interested in Yates & Roberson families know that bot h of these families migrated in the early 1800's from Barren County, KY e ventually to Crawford County, IN. Two Roberson brothers married Barren C ounty, KY Yates sisters. Daniel and Esther Roberson paused or lived in M eade County at some point in this migration as their youngest child, Samu el was born in 1821 and Daniel died and was reported as being buried in t he Mt. Hope Cemetery. Daniel's widow, Esther and Benjamin & Sarah Robers on and children concluded their migration to Crawford County. The piece s are still being pieced together but it would appear that Daniel's famil y primarily resided in the English, IN area and Benjamin & Sarah Yates Ro berson resided in the Grantsburg, IN area. All corrections and any addit ions that can be offered to this understanding is highly desired.

Mt. Hope is a very pleasant cemetery to visit and has very old as well a s 2005 internments. The stories told by the headstones are classic and r eflect the hardships of life. One monument was erected by the friends o f someone murdered nearby. Clayton McMichen is also buried at Mt. Hope . Clayton McMichen became one of the most successful and respected fiddl ers to gain experience and exposure at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Con ventions, held in Atlanta from 1913 to 1935. McMichen was born on Januar y 26, 1900, at Allatoona, in Cobb County. He died in Battletown, Kentucky , on January 3, 1970.

Elizabeth ROBERSON was born in 1818. BORN UNWANTED
By: Origin Robinson III

In 1843 a 25 year old, an unmarried Indiana farm girl, named Elizabeth Ro berson, gave birth to a baby boy and named him Origin. Since his mother w as unmarried he took his mother's maiden name, Roberson. To be born to a n unmarried mother in 1843 was to be stigmatized; both the mother and th e child suffered the shame. Instead of joy at the birth of a baby boy the re was shame and sadness. The mother's entire family felt the disgrace. B efore long the little boy's sweetness and charm would win over his unhapp y relatives, uncles, aunts, cousins and grand parents.

To understand how this came about we found that Elizabeth had left the ho me of her parents, George and Frances Roberson before 1840 and was livin g with her cousin and her husband, Mildred and Abraham Froman who had si x small children and lived near her parents. In 1842 Mildred had her seve nth child and in 1843 Elizabeth gave birth to Origin. The situation indic ates that Abraham might have been Origin's father.
Apparently she continued to live with the Froman's after the birth of Ori gin. Abraham died in 1846 and in 1847 Elizabeth, who is now 29, married T homas Kinman, a 19 year old young man.

In 1950 Thomas and Elizabeth are living next door to Mildred Froman wit h Origin and two little girls, Ester 2 yrs. and Pernule 6 mos. Her parent s, George and Frances Roberson, and her younger sister Sarah lived in th e same area. Until Origin was twelve years old he knew his uncle and gran dfather and he were all Roberson's. How he thought and felt about his nam e being changed to Kinman we have no way of knowing. He doubtless was no t entirely happy about it since he took back the Roberson name when he jo ined the Army in 1862.

Some tragic event occurred that resulted in Elizabeth arranging for Origi n Kinman, twelve years old, to be indentured in 1855 as a servant to Temp le Woolsey, a wealthy farmer in Pike County. That same year Elizabeth mar ried a Thomas Brewster who lived in the same community as Temple Woolsey . One cannot help but wonder how Origin must have felt about his mother' s action or what family circumstances may have made it necessary for he r to make that decision. Obviously the farmer agreed to send him to schoo l and provide a fitting reward for him at age 18. His handwriting and spe lling on his application for the Army show remarkably good skills. Templ e Woolsey was a widower in 1860 with several children of his own. By th e time Origin joined the Army in 1862, Woolsey had married a second time . Apparently Woolsey gave Origin a horse and saddle and some money when h e became 18.

When he was 19 he went to Evansville and volunteered for the Army and bec ause he had his own horse and saddle he was placed in the Cavalry and pai d forty cents a day extra for having his own horse and equipment. On hi s enlistment application he gave his name as Origin Roberson, and gave hi s place of birth as Crawford, County Indiana.

After his years of military service, which ended with eleven months i n a Confederate Prison where he became very ill and almost died, he was d ischarged without medical treatment. He signed out of service as Origin R obinson, a name that the military often used according to his records. H e weighed only 80 pounds, had scurvy, diarrhea and the piles. He had no h ome to go to, his horse and saddle were gone, where would he go? He was s ick and alone in the world, no father, and his mother had bound him out a s a boy. His feeling of loneliness and rejection must have been at a hig h point at that time. The only two people in the world he could turn to w as his mother Elizabeth and his foster father, Temple Woolsey in the Lock hart Township of Pike County and that is where he went. Where he went an d with whom he lived we do not know but we do know from his own writing t hat he was unable to work from 1865 to 1870 and that he was under the car e of Dr. De Lar and Dr. Agee in the Lockhart Township during that time. O bviously someone cared enough for him to help him survive.

In that same township he met the Robert Bland family whose daughter, Deri nda, he married in 1871 in Pike County. From the seed of this small, sick ly man we have all sprung to life. The seed of every one of us he carrie d as he suffered in that horrible prison. I am convinced that we are al l indebted to Elizabeth, his mother, and Temple Woolsey for enabling hi m to survive.

Fielding Roberson was my great grandfather whom l don't believe I ever me t. He had eight boys and two girls. (I think). The boys were, my grandfat her James W., Alva, William, Ruben, Mann, Irvin, Charles, and George. On e of the girls was Bertha. The other name is unknown to me.
Fielding was in the Indiana Cavalry during the civil war. He had three ho rses shot from under him during the battles. He must have been in the thi ck of it. He was captured, I believe, at Vicksburg, He smuggled a spoon f rom one of the meals and he and two other prisoners dug under the priso n wall. The floor was dirt.

During the days they filled the hole back up and one of them would sit o n it so they never got caught. It took several days to dig out. The dar k night they finally made it they crawled out in pitch darkness. They ha d no directions and did not know which direction to go. The other two me n crawled back in the prison and filled the hole. Grandpa decided he woul d go for it.

He traveled by 'night and slept in barns and straw stacks by day. One mor ning he awoke in the same barn he'd slept in three nights before. He wa s tired and hungry and decided to give himself up. He went to the house a nd told them who he was. It so happened that they were Northern Sympathiz ers. They fed him a big meal and told him how to get back to his outfit , which he managed to do.

Fielding had so many boys that he would not do much. He delegated authori ty to Alva his oldest boy. Alvy could even spank them if he thought the y needed it. One day grandpa was behind the barn crying, Alva had whippe d him. When asked what was wrong He said "I hope none of us ever have t o die but if they do I hope it is big Ab (Alvas nickname).

One day Alva was hauling Manure from the barn. They said a "city girl" wa lked by and yelled Oh Alf what are you doing? "Being already mad he yelle d "hauling horse shit". You did not say things like that to ladies in tho se days. The girl hurried on her way.

Grandpa Jim Once said he wished his name was Shit because Jim was too eas y to say and they were giving him more than his share of the chores. The y would not call him so much if his name was that. (Roberson Family Stor ies August 2006-Remembered and written by: Jack Roger Roberson, b. 1931)
