Per Dan Roberts: NEWS ARTICLE FROM PAPER: date and name of paper notknown. "The people living in Wheatland section are pretty scattered andthe opportunity for celebrating over the matrimonial blyss of some newlymarried couple does not come to them very often, so when Dee Roberts andhis bride returned from Mabton they decided to avail themselves of thisopportunity and enjoy the night to their hearts content. Accordingly, thepeople from miles around gathered in to make up a grand Charivari party. They came prepared for a night of rejoicing bringing their lunch withthem. Arriving at their destination at a late hour, the young couplehaving already retired, they began their harmonious music with tin cansand guns and soon had the doors of hospitality thrown open, the partytook complete possession after the Charivari and after eating a heartylunch danced till nearly time for the morning sun to rise. All had asplendid time, and only wished that similar occasions might come morefrequently." Dee Roberts and Nettie Johnston's parents were neighbors in the areawhere they both had taken homesteads in eastern Klickitat County, WA. Deeand Nettie went to grade school together at the Lone Pine School, a oneroom schoolhouse, District #75, about 14 miles South of Mabton. Dee quitschool after the sixth grade, and Nettie went on through the eighthgrade. They had planned to get married for a time when they were bothquite young, and in 1911, when Nettie's parents were going to move toMabton, they decided that it was time to start their lives together. Theywere married at Mabton, WA. in the upstairs of a brick building whichhoused the bank on the lower floor and that still stands as of 1994 onthe main street of Mabton, they drove back up to the homestead area in abuggy, in very cold weather. They had rented a homestead known as theSmoker place, a few miles from Dee's parents, and they lived there fortwo years. At that time, they rented the Ryan place, southeast of Lou andCora's homestead, and filed on a 320 acre homestead in Dead Canyon, whichwas to be used for pasture. They built a small house there, and livedthere for two years. Their first child, Nellie, was born at Mabton, atNettie's mother's home while they lived on the homestead. They bought the homestead, rather than "proving up" on it by livingthere, and also bought the Ryan place, and moved back to it. Ethel, Joe,Dick and Mary were all born in Grandma Emidy's home in Mabton while theylived on the Ryan place. Also, while living there, they bought theirfirst car, a Model T Ford. Dee worked off the farm at various jobs afterthe farm work was done. He worked on threshing crews during the summer, drove many miles to play fiddle for dances, earning about $5.00 pernight, and would then return home for another day of work. He worked inthe potato fields in the Yakima Valley, dug wells by hand, worked as a"powder monkey" when the irrigation ditches in the Mabton area were beingbuilt, helped move a grave yard to make a right of way for the railroad, anything to earn some money to feed the family. They had hired a welldrilled on the Ryan place, and due to poor crops and low prices, theyfinally lost the place. Dee finished paying for the well after he movedaway. In the fall of 1925, they rented the George Ormiston place. The childrenhad already started school at the Lone Star School and the family stayedat the Ryan place until school was out the next spring. During that falland winter, Dee went to the Ormiston place alone to work. The familymoved there in the spring of 192. The children went to the PlainviewSchool near there, and Dee served as a school director for several years.Dan was born at Aunt May's house in Mabton while the family lived at theOrmiston place. In the fall of 1933, Dee bought the Frank Bromley place on Sandridge, andagain went there alone to "batch" and work until the family could bemoved, farming both the Ormiston place and the Bromley place. The familymoved to Sandridge in the fall of 1935. Dee had bought the 400 acre Bromley place for $2,600.00. He later boughtthe Byze place: 320 acres for $3,200.00 : the Rossier land: 320 acres for$3,000.00: the Gunning 160 acres for $900.00: the Covalt place from theBickleton bank , 160 acres for $1,500.00. In view of the times, it wasquestionable whether he could pay for them, but the economy and theweather improved and the land was paid for easily. As time had gone by, the oldest son, Joe, was working off the farm forneighbors. When World War II started, Dick enlisted in the Air Corp andbecame a mechanic, and did not get back home, even for a visit, until thewar was over. Dan planned to join the Navy as soon as he was 17. Thattime would come in June 1944, and Dee didn't want to run the ranch and doall the tractor work by himself, so he rented the ranch to Joe in Januaryof 1944 and moved to Arlington, Oregon, where he went to work for BradenTractor Company. He worked for that company as a mechanic until 1960, dosometimes very heavy work on Caterpillar tractors and other farmmachinery in the field, and in later years mostly in the shop. He was theShop Foreman for the last few years that he worked there. In 1960, theJohn Day Dam was being built on the Columbia River, and the backwater wasgoing to flood out the town of Arlington. Dee sold his house to thegovernment, to be moved or destroyed, and moved to Grandview, WA. toretire at the age of 68. He and Nettie lived in that house in Grandview for about 19 years. Duringthat time, Dee took up a long tine interest in rock work, and made agreat number of polished rock tables, belt buckles, brooches, andwhatever. He also worked at rebuilding the wooden horses from themerry-go-round at Cleveland, whittling out new legs and so on. Nettiekept occupied making patchwork quilts, crocheted tablecloths and allkinds of needlework. In early 1979, Nettie suffered a stroke, which left her paralyzed on theright side, and took her speech. The family had to put her in a nursinghome in Sunnyside, WA. About a year later, she had another stroke, whichparalyzed her left side. From that time on, it is unlikely that sherecognized anyone. She lived in that condition for another year, thenhad a third stroke that left her in a coma until she died about 10 dayslater, on April 17, 1981 at the age of 87. Dee and Nettie celebratedtheir 70 wedding anniversaries, the last two in the nursing home. Duringthe first year of her sickness, Dee lived alone in the house inGrandivew, but not eating right, and eventually moved to the nursing homealso. He had a room across the hall from Nettie and helped to take careof her. Nettie's oldest brother, Joe Johnston, was in the same room withDee. After Nettie's death in 1981, Dee continued to live in the nursinghome and died there March 30, 1982 at age 89. Dee and Nettie hadcelebrated 70 wedding anniversaries together, of which the last two werein the nursing home. While living in Arlington, Dee served on the fire department and thecity council. Notes of L. Dee Roberts (extracted from a special article in GrandviewHerald dated January 18, 1979): Spouse: Nettie (nmn) JOHNSTON. Nettie (nmn) JOHNSTON and Louis Dee ROBERTS were married on 18 January 1911 in Mabton, Washington. Children were: Nellie Alice ROBERTS, Ethel Marie ROBERTS, Joseph Allen ROBERTS, Richard Roy ROBERTS, Mary Ellen ROBERTS, Dan Edward ROBERTS. Louis Elwood ROBERTS810 was born on 17 November 1864 in Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin. He died Tuberculosis on 14 July 1932 in at home near Mabton, Washington. He was buried in Mabton, Washington. Per Dan Roberts: Lou and Cora lived for a while after they were marriedat Valley, Kansas, then moved to Kirwin, Kansas, where May and Edna wereborn. In 1891, they went by train to Eugene, Oregon. Louis was working asa commercial fisherman in Ilwaco, Wash. in 1892, and Dee was born there.Louis bought land in Eugene in 1893. He sold logs to the Boothe KellyLumber Company and sold and traded horses along with running some horsesin races. Cora bought land in the area also. Lou worked on the salmonfishing industry pulling nets out of the water with horses. A daughter,Bessie, was born while they lived in Eugene and daughter Edna died ofdiphtheria there. Bessie had the disease also, but survived it. Harvey was born in June 1902, and one month later on July 4, 1902, Louand Cora and the other Roberts families in the area started out with fourcovered wagons, all of their belongings and probably some loose stock, through timber country, and eventually arrived in Prineville, Oregon. Theentire party consisted of; Lou and Cora with May, Dee, Bessie and thebaby, Harvey; Martha Chapman Roberts, Lou's mother (Albert had diedearlier); Lou's sister, Blanch Cowgill and her son Claire, (it is notknown where Mr. Cowgill was, whether dead or divorced); Bert and LuluRoberts, with their daughter, Leta; Charley and Laura (Dolly) Roberts, with their children, Jay, Guy, Jessie & Carl. At one town a little boyran after the wagons yelling "look at the gypsies". Somewhere along theline some of the kids came down with the measles, and all the childrenwere cautioned to keep apart so they wouldn't catch them. They minded sowell that some of the men made a swing for them to play on as a reward, then found that all the kids wanted to swing so they had to set up another one for the contagious families. From Prineville, Oregon, they went on to Cleveland, Wash. crossing theColumbia River at The Dalles on a ferry. One account indicates that theycamped five miles West of Cleveland and another account places the camp1/2 miles South of Cleveland, but in any case they stayed there for atime while the men looked for a homestead location. On August 10, 1902,Louis & Charley filed on homesteads of 160 acres each in EasternKlickitat Co., fourteen miles south of Mabton, Wash. At first, Louthought he would have a horse ranch, but he found the country settling upso fast that he farmed the 160 acres and helped other settlers to locatehomesteads for $25.00 each until the surrounding area was settled. Where Lou & Cora had their homestead home, there was no water. They hadto go into the canyon West of the house and haul water up the hill forhouse use. They took the livestock into the canyon to water. They laterput a gasoline engine in the canyon and pumped water up to the house: andin 1922 or 1923 they drilled a well near the house. They lived on thishomestead for 30 years, and Barney, Elsie and Ned were born while theylived there. Cora's mother, Mary Lucy Ricketts, came to live with themfor a while before she died. She had a pension from the government, andBessie remembers that she got $9.00 every three months; that stuck inBessie's mind because when the check came the kids got a sack of candy.Lou later acquired 1000 acres more land, and raised horses and mules aswell as wheat. He had to hire help in harvest, and the men that workedfor him would tell prospective workers that they would not need to bringa bed roll, but be sure to bring a lantern! Some of the family loreindicates that Lou was a heavy drinker at times and had trouble gettingalong with some of the children. He died of tuberculosis in July 1932. Cora stayed on the ranch for many years, with the youngest son, Ned. Whenthey sold the farm in 1946, she moved to a house in Mabton, and livedthere for a few years. Later Ned and Elsie and Dee built a duplex inPatterson, near Ned and Doris, where Cora and Mrs. Powell, Doris'smother, lived for awhile. She stayed with Dee and Nettie in Arlington,Oregon for some time and died in a nursing home North of Mabton in 1954at the age of 82. Other notes per Dan Roberts: Other information indicates that Lou & Corawere married in Valley, Smith Co., Kansas. Could be that he lived inHardiler, but was married in Valley or, as indicated above, they lived inValley and were married there. Note also that the marriage license forCora and Louis gives her age as 18, but from the dates, she would havebeen 15. The following information is extracted from the Bessie Crawford Familynotes compiled by Mona Thomason in 1992: Grandpa Roberts was the landagent and the surveyor, so that people wanting to homestead would come tohim to have their property staked out. They apparently had strangersstaying with them quite often. Spouse: Cora Edna MILLER.
